JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES June 7, 1994 Regular 4k Executive Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on June 7, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present. The School Board, superintendent and approximately 23 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the May 16, 1994 regular session and the May 19, 1994 special session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS 921 through 1027 A motion was made by Rob Keck, seconded by Tom McCormick, to approve claims numbered 921 through 1,027. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE None. RECOGNITIONS Mr. Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, recognized John Glenn High School athletes who recently participated at the Indiana State Track Meet. Doug Hill competed in the high hurdles, Jason Fisher placed eighth in the 800 meter run and Bryan Verkier placed fourth in the shot put. Bryan will compete in the Midwest Meet of Champions at Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis. This was the most successful track season in John Glenn High School history. The track team is coached by Dennis RippyMr. Reese, principal at Urey Middle School, announced that Urey P.T.A. Citizenship winners for the months of April and May are: April, Rachel Lung, seventh grade, daughter of Nick and Bev Lung, North Liberty, and Roberta Reinhold, seventh grade, daughter of Doug and Sue Reinhold, Walkerton. May, Brian Hostetler, eighth grade, son of Jim and Deb Hostetler, Walkerton, and Chris Reeve, seventh grade, son of Roger and Beth Reeve, Walkerton. The academic teams from Urey Middle School competed in the regional Academic Superbowl at Bremen on Saturday, May 7 against nine other area schools in a variety of subjects that were releated to the theme "The Era Os Man And The Moon: 1957-1972”. The Urey teams placed first among the 10 schools in Social Studies, second in English, third in Mathematics and Interdisciplinary, and fourth in Science. In total points scored, Urey finised first out of the 10 schools at the meet. Team members include eighth graders Jason Hartsell, Ben Long, Shawn Alspaugh, Holly Gouker, Brandon Liggett and Mike Skorup. Seventh graders include Andy Schmeltz, Nick Matovich, Rhen Taylor, Frank Engel, Marcus Houser, Chris Reeve and Bill Meyer. The Academic Team is sponsored by Urey teachers Andy Stegemiller and Lisa Cox. Mr. Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementary School, announced the sixth grade special award winners are Chris Long, Stanley Mlekodaj Award; Annie Reeder and John Rudynski, Ameri(continued on Page 2)
PARK CLEAN-UP SET FOR JUNE 25 IN NORTH LIBERTY The North Liberty Park Board is organizing a clean-up of the park on Saturday, June 25, from 9:00 to 4:00. If you would like to donate flowers or donations would really be appreciated. Or just come and help clean our park up. Please bring your shovels and rakes. There will be sandwiches and drinks provided. If you have any questions, contact Marie Haskins 656-4042, Mike Daugherty 6563045 or Pam Stull 656-8919. “VNA” Sharing The Home Care Mission VNA Home Care Services, Inc., a not-for-profit medicare certified home care agency, will offer a seminar and blood pressure screening at the Walkerton Library on the 16th day of June from 1:30 to 2:30. Representatives from the Visiting Nurse Association will present an informative program regarding the choices in home care available to the community through Visiting Nurse Association. "VNA is more than home based medical care we are a part of the community” stated Judy Rooney-Davis, Community Relations Assistant. "We have been serving the LaPorte County residents since 1966.” VNA now employs over 250 professionals, an increase of 40% over last year. This number reflects nurses, occupational, speech, IV and physical therapists, counselors, home health aides and support staff. The program will include an overview of the home care services available with a question and answer session to follow. There is no entrance fee and refreshments will be available. Plan Kiddies Day Parade In Walkerton The annual Kiddies Day Parade will kick off the 4th of July activities on Thursday, Juen 30, in Walkerton this year. The parade will meet behind the Walkerton Elementary School and will move down Clark Street to Georgia to the United Methodist Church parking lot. Line-up is 6:00 p.m. and the parade will start at 6:30. The categories this year are: "Me And My Pet", "Favorite Character”, "Open Gass” and "Float Gass”. A cash prize will be awarded for first, second and third in each category. The John Glenn Marching Band will also participate in this parade. Plan now to come and enjoy the parade and judging. Better yet, plan to participate and have fun! Hoosier Healthwise Program Is Ready To Begin The Primary Care Case Management of the Indiana Hoosier Healthwise Program is ready to begin in eight counties throughout the state July 1, 1994. Hoosier Healthwise is a statewide Medicaid managed care program. Eligible Medicaid recipients for the program include Aide to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) families and children and pregnant women and children with family incomes at our just above the federal poverty level. The goals of the Hoosier Healthwise program are to: 1. Increase access to primary and preventive care; 2. Improve access to all necessary health care services; and 3. Encourage continuity and appropriateness of medical care. Indiana is encouraged by the success of similar Medicaid managed care programs n other states. The Hoosier Healthwise Primary Care Case Management component will become effective in Marion, St. Joseph, LaPorte, Tippecanoe, Warren, Fountain, Vigo and Gark counties on July 1, 1994. The PCCM component will be implemented in Lake, Elkhart, Allen, Madison, Delaware, Vandenburgh, and Floyd counties beginning July 1, 1995. The PCCM component will be implemented in the remaining 77 counties beginning July 1, 1996. Physicians who participate in the Primary Care Case Management component will be called Primary Medical Providers and will agree to provide or authorize most medical services for all Hoosier Healthwise recipients under their care. Eligible Hoosier Healthwise Medicaid recipients will seek medical services through their Primary Medical Provider. All Primary Medical Providers will maintain their normal scope of practice and assume no financial risk through participation in the Primary Care Case Management component. WALKERTON ALUMNI TO MEET JULY 9 A reminder to all Walkerton High School Alumni, the Banquet will be held on Saturday, July 9th this year at the Cheers Reception Hall at Kingsbury. APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR N. L. PARADE The North Liberty Firemen’s 4th of July Parade committee, again reminds everyone of the 1994 parade. This year's theme is "Nursery Rhymes”. Make a float pertaining to a certain nursery rhyme and enter it in the parade, but remember, any float is more than welcome. Porter County Band To Appear At Potato Creek The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Cultural Arts Program will host a performance of Porter County Band on Saturday, June 18, at Potato Creek State Park. The performance, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at the Peppermint Hill at 7:30 p.m. The Porter County Band play bluegrass, mountain and contemporary music. The original group was organized in 1983 as The Hasty Retreat Bluegrass Band and performed the festival circuit until they disbanded in the Fall of 1989. Today, four of the original members and a new duo of bass player and guitarist complete their ensemble: Ed Cosner, fiddle/guitar; Dan Hoehn, mandolin; Leßoy Harmon, banjo; Jason Littlefield, bass; Sam Stacin, guitar; and Mike Sandage, guitar. The bluegrass music is in the style of Jim & Jesse Mcßeynolds, but with a distinctive style of its own. The group welcomes audience participation, and everyone is encouraged to attend this enjoyable performance. Your are invited to bring the family to this entertaining presentation. Although the performance is free, the standard $2.00 per car ($5.00 for non-residents) will be charged at the gate. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested to ensure comfortable seating. Summer Reading Program At N. L. Library The 1994 Summer Reading Program at the North Liberty Library is "The Magic Os Reading”. Children pre-school thru Bth grade can participate. Prizes awarded after the first book is read and also when the child reaches his own reading goal. NORTH LIBERTY TOWN COUNCIL NEWS The May North Liberty Town Council meeting was held on May 11, 1994 due to a lack of a quorum on May 4, 1994. The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Thomas Daugherty, president. Other Council members present were Ronald Kinas, Richard Warner and Dennis Fisher. David Sheaks was absent. The press was represented by Pauline Laskowski. Twelve others present per list. Previous minutes were approved by a motion from Richard Warner second by Ronald Kinas with a unanimous aye. John Gouker gave a report on the Utilities: Cost of new flow meter for wastewater plant $3,507.50. Sludge will have to be hauled this month. Had been contacted by Gene Bailey in regards to sewer hook up to his property on West Market St. Checking what it would take for hook up. Estimate to repair meters at Water plant $5,706.32. After discussion, motion by Ronald Kinas, not exceed $7,000.00, to proceed meter repairs, second by Dennis Fisher with a unanimous aye. Water line on Reed St. had to be repaired on Mother's Day. 2" line is bad. Quote on new locate for Water Dept. $3,175.00. After discussion, motion by Richard Warner to purchase locator, second by Dennis Fisher with unanimous aye. Proposal to install water west to cemetery tabled due to lack of funds. Specifications for water and sewer work on Lafayette St. and also East Center to Potato Creek Estates. Reported that total grant amount of $27,280 would be received from the St. Joseph Co. Solid Waste Management. Brush chipper was less than the original quote, so we were allowed to purchase 2 recycling mowers, chain saw and string trimmer. Brush chipper to have 50 h.p. Perkins Diesel. After discussion on the Lafayette Street project, Ronald Kinas made the motion to have the Council president Thomas Daugherty sign applications for project approval to the Indiana Department of Environmeltal Management for the construction of a water main and sanitary building services on Lafayette St. and to have the GerkTreasurer adddvertise for receipt of bids on said project. Second by Dennis Fisher with a unanimous aye. After discussion of the East Center Street project, Richard Warner made the motion to authorize the Council president Thomas Daugherty to sign applications for project approval to the Indiana Dept, of Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Department of Natural Resources for construction of a water main and sanitary sewer extension to serve Potato Creek Estates and authorize the clerk-treasurer to advertise for bids, second by Ronald Kinas with a unaimous aye. 1 Town is searching for grants to help fund these projects.
