Pepples’ fourth grade class and Mrs. Heiser’s fifth grade class traveled to Troy, Ohio to visit their pen pals that they had been corresponding with all school year. The students arrived on Friday night and were introduced to their pen pals. Even though the weather did not cooperate, the children played many games and activities in the Kyle Elementary gym on Friday night and Saturday. The students were able to go on a bus tour of Troy which involved visiting the Overfield Tavern and Troy Museum. The children became very excit-
ed about the possibility of visiting their friends in September when they began their correspondence. This spurred the Walkerton students on to earn $1,200 in order to afford their visit to Troy, Ohio, where Mrs. Heiser once taught third and fifth grade. The trip was a complete success with many new friends and cherishable memories made. St. Joseph Co. Health Dept. KELLY WYANT IS NATIONAL AWARD WINNER The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Kelly Wyant has been named a United States National Award winner in Chemistry. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10% of all American high school students. Kelly, who attends Washington High School, was nominated for this National Award by Eileen Fitzpatrick, a science teacher at the school. Kelly will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. Kelly Wyant is the daughter of Dennis and Eileen Wyant, of North Liberty, and grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wyant, of North Liberty, and Frank and the late Amelda McGaw, of Colfax, Illinois. Kelly is in the top five of her class at Washington. She is a trumpet player in the Jazz and Concert Band and on the staff of the school newspaper. A man is rich in proportion to the things he can afford to let alone. —Henry David Thoreau
