Laura Bostwick To Perform With Spirit Os America Honor Band Tour r w jSWf W * I ' Laura Bostwick, daughter of Mrs. Alice Bostwick and the late William Bostwick of 129 Friendship Lane, Walkerton, has been accepted as a member of the 1994 Spirit of America National Honor Band Performing Tour of Europe. She will be representing the city of Walkerton as an emissary to the people of Europe, representing the best of American youth. Laura was chosen on the basis of maturity, performance, and the ability to represent a positive image of the young people of America. The Spirit of America National Honor Band will tour and perform in Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Holland and Belgium. They will also perform for the diplomatic community as well as for thousands of people in Geneva, Switzerland on the Fourth of July at a cele-

Laura will join other selected students from across the United States, rehearse for five days, then fly to Europe for sixteen days of touring and performing. Laura is the Drum Major of the John Glenn Falcon Pride directed by Mr. Dan Fortlander. She also participates in S.A.D.D. club, Art club, captain of the Pom Pon squad, section leader of the Show Choir, Jazz Band, Pep Band. Concert Band, Yearbook staff, Aerial (literary magazine) staff, newspaper staffs and tennis. Laura will be raising a major portion of her expenses herself. The Spirit of America National Honor Band is directed by George E. Naff, former conductor of the Duke University Wind Symphony and the East CArolina University marching, concert and jazz bands. Mr. and Mrs. Naff and the Spirit staff are now in their seventeenth year taking bands overseas. Welle, of 318 Lakeside, Walkerton, a doctoral student in health education, was among 136 Southern Illinois University at Carbondale students inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi in ceremonies held this spring. The society recognizes scholarship in all academic disciplines. Members are undergraduates, law students and master's and doctoral graduate stu-
dents. Initiates who are juniors must rank in the upper five percent of students in their respective colleges: senior initiates must rank in the upper ten percent in their colleges. Graduate and professional students must have completed at least 24 semester hours and have a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Big Bird, Barney And Books At N. L. Library The St. Joseph County Public Library and WNIT Television present "Big Bird, Barney and Books" for children ages 3-8 and an accompanying adult. They will share the excitement of PBS award-win-ning TV shows by watching video clips and then doing hands-on activities, playing games, and hearing storybooks all related to one theme. Segments highlighted will be from “Barney and Friends", along with other programs such as “Sesame Street", “Mister Rogers' Neighborhood”, “Reading Rainbow", and "Lamb Chop’s Play Along". The program will be offered at each branch of the St. Joseph County Public Library so patrons can choose one and then call or stop by the appropriate branch to register. All are free and open to the public. The program will last about one hour. The program will be at the North Liberty Branch on Monday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. Other branches and the dates and times are: LaSalle Branch, June 4, 10:00 a.m.; River Park Branch, June 18, 10:00 a.m.; Francis Branch, June 20, 6:30 p.m.; Main Library, June 27, 6:30 p.m.; Tutt Branch, July 9, 2:00 p.m.; Western Branch, July 16, 10:00 a.m.; and Lakeville Branch, July 18, 6:30 p.m. LIFEGUARD AND WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTION TRAINING OFFERED The American Red Cross of St. Joseph County, in cooperation with the University of Notre Dame and the South Bend Recreation Department, will be offering a Lifeguard Training Course. This course will provide the necessary minimum training for a person to quality to serve as a nonsurf lifeguard.

The complete course consists of a Skills Screening Test on Monday, June 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. After successful completion of skills, thue Lifeguard Training continues on Tuesday, June 14, through Friday, June 17, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first day of the class and need to bring some form of age identification. All classes will be held at the Rockne Memorial on the Notre Dame Campus. All classes must be attended to be certified. The fee for the Lifeguard Training Course is $23.00. Preregistration is required and can be made by calling the South Bend Recreation Department at 235-9328. An Intensive Water Safety Instructor (W. 5.1. course will also be offered through the St. Joseph County Chapter and the University of Notre Dame. This course is dedicated to develop the skills needed to instruct and plan courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety programs. The W.S.I. course begins with a Precourse Session on Friday, June 10, from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. It continues on Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. All classes will be held at the Rockne Memorial on the Notre Dame campus. All classes must be attended to be certified. participants must have an American Red Cross Instructor Candidate Training (1.C.T.) certificate issued in the last 12 months or a current Health and Safety Instructor Authorization. If you need to obtain this certification, an I.C.T. course will be held on Friday, June 10, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The fee for the W.S.I. Course is $50.00. The fee for the I.C.T. course is SIO.OO. ENGAGED Karen Whitaker, of Grapevine, Texas, daughter of Shirley Stolberg Whitaker and the late Delbert Whitaker, of Grapevine, is announcing her engagement to Craig Randolph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Randolph, of Castle Rock, Pennsylvania. Karen is a 1984 graduate of Grapevine, Texas High School and is employed by the City of Colleyville Municipal Court Clerk. The groom, a graduate of University of Washington, works for the City of Colleyville Parks and Recreation Department. A June 25 wedding will be held at the Mill Creek Nature Park, Colleyville, Texas. The couple will reside in Gravevine, Texas. Karen is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gail Whitaker, of Walkerton and Mrs. Hortense Shirley, of Grapevine, formerly of Walkerton. The first covered wagons made the trek from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains in 1830.
