JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES (Editor's note: This is a continuation of the May 2nd Board minutes carried over from last week’s issue of The Independent-News.) Ken Jones pointed out that our specifications for the project require that the contractor restore the property to like or better condition. As an example, of a homeowner has maintained grass or landscaping in the public right of way, the contractor will be required to restore the property to at least its former condition. Gene Reese made the motion to go with Wightman-Petrie’s recommendation, and run the sew extensions down the west side of Walkerton Trail. Seconded by Gordon Hartsell. Carried. Zehner said that it will be six to eight weeks before we will have the construction permit for the south phase. Jones said that if they do some concurrent work while we’re waiting for IDEM to approve the project, we should be able to start advertising by mid June and then be able to receive bids and award the contract by July 18th. If everything goes as planned, it should put the completion of the project at sometime in October. It was suggested that we get attorney Holmes advice on when a representative from H. J. Umbaugh should come in to further discuss the financing of the project. The Ambulance Service reported on several problems. 1. Jon Meyer told the Council that the radio in Unit 11 has never worked properly, and now has had a major failure. When this radio was manufactured it was a special radio, and was made from blueprints. Now, the manufacturer cannot find those blueprints to repair the radio. Meyer had three quotes for a new radio, and they were: Kenwood - 52.228.00 for a 32 Channel 110 Watt Kenwood radio; Emergency Radio Services 53,400.00 for a 128 Channel 110 Watt Motorola radio; and Shearer Communications - 53,150.00 for a 128 Channel 110 Watt Motorola radio. Someone who works on the mobile radios has told Meyer that the Kenwood radio has twice the failure rate of the Motorola radio. After some discussion, it was decided to use approximately $500.00 budgeted for printing and advertising, 51,500.00 budgeted for Hepatitus B shots, $500.00 budgeted for travel and some monies from equipment and ambulance payment to pay for the radio. Walt Heil made the motion to accept Shearer Communicaitons bid of $3,150.00. Seconded by Gordon Hartsell. Carried. 2. Don Stanley reported that there have been a lot of problems with the newest EMT class. Os the 10 who completed the course, one EMT has never run any hours and another has not run any time since January. There is also a problem with a driver who does not run any scheduled hours, and they have gotten several complaints on her also. President Rizek asked if they set up a review board and if they are following their by-laws concerning the hours run and the complaints on the driver. Stanley said that they have contacted them, they've talked to the numerous times and the next step is their recommendation to the Council to terminate these individuals from the (continued from Page 2)

POSTAL WORKER INJURED IN AN ACCIDENT On Wednesday afternoon, May 25, Shirley Klinedinst, rural carrier of the Walkerton Post Office, was involved in a serious accident while serving her patrons. Her substitute, Joanne Traub, went to the scene, picked up all mail, brought it back to the Post Office, resorted and delivered all the mail. Thanks to all the Walkerton employees for their dedication. We wish Shirley a speedy recovery also. Early Spanish explorers called the Pacific Ocean the South Sea, because it lay south of the Isthmus of Panama, a strop of land that links North and South America.

Even if it is not about a nursery rhyme, any float is more than welcome. For more information call John Dooms at 656-8343, Pam Craft at 656-4722, or Nancy Sheaks at 656-4475. Fourth of July Program Plans For Walkerton Yes, residents of Walkerton, there will be a 4th of July celebration. Contrary to all rumors, the Friends of the Fourth are planning what will probably be the biggest celebration ever. We have received permission from the Town of Walkerton and the John Glenn School Corporation to move the festivities to the high school. We are expecting a larger carnival, since we will have more area, as well as more spectacular fireworks. There will be more news in coming weeks, however, we are arranging for entertainment on July 4 by Walkerton’s own Mike Westhues, as well as the Amarillo Stars and Kickin' Dust Cloggers. The kiddie’s day parade will be the Thursday before the 4th. Tri Kappa is in charge of this parade, thankfully, and we will have more news about this later. We will be having our craft show on the 4th of July. All crafters and organizations are encourged to contact one of the committee members for information regarding cost and setup. If anyone should have any questions, please contact Jean Cole at 586-3609 or Sherry White at 5862965. We look forward to seeing everyone out on the 4th. NORTH LIBERTYGREEN TWP. Normandy . . . From Our Own Men’s Memories Here is a list of several veterans from the Walkerton area who participated, either directly or indirectly, in the June 6, 1944 D-Day Normandy Invasion. Included is also a short recap of where they were and what they were doing on that fateful day 50 years ago. STANLEY BETZ 81st Airborne Anti Aircraft Battalion Battery "E” of the 101st Airborne Division On June 6, 1944, the Batteries “D”, “E”, and “F” were assigned the mission to give protection on Utah Beach. Being a small unit Battery "E” was on special assignment on D-Day. Instead of going in airborne, they were assigned to guard the beach from air attack. So they went in by ship, 7th wave 20 minutes after “H” hour. They landed about 7:30 a.m. in water 3 to 10 feet deep, under intense enemy attack. At about 7:30 p.m. Stanley was wounded in his left arm. He laid in a ditch all night. In the morning he was taken to a ship off the beach. After three days he was back in England in the 62nd General Hospital with a very swollen arm. Doctors operated immediately to save his arm. It was 90 days before he got back to his outfit. In the campaign for Ardennes, in December 1944, the Battalion departed by truck to the vicinity of Bastogne, Belgium, where the AA Batteries moved in for a defense of this area. This was known as the “Battle of the Bulge”. The mission was to Bastogne because of its importance as a rail and highway center. Living conditions were very disagreeable due to snow, extreme cold weather, in addition to constant enemy attacks of all kinds, night and day. By the end of December the enemy had surrounded and completely cut off the Division's exits. Some supplies were dropped by plane. Meanwhile, the German commander sent a letter to the American Commander A. C. McAuliffe to surrender. The reply by McAuliffe was Nuts! The Battalion was in contact with the enemy until January 1945. Stanley received a E.A.M.E. Ribbon with five Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead, Presidential Citation, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. Submitted by Josephine Betz on behalf of Stanley Betz (deceased) “BUSTER” EARL L. LINDSLEY 3594 QM Truck Company Our outfit left the U.S. in May 1944 aboard the Cynthia, an English ship. We traveled with a convoy of ships to Liverpool, England. We drove 2'/i ton 6x6 trucks hauling combat troops from “D” camps in England to LCT’s. We also hauled ammunition, medical supplies and rations. A total of 40 trucks on D-Day hauled 1100 troops to LCT’s headed for the beaches of Normandy. We landed on Utah Beach in July 1944. Immediately our company trucks were dispatched with 359th Engineer hauling pipe for General George Patton's gas line. We hauled 400 tons per day from Cherbourg through St. Lo to Viers, France. We rushed 7,500 gallons of gas and 275 tons of Medical “B" (continued on Page 2)
