Plan Memorial Day Services For The Walkerton Area Woodlawn Cemetery dates back to the middle 1800 s when Joshua Cole reportedly donated land for a resting place for the deceased. Incomplete records show there are four War of 1812 veterans buried locally, those being: Henry Augustine. Samuel Burke, Joshua Cole and Samuel Tinley. Unconfirmed is Christian Fulmer, who at age 13. served in the War of 1812, then in the Mexican War and still later in the Civil War. Only Ervin E. Johnson is noted as having served in the Spanish-American War. To the deceased veterans of the War of 1812-Spanish American-Mexican-Civil War-World War 1Worid War 11-Vietnam and Persian Gulf, we saltue and honor you on this Memorial Day. You served your country with honor. On this and every Memorial Day, we pause in our busy lives, to remember the pride and pain and the sacrifice thousands have had to pay. Flags and flowers speak more than words. The small American flags placed at each veteran's grave is the symbol of the freedom they gave their lives to defend and preserve. The flowers are tokens of spring, purity and courage. It was their sacrifice that made the Nation great. Can you, the public, give one hour to remember on this Memorial Day? This day will be observed with services and parade on Monday, May 30. Assembly of those who wish to parade to Woodlawn Cemetery will be at 10:30 a.m. at Urey Middle School parking lot, proceeding to the War Memorial at 11:00 a.m. Participating will be Orville Easterday Post 189 Color Guard and Firing Squad, the American Legion Auxiliary Senior Color Guard, Junior Color Guard, the Sons of The American Legion Color Guard, Cub Scout Pack 293, Boy Scout Troop 293, along with their adult leaders. WALKERTON TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES May 2, 1994 The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on May 2, 1994 with the following members present: Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell. Cheryl Rizek, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Attorney Chris Walter and clerk-treasurer Judy Hiler were also present. The minutes were approved as read. MONTHLY REPORTS The Council reviewed the Police Report and the police accumulated time with chief Sobieralski. The monthly Fire Report was reviewed by the Council, along with their annual report on money they received in their "special account". The report showed that they had received a total of $1,150.00 from a truck accident and a truck fire. There was no expense report, and the clerk is to ask them to submit one for the next Council meeting. Jay Potts said that there is nothing new to report for the Park Department. Dave Behr gave the Council an update on several items. 1. There has not been any news from FMHA concerning our sewer grant application. Pioneer Southern has sent a written committment to pay $15,000.00 toward the project, and Behr intends to contact other businesses to see if they would be willing to make a donation toward the sewer extensions. 2. Behr sent a letter to Bruce Gafill concerning the condition of the property across from the Town Hall, but has not had any response. 3. He has been conducting a survey with the industries, in town, on employee communting and lUSB will compile the results. 4. The Redevelopment Commission will be meeting at 5:00 p.m. on May 16th. 5. After some discussion, Len Jaske made the motion to sign the consulting agreement with the Walkerton Industrial Fund, Inc. Seconded by Gordon Hartsell. Carried. Behr is to take the agreement to the Industrial Fund for their approval. President Rizek pointed out that changes to the agreement can be made, if the agreement does not meet with the full approval of the Industrial Fund. OLD BUSINESS: Attorney Holmes had reviewed the trash bid and the contract with Superior Waste, and ascertained that the bid that they had submitted is a solid price for two years. In a memo, Holmes said that we advertised in good faith and they bid in good faith and he believes that we are obligated to honor that by approving the contract as submitted. Holmes also said that Superior agreed that we could pay them at the old rate for the month's delay in implementing the new rates and passing them on to our customers. Jeff Zehner reported on the easements that have been signed for the south phase of the sewer extension project. There are three remaining easements that need signatures. A decision needs to be made about the routing of the lines for the south phase. Ken Jones of Wightman-Petrie said that at the beginning of the project they studied three alternatives for the routing which are: the east side of the road, west side of the road or (continued on Page 2)
