Business Women To Meet May 26 In Walkerton The Business & Professional Women will meet Thursday, May 26 at the Odd Fellows Lodge. Dinner will be at 7:00 p.m. The Woman of the Year and Honorary Woman of the Year will be honored. The officers for 1994-95 will be installed. The committee for the evening is Betty King, Myrlynn Bella, Edna Kerchaert, Leah Pickavet, Eleanor Ludwig, Marie Anderson, Verda Kam, Neoma Personette and Marty Malstaff. YOU AND YOUR PET Dear Dr. Wise: We are planning to take our little Heinz variety dog on vacation with us since we could not make other arrangements. Do you have any "travel tips?" We’ll be traveling by plane but staying within the U.S. Answer: Many people travel happily and easily with their pets. The travel and lodging industry are, for the most part, accustomed to dealing with pets and can help you with plans. IT is very important to contact the airline well in advance to find out its regulations and services. Arrangements will vary from airline to airline. Regulations for international flights are even more complicated since they include requirements for the destination country. Some airlines allow pets (usually one per seating class) to ride with owners if they are in a carrier that can fit under the seat. Pet shops and most airlines can provide cages for pets traveling in cargo areas. These cages should be large enough so the animal can stand, turn or lie down. They should have leakproof bottoms covered with absorbent material. Make sure the cage allows for cross ventilation and has knobs on the sides so other cargo cannot be crammed so close it cuts off the air flow. Be sure your dog and your cage are identified with your name, address and phone number. Also mark the cage "live animal" with arrows showing the upright position. Again, check your airline for rules governing health certificates and feeding. You may need a certificate from your veterinarian well in advance (as much as 30 days) of your flight saying that your dog is healthy. There also are regulations about feeding and watering animals. Occasionally airlines will put an embargo on animals if the cargo area or runway are two too cold or hot. Even without such rules, you want to be sure your pet will not get too hot (over 80 degrees) waiting on a runway or stuck in a cargo bay which has no temperature controls. It may help to travel during the cooler hours of the day. You will want to take food from home so the dog will not get sick from a change in diet. Also remember heartworm medicine because heartworms may be more prevalent in other parts of the country. Chuck your hotels for their arrangements for pets. If the dog will be in a kennel, it should have an intranasal vaccine for kennel cough as well as the usual vaccinations against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza and hepatitis. Finally, in some cases it may be desirable to tranquilize a pet before traveling. This is not a good idea for older pets and for pets who will be exposed to warm temperatures. If you have a question about your pet, write Dr. Wise, Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, 3802 Springfield Overlook, Indianapo lis, IN 46234.
