NORTH LIBERTY By Gladys Sheneman Mrs. Blanche Swihart, of Florida, is spending the week visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Doyle Pittman, of North Liberty. She would like to visit with her many friends while here. Just heard over the telephone that Gyde and Rose Creech, of Florida, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 30. Congratulations and best wishes from all you North Liberty friends. We love and miss you. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Balsley spent the weekend with Scott, Tanya, and son, Nathan Johnson in Galesburg, Michigan. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Balsley, of Lakeville, spent the day and helped Donnabelle celebrate her birthday and also Mother's Day. Just received word that Tony and Josephine Pasman, who live on Smilax Road, will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, May 12. Open house will be on Sunday, May 15 from 2:00 p.m. on. All their friends are invited. Congratulations and best wishes on such a long and happy married life together. I would like to pay tribute to Charles Richmond who came to North Liberty eighteen years ago and preached his first sermon at the Church of Christ on the first Sunday in May. The church has really grown with two new additions with the last one in October, 1986 when a new family center was Judy’s Beauty Salon 207 W. built, also a new sanctuary, class rooms, new kitchen and offices. Today our congregation runs around 300. God has richly blessed the church since he came to minister to us. He has married many couples, baptised many, had many funerals and is always out visiting the sick in the hospitals, nursing homes and in their homes. So as you begin your 18th year here at the Church of Christ, we say “thank you” for caring and sharing and for all you do in the community. On Tuesday the following residents were taken by van from Miller's Merry Manor to the theater at St. Mary's College in South Bend by Mary Jo Golubski, activity director and accompanied by Gladys Sheneman. We saw the movie "The King and I.” Those who went were Fred Spier, Alberta Lowry, Pauline Powers, Helen Winegar, Madeline Sorensen and Lillian Hance. The show was quite long and they were all hungry and ready to eat when they got back home. Mae McDaniel drove and took the following friends to the 12th annual quilt show on Wednesday at Sauders Farm and Craft Village, in Archbold, Ohio. They were Iva Pommert, Pearl Newcomb, Helen Loucks and Gladys Sheneman. The weather was beautiful and they really enjoyed seeing all the beautiful quilts along with a lot of wall hangings. They also toured the craft village and enjoyed a big ice cream cone before returning home. Mildred Goins, of Bremen, and Gladys Sheneman enjoyed tea and snacks with Ethel Rauen on Thursday. Stan and Mary Schlemmer spent last Thursday with Alice Brown, of Herscher, Illinois. Martin's Greenhouse is now open for business on State Road 23, next to Bob’s Country Store. Stop by and see all their beautiful flowers and plants. Teen time with Tim Stewart on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. is being a huge success with about 45 teenagers attending. The message by Dr. James Dobson is "Life on the Edge.” There is six
more weeks and Tim says the door is still open. Our congratulations and best wishes goes to John and Norma Kidder who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday afternoon at the North Liberty Community Building. They have lived near North Liberty for 38 years and are well known. Tom, Tish and Betty McCormick went to Vincennes University on Saturday, April 30 for Timothy McCormick’s graduation. He received an associates degree in conservation law enforcement and also received a gold Cord for his contribution to the university. Jennifer McCormick received the Psychology Award in the awards ceremony earlier in the day. Our sympathy goes to Gary and Madelyn Nelson in the loss of their brother-in-law Dick Bowman, of Middlebury on Sunday evening. Dich has been ill for some time with cancer. He was only 62 and had been a former Elkhart sheriff and was very active in community affairs. He will be greatly missed. It was moving day over the weekend for Phil Patrick on State Road 23 next to the fire station. On Saturday, he moved out and Steve and Kathy Snyder and son moved in on Sunday. We welcome them to our friendly town. On Friday the huge moving van arrived at the home of Henry and Joan Koenig and moved their

possessions to Ocala, Florida to be near their daughter, Heidi and husband, Frank. We are sure going to miss them but wish them well in Florida. Over the weekend, Dave and Ann Newhart and daughter moved into the house vacated by the Koenigs. So we welcome them to our neighborhood and hope they enjoy living in North Liberty. Stan and Mary Schlemmer and Kay and A.J. Schlemmer, of South Bend, attended a parade for Warren Twp. Little League on Saturday where Stan assisted in coaching for A.J.’s T-ball team and were both in the parade. The Silver Hawk mascot was also present. Please remember Evelyn Newcomer, Georgia Heim and Flora Hough who fell Sunday afternoon and was taken to the hospital where she will undergo surgery Monday afternoon for a broken leg. On Sunday, April 17, Jim and Audrey Reed, of Bremen, spent the day with his mother, Dorothy, attending church, then taking her out to eat at Holly's Landing, in South Bend. After returning home she found her house full of grandchildren (great and great-great), nieces, nephews and friends to help her celebrate her birthday and was she ever surprised. They came from Nappanee. Plymouth, Lakeville, Bremen, South Bend, Valparaiso, Walkerton and North Liberty. Sixty-eight greeted her during the afternoon and evening.
She received many beautiful cards and gifts. Refreshments were served. On Monday, April 18, Dorothy Reed received many calls to help her celebrate her birthday. Calls were from her son in St. James City, Florida, Dick and Lillian Reed, of Michigan, Connie C., of Tucson, Arizona, Nancy from Andover, Massachuettes, and from her sister, Marguerite, of Phoenix, Arizona thanking her for the dandelions she had sent her. Her son, Jim and Audrey, also arrived and had lunch with her and then planted a lovely rose she had received. Then in the evening along with the grandchildren, they had a cookout of delicious steaks out in Potato Creek State Park. What a birthday. I’m sure Dorothy will never forget this wonderful birthday and the rest of all you North Liberty friends want to wish you a belated happy birthdday too.
