J.G.S. CORP. TAKES PART IN ANTI-SMOKING PROGRAM Over 150 fifth graders in the John Glenn School Corporation are participating in the High School Heroes smoking education program created by the American Lung Association. The program encourages discussion of social pressures to smoke and ways to resist these pressures. Students from John Glenn High School are leading the program. All non-smokers, these student leaders joined the program because they wanted to teach younger students smoking refusal skills. They are presenting the program at North Liberty, Walkerton and St. Patrick’s Elementary School. The program includes “It's Your Choice”, an interactive video designed to serve as a catalyst for discussion of the various ways young people can resist peer pressure to smoke. With approximately 60 percent of smokers starting before the age of 13, the High School Heroes smoking education program is targeted to an age when students are beginning to make crucial decisions about tobacco and other substances. It reinforces existing positive attitudes about being smoke-free and increases knowledge of immediate effects of smoking. The local program is being coordinated by Dan Snider at John Glenn High School. Student leaders are Cathy Arce, Barry Houser, Alicia Lowry, Amy Paul, Steve Snell and Robert Van Arsdale. The American Lung Association of Northern Indiana, "The Christmas Seal People”, works through education and research for the prevention and control of lung diseases, especially those caused by smoking. Poppy Day as a memorial to American dead and a tribute to disabled servicepersons originated after the First World War. Soldiers returning from Europe in 1918 were familiary with the wild poppies which bloomed in the battlefields of France and Flanders. The American Legion Auxiliary says the first national Poppy Day in the United States was held in 1921. The poppy program beings each year in the summer or fall when disabled veterans start making the flowers in government hospitals and special convalescent workshops maintained by the American Legion Auxiliary. In the following months these men and women are given profitable employment shaping the red memorial flowers. Think spring — think poppy day — May 21, 1994.
