JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES (continued from Page 1) I. Information Session A. Mr. Randy Rompola, School Attorney with Baker & Daniels, explained the requirements, purpose and procedures for the 1028 Hearing. B. David McKee, superintendent, presented an overview of the project describing the items to be included in the renovation of the Urey Middle School and new program space to be included in the 37,608 square foot addition to Urey. It was pointed out that additional land would need to be purchased at the Urey site to accomo^ate the addition. The work at Urey will include new loose and fixed equipment including networking the entire building for voice, data and video. At John Glenn High School, the upgrade of the outdoor physical education and athletic facilities will include new lighting for the football field, eightlane all weather track, new home bleachers and repair of existing bleachers, public restrooms and concession stand, outdoor storage for physical education and athletic equipment, ADA access to physical education and athletic fields, equipment, tennis courts and press box for baseball field. will be 3,500 square feet in size and provide for School Board meeting room, conference room, offices for superintendent, business manager, receptionist, secretary, bookkeeper, restrooms, workroom and storage areas. Possible location sites for the new administration office will be at Urey Middle School, John Glenn High School, or Walkerton Elementary School. C. Mr. Reese, Urey Middle School principal, presented a list of educational facility needs for Urey Middle School noting the deficiencies listed below deal with either inadequate space or space that currently does not exist. Instructional Approach — "Team" approach to learing. Science Labs — Students need an area to do laboratory work and experiments. General Classroom Space — Currently Health, and some Language Arts classes are taught in portable classrooms. Cafeteria — Currently the gym is used as a cafeteria. Student Ginic (Nurses’s Area) — I has no toilet or sing. Media Center — This area needs to be enlarged for student use. Also, additional storage space for equipment and instructional supplies is needed. General Classrooms — Currently most areas are not meeting minimum state square footage guidelines. (Examples: Art, Home Economics, Science). Small Group Areas — Rooms needed for Speech and Hearing, Special Education testing, Chapter One program, Gifted and Talented, other small group meetings. Handicapped Accessibility — Physically handicapped students could only use one floor of our current building. There is no access to the top two floors. Locker Room — Currently inadequate. Physical Education and athletes need more locker rooms.

Administrative Area — Need a separate entrance for Guidance and enlargement of current area. Faculty Work Area — None currently exists. Student Bookstore — None currently exists. It now shares space with the nurse’s area and copy machine room. Expansion Os Curriculum — No space exists to expand the current curriculum offerings. Storage — Additional area needed in all areas of the building. D. Mike Clark, John Glenn High School athletic director, presented a list of improvements that would benefit the outdoor education and athletic facilities at John Glenn High School. Increase and Improve Student Physical Education Curriculum Opportunities Increase and improve student extracurricular opportunities Centralize outdoor athletic facilities Improve supervision of athletic events Provide a secure building after school Fewer students being transported Improved equipment reduces potential liability Increase spectator interest Increase gate receipts and concession revenue Host IHSAA tournament events Increase student, staff and community pride E. He pointed out that the core classroom areas for grades seven would be on the first floor and grade eight would be on the second floor of Urey School. On the lower level, the stage would be removed and new locker rooms would be built on the same level as the gym floor and health rooms, and resouce rooms would also be located on this level. A single floor addition would be added to the west side of Urey creating a public entrance off of Washington Street. The new addition would house a media center, administrative area, home economics and industrial technology labs, band room, general music room, art room, cafeteria and kitchen. An elevator would be installed to provide access to the first and second floors of existing building. G. The new administrative office is estimated to cost $350,000 which includes $50,000 for equipment.
