Area Boys In All-Star Basketball Game Thursday The Teachers Credit Union Hoosiers All-Star Basketball Games willbe held Thursday, March 24, at Brown Gym, 737 West Beale, in South Bend. This event for the area smaller school players is hosted by Indiana University South Bend. The women's game is set for 6:00 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7:45. The Teachers Credit Union Hoosier All-Star Game is a postseason opportunity for standout small school players to appear beyond the state play-offs. Several of these young people are planning on playing in college, and several others are capable of making the college squads if given the chance. The Teachers Credit Union and IUSB are proud to present these area high school stars one more opportunity to showcase their skills and, perhaps, move on to competition beyond the high school level. Only a select few are named each year to the state all-star team. Very often, it seems these opportunities are limited to larger schools located within the metropolitan media outlets. Occasionally there is a small school player whose scoring exploits will gain a certain amount of renown, but more often the player's team will need to win not only during the regular season, but darings sectionals, and then the regionals, before many college coaches will take notice. Bob Williams’ book, Hoosier Hysteria, credits Bobby Plump of Milan's miracle team of 1954 for saying, "Our winning the state championship sure changed a lot of lives in Milan, not just for the kids on the team either. It opened up college to Milan kids for the next eight to ten years.” Nine of the ten Milan players in 1954 went on to college and eight finished. The 1994 line-up of All-Stars may be the strongest yet. There is a lot of talent and speed available this year although size is in short supply among the seniors of 1994. Heading the West team will be three John Glenn seniors, Jayson Kincaid, Toby Gardner and Jason Groves. Also on the West squad are Brandon Crittendon and Josh Binkley, of Knox; Dan Bailey, Rochester; Matt Allyn. Culver; Jon Berger, LaVille; Derek Steinhiser, Marquette; Dave Vermillion, Ore-gon-Davis; Gint McCarty, West Cental; and John Wellman and Chad Lovejoy, LaCrosse. The East team will have Roger Prough, Northridge; Justin Davis, Tippecanoe Valley; Ryan Todd, Lakeland; Brad Hartman, NorthWood; Jon Everingham; Goshen; Corey Reed and Corky Hendricks, Bremen; Mike Vessely and Loyd Howard, North Judson; Mike Sniadecki, Marian; Eric Hostetler, Westview; and Matt Weaver and Jeff Shenk, Bethany Christian. The area representatives in the girls contest will be Mindy Shock, Oregon-Davis, and Stephanie Shidler and Leslie Annis, LaVille. NOTICE Jim’s Barber Shop, Koontz Lake, will be closed from April 1 to April 10. 2tm24 NOTICE Myrna’s Studio of Hair Design will close at 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 1 and will open at 8:00 a.m. Friday, April Bth. 3ta7
