Working Parents May Qualify For Tax Refund Filing an extra form with your income tax could bring you a federal refund of at least $1,440 or up to $2,364 if you are a working parent and meet other requirements. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration is alerting working parents of this opportunity. Regardless of income, a working parent is eligible for a child and dependent care credit of up to $1,440 if the worker has workrelated child care expenses for one or more children under age 13 who live with him or her. The taxpayer is eligible for an Earned Income Credit of up to $2,364 if he or she has 1993 family earnings under $23,050 and has one or more "qualifying” children. A qualifying child is a child under 19 on December 31, 1993, and under age 24 and a full-time student on that date who has lived at home more than six months. A foster child qualifies if he or she has lived with the filer for the whole year. With the April 15 tax deadline nearing, Governor Bayh has renewed his campaign to remind families who qualify for the money not to miss out. Even a parent who owes no taxes might be eligible for a refund. "Many families are unaware these credits are available just by filing the proper form," said Cheryl Sullivan, secretary of the Family and Social Services Administration. Her agency is spreading the word to thousands of working parents in Indiana that they may be eligible to lower their taxes or fatten their refund checks. The form to file for the Earned Income Credit is "Schedule EIC." For the Child and Dependent Care Credit, file form 2441 with tax form 1040 or Schedule 2 with tax form 1040A. This is the third year of the governor’s outreach program for working parents credits. Since 1989, the number of Indiana residents participating in EIC rose from 235,000 to 265,000. The increase in dollars coming in Indiana rose from $130,371,000 for the 1989 tax year to $243,050,156 in refunds and credits last year. The Family and Social Services Administration distributes information about the credits through various programs and social service agencies throughout the state. Free tax assistance is available by calling, toll free, 1-800-TAX--1040 or the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance clinic at 317-226-5477. RAPID WEIGHT LOSS CAN BE FUTILE!
