SERVICES NEWS WALKERTON (delayed from last week) Monday Harold and Hazel Schweder took charge of the books and the program. Hazel told about this Indian reservation that sent one of their young men to college to be an “electrical engineer". He came back home and his first job was to wire the electricity to the outhouse. He was the first Indian to wire a head for a reservation. Tuesday Dorothy Taylor entertained us. She dressed up like a “genuine old fashioned hillbilly”. She also told us jokes and sang a song. Everyone enjoys Dorothy. Wednesday Jessie Schaeffer had the program telling us some “library humor". Thursday Mr. Gwin told us about state and federal parks. If you plan a vacation this summer you better get your reservations because some inns are already full for the season. In 1916 Gov. Ralston appointed a State Park Commission and they purchased land to start McCormick’s Creek and Turkey Run for the first parks. Now we have 21, six with inns. They are Gifty Falls, McCormick's Creek, Turkey Run, Pokagan, Brown County and Springmill. You can not get a Saturday night reservation, you have to get two nights. Along with the state parks, the Commission also overseas nine reservoirs, 16 fish and wildlife areas, IS state forests, 15 museums and 15 campgrounds. The campgrounds run in size from 20 people to 270. Some of the parks have more than 10 camps. The smallest is Camp Outpost, two people. The camp is inside McCormick Creek Park. The largest camp is Camp Shakamak with 270 people. We have 197 conservation officers. We have 360 national parks and some of them are in trouble because of too many tourists and the trash they leave.
