JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES (continued from Page 1) will be participating in the upcoming North Liberty Elementary School Science Fair. Mrs. Kendall Hoover, chairman, assistants Joe Hunt and Darlene Bell, and judges Joe Long, Teresa Russell, Mary Kay Millar, Mike Weiss and Michele Weiss, and Sue Groves were thanked in advance for their help. North Liberty Elementary School for the sixth consecutive year has been accredited without warning by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The North Liberty P.T.A. has donated S2OO to North Liberty Elementary School for Spell Bowl T-shirts and S3OO for various special supplies and needs for first year teachers. The Falcon 500 Gub donated $406.08 to the school for the purchase of special materials for the primary special education program. A North Liberty Elemetnary Talent Show is being planned for 1:00 p.m. on April 13 (grades 1-3) and April 15 (grades 4-6). Mr. Reese, principal at Urey Middle School, announced P.T.A. Reflection winners: Visual Arts — Alison Smith, Lexia Drews, Mary Pflugshaupt; Literature — Jonathan Rundle, Tom Stafford, Denise Martin. These projects will be displayed at the State P.T.A. Convention later this year. Winners in the Urey Middle School Science Fair are Eric Gaywell, Brian Snell, Michelle Annis, Lisa Bloomer, Marcus Houser and Brandon Liggett. These students, along with approximately 50 other Science Fair students, will attend a trip to Chicago's Science and Industry Museum. The Urey Chess teams participated at the Michigan Gty Regional Tournament and three teams qualified for the State Contest to be held in Terre Haute in April. Students competing in the State Contest will be Brandon Liggett, Jake Pletcher, Eric Gaywell, Paul Palicki, Shawn Alspaugh, Josh Laßosky, Ben Long, Blake Klinedinst, Kevin Bullock, Casey Butler, Matt Gineris, Jamie Dolph and Tom Stafford. Mr. Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, recognized the John Glenn High School Academic Decathlon Team and Brace Fleming, coach, for placing eighth out of 12 teams (schools with 1,000 or less enrollment) at the State competition. Accept a Donation From McDonald's of LaPaz to the John Glenn High School Scholarship Fund Gene Knowlton made a motion, seconded by Shirley Anderson, to accept the donation of an Apple II GS computer valued at S7OO to Waikerton Elementary School, P.T.A donations to North Liberty Elementary School of S2OO for Spell Bowl T-shirts, S3OO for miscellaneous teacher supplies, $406.08 from the Falcon 500 Gub for primary special education materials, and $254 from McDonald’s at LaPaz to the John Glenn High School Scholarship Fund. The motion was approved be a six to zero vote. OLD BUSINESS 1. Approve Job Sharing Policy Following the second review of the job sharing policy, Tom McCormick made a motion, seconded by Gene Knwolton, to approve the Job Sharing School Board Policy. The policy will be of a benefit to the teachers and the Corporation as teachers will be allowed to pursue their career as well as responsibilities at home. The policy will allow two teachers to share one position upon approval of the principal, superintendent and School Board. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 2. Approve Revised Driver Education, Business Education and Agricultural Curriculums Following a breif review of the curriculums by Leon Verhaeghe, Agriculture teacher; Nancy Hindman, Business Education teacher; and Gerry Brown, Driver Education teacher, and questions by Board members, Gene Knowlton made a motion, seconded by Shirley Anderson to approve the revised curriculums. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. NEW BUSINESS 1. Appointments a. Approve the Appoitment of John Hostrawser as Assistant Baseball Coach b. Approve the Appointment of Scott Richie as Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach c. Approve the Appointment of Pam Pearish as 7th and Bth Grade Track Coach d. Approve the Appointment of Shirley Ross to Serve on the Area Library Service Authority Region 2 Tom McCormick made a motion, seconded by Rob Keck, to approve the appointments as listed. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 2. Approve the Purchase of a New School Bus to Replace a Contracted Route Bus for 1994-95 A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Gene Knowlton, to purchase a 1994 In-
ternational/Thomas 66-passenger school bus for $41,311 from Kerlin Bus Sales & Leasing. The bus is equal in specifications and price as the one purchased in January, 1994 based on November 23. 1993 bids. Following questions and discussions by Board members on the need for four spare buses and whether or not the school corporation should reconsider the practice of school owned and employee driven school buses versus contracted buses, the motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 3. Approve the 1994-95 Greene Township Tuition Applications from the South Bend Community School Corporation A motion was made by Shirley Anderson, seconded by Tom McCormick. to approve the 1994-95 Greene Township Tuition applications from the South Bend Community School Corporation. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 4. Approve the Employment of Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. to Provide Architectural Services for Summer Maintenance Improvements Projects Mr. McKee recommended to the School Board the Fanning/Howey Associates proposal for architectural services for the 1994 summer work at John Glenn High School for air conditioning of five classrooms; replacement of ventilation duct work, lights and celling tile; and the addition of a storage room at Walkerton Hementary School. Architectural services will be on an hourly basis in accordance with the billing rates included in the proposal not to exceed $22,000. Tom McCormick made a motion, seconded by Dan Patrick, to approve the employment of Fanning/Howey Architects for the summer maintenance and improvement projects as proposed. The motion was approved by a four to two vote with Shirley Anderson and Rob Keck voting no. 5. Approve the 1993-94 Driver Education Program A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Gene Knowlton, to approve the 1994 summer Driver Education fee of $152. This fee represents an increase of $7 over last year and is needed to offset the additional cost of the program. The student fees do not fully support the cost of the Driver Education Program. Following discussions on the recommendation, Mr. Patrick moved to amend the motion by increasing the fee to $(75, so the program would be self-supporting. The amendment to the motion died for lack of a second. The motion was then approved by a five to one vote with Mr. Keck voting no. 6. Approve Continuation of Contract for School Age Child Care Funds A motion was made by Dan Patrick, seconded by Shirley Andereson, to approve the continuation of a contract for school age child care funds for $2,572 through the St. Joseph County Step Ahead Council and the State of Indiana. The grant will be used to support the school age child care program housed at North Liberty Elementary School. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. REPORTS 1. Superintendent’s Reports a. Request for Use of John Glenn High School Baseball Diamond for a Walkerton Area 30 and Over Baseball Team The Board was informed that a Walkerton Area 30 and Over Baseball Team has requested used of the John Glenn High School baseball field for the summer. Following certification of insurance, the group will receive approval to use the baseball field. c. Progress Report on the Study of Urey Middle School as an Option for Meeting Middle School Facility Needs The superintendent advised the Board that a proposal on the use of Urey Middle School as on option for meeting middle school facility needs will be presented to the School Board at the next Board meeting on March 15, 1994. Appreciation was expressed to th Walkerton Elementary P.T.A. for providing refreshments for the School Board meeting. Darlene Flora, Business Manager/Treasurer for the School Corporation, reported to the Board that State Board of Accounts have been auditing the school financial records for the period of time from July 1991 through June 1993. This is a normal audit that takes place very two years and should be completed within the next ten days. The superintendent reported to the School Board that new stage curtains for the North Liberty Elementary stage are being ordered at a cost of $2,030. This work is being done in conjunction with new curtains ordered for John Glenn High School. The superintendent called to the attention of the Board the conferences that have been approved for teachers and a list of written conference reports. These reports are on file in the school corporation office.
