JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES February 22, 1994 Executive Session All School Board members, along with the superintendent, met in executive session at 6:30 p.m. on February 22, 1994 in South Bend for the purpose of conducting an inservice training session. Richard Hill, Paul Peralta and Randy Rompola, attorneys with the school law firm of Baker & Daniels, made presentations to the School Board. The meeting concluded at 9:30 p.m. March 8, 1994 Regular Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on March 8, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the Walkerton Elementary School. All members were present except Janice Ryan. The School Board, superintendent and approximately 14 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the February 1, 1994 regular session and February 22, 1994 executive session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS — 162 THROUGH 380 A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Rob Keck, to approve claims numbered 162 through 380. Following questions by Board members, the claims were approved by a six to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE None RECOGNITIONS 1. Walkerton Elementary Staff — Technology Demonstration Mrs. HMelanie Heiser’s fifth grade students, Brandy Wolf and Becky Whitmer, demonstrated for the School Board reports on presidents that were produced through a variety of technology resources. The reports were written on a word processor and then the students demonstrated how pictures of the presidents were scanned in into the computer and placed into the report. The students then printed the report including the picture with a color ink jet printer. Mrs. Lightfoot, principal at Walkerton Elementary School, announced Science Fair winners: Rosettes —• Shawn Kickbush, Neal Dodge, Jennifer Palmer, Stefanie Gakle, Tony Shephard, Philip Strahm, Jason Kruyer; trophy winners advancing to Notre Dame Regional — Lisa Kuzmicz, Katie Hostetler, Lauren Heemer, Jessica Houston. Mrs. Lightfoot expressed appreciation to Mrs. Lisa Cox, Mr. Andy Stegemiller, Dr. Joseph Kopp and Mr. Joe Long who served as judges for the Science Fair. An Apple II GS computer valued at S7OO has been donated to Walkerton Elementary School. John Huffman and Doug Smith. Sixth Grade Girls basketball coaches, were cited by LaVille parents for their sportsmanship and "being a great example to all players and coaches." Walkerton Elementary School was complimented for making good sportsmanship a priority. Mr. Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementary School, reported that approximately 120 students (continued on Page 12)

The North Liberty Chapter of Tri Kappa celebrated their 25th anniversary with a dinner before their meeting on Tuesday, March 8 at the North Liberty Community Building. The chapter was formed on March 26,1969. Four charter members were honored and shared with the members some of the past history. Those honored were Joanne Carter, Ruth Ann Rizek, Karen Dregits and Joyce Knepp. Several past members were also present to share in the celebration. A dinner catered from Bob's Country Store and an anniversary cake made by member Irinda Slater was enjoyed. A toast was made by president Sandy Clingenpeel, thanking the charter members for starting a Tri Kappa chapter in the community. In March we celebrate Fine Arts and the chapter was entertained by an excellent performance from the clarinet ensemble. Members of the Ensemble, from the John Glenn Band, were Amy Arnett, Laura Bostwick, Becca VanWechei, Beth Arnett and Tracy Limerick. The meeting was called to order at 8:30 by the president. After the opening song and verse, roll call was taken followed by reading of the minutes and treasurer's report. The corresponding secretary, Marks Jackson, read several cards from State officers, congratulating the chapter on their 25 years of service to the community and state. Karen Warner reported that we will serve at the birthday party for Miller’s Merry Manor residents on Sunday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m. Irinda Slater gave us information on the Fine Arts Festival at John Glenn on Sunday, April 17. Sign up sheets were sent around to help set up, work, and take down for the project. The Variety Show and Sandwich Salad Bar was discussed with each chairperson reporting. Tuesday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. is the date and time for this fundraiser. Most of the proceeds from this project will go for our scholarships, given to graduating seniors. Sandy thanked the co-hostesses, Connie Rupel, Irinda Slater and WUlidene Malstaff and the officers for all the hard work they did in preparing for the chapter’s 25th anniversary. The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. This will be inspection and all members were asked to be present. We will also have a charity program. The meeting ended at 9:37 with the dosing verse.
Present Winter Sports Awards At John Glenn The John Glenn Winter Sports Awards were presented in a program at the high school last Thursday evening. The students so honored were: Wrestling Mike Daube, Coach Most valuable wrestler — Gayton Marks. Most improved wrestler — Chad Ladyga. Peregrine Falcon award — Dan Schmeltz. Mental attitude award — Mike Walter. Gfrb Basketball Scott Hostetler, Coach Most valuable player — Renee Fisher. Most rebounds — Tracey Legge. Most improved player — Jennifer Hoover. Best free throw percentage — DaraCisney. Most assists — Renee Fisher. Mental attitude — Crystal Brooke. Boys Basketball Gordon Mosson, Coach Most valuable players — Jayson Kincaid and Toby Gardner. Most improved — Steve Snell. Most assists — Toby Gardner. Most rebounds — Jayson Kincaid. Best free throw percentage — Jayson Kincaid. Mental attitude — Jason Groves and Ryan Walls. WALKERTON LITTLE LEAGUE REGISTRATION Sign-up for the Walkerton Little League T-Ball and baseball will be held at the Walkerton Youth Building Saturday, March 12 and Saturday, March 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information call Rick Coffman at 586-7285 or Curt Pletcher at 784-8724. There will be a coaches meeting Sunday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m. REGISTRATION FOR NORTH LIBERTY YOUTH LEAGUE NEEDED Registration must be received by March 25 for the North Liberty Youth League's summer baseball and softball seasons. The North Liberty Youth League’s monthly meeting has been cancelled. The March meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 28th at the V.F.W.
Tri Kappas Set Date For Annual Arts & Craft Show The Epsilon Chi and Zeta Pi Chapters of Tri Kappa are pleased to announce that their annual Arts and Crafts Show will be Sunday, April 17th from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the John Glenn High School Commons. The show will feature as guest artists, employees of the John Glenn School Corporation and St. Patrick’s Elementary School. Musical entertainment will be provided by various soloists and ensembles from Urey Middle School and John Glenn High School as well as the John Glenn Jazz Band and Rhythm Express Show Choir. Participation is open to all students in pre-kindergarten through high school and adults in the John Glenn and St. Patrick’s systems. Rules for this year's show are as follows: Contest Rules 1. Entries should be brought to the John Glenn High School cafeteria on Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 a.m. 2. The public viewing of art and crafts will be in the John Glenn High School cafeteria on Sunday, April 17, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. E.S.T. 3. Students in Pre-Kindergar-ten through Grade 12 and any adults within the John Glenn School Corporation boundaries may participate. 4. Contestants are limited to two entried per category. 5. Divisions are art, craft and photography for Kindergarten through Grade 6 and Adults. Art, craft, photography and computer graphics are the divisions for middie school. High school divisions are basic art, drawing, commercial design, photography, painting, basic art sculpture and sculpture. All woodworking projects will be classified as a craft. 6. Each entry should have a contestant’s name, school, grade and media on the entry blank. Media is the material used in the art; for example, water color, oil, crayon, ink, pencil, charcoal, etc. Labels may be obtained from the school art teachers or the local newspaper. Entry blanks will also be available on Saturday, April 16th at the John Glenn High School cafeteria. 7. Art or craft not labeled as such will be labeled at the discretion of the art show committee. Unidentifiable work will be ineligible. 8. Adults will be judged separately from students and should include address on the entry blank. 9. All work submitted must have been done by the contestants themselves since the last contest. 10. Three-dimensional work is considered a craft unless the contest committee is advised differently. The work will be categorized at the discretion of the contest committee. 11. Paint-by-number, tracing, kits, molds of other direct copying will not be permitted. The committee's decision is final. In the craft category, plastic canvas, fabrics, etc. may be used. Patterns may be used but not kits for crafts. Woodworking is a three-dimen-sional wood project made by the individual since the last art show. 12. Photos are accepted if taken by the participant since the last art show. Photos may be black and

J.G. Schools Set Schedule Os Make-Up Days The 1993-94 school calendar is being adjusted to make up the three days that have been missed this year. Students will now attend school on Thursday and Friday, June 2 and 3, and on Monday, June 6. Seniors will not attend school on June 6. Teachers Record Day will be on June 7. Summer School classes are now scheduled for June 10 through July 8, with no classes to be held on July 4. Driver Education classes will start on Wednesday, June 8. Name Winners Os Bth Annual Falcon Follies The Bth annual Falcon Follies was held on Friday, March 11. The John Glenn High School auditorium was packed and there was "standing room only" as students performed a variety of acts. All of the performers did an excellent job. The winners of prize money were: First price — Barry Houser, Tap Dance. Second Place — Andy Dobbs and Rocky Plummer, Vocal/Acoustic Duet. Third Place (tie) — Joy Roberts, Piano Solo, and “Gitarzan A His Jungle Band", consisting of lip sync by Chris Jacobs, Ray Chapman, Jaime Kotoiinski, Chad Miller and Bill Jimerson. The judges were Dean Huppert, WSJV-TV; Cindy Ward, WSBTTV; Jack Reichert and Rob Poulin from SUNNY 101.5; and Shelli Yoder, Miss Indiana and Miss American Finalist. As a special treat, Shelli Yoder performed at the end of the show. Falcon Follies is becoming a very popular community event each year. It is the primary fundraiser for the John Glenn Scholarship Fund. Proceeds from this year’s Follies totaled over $1,500.00. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this year’s Falcon Follies such a success! white or in color and must be at least 35 square inches in size, including mat. Divisions will be elementary, middle school, high school and adult. 13. Judging will be on the basis of originality, composition, color and neatness. Art work is to be mounted or matted and can be no larger than 22 x 30 when finished. Framing is permissible in craft category only. 14. Each grade will be judged separately from another for PreKindergarten /Kindergarten thru Grade 8. Judges’ decisions arc final. 15. Consultation is permitted as long as the art submitted is the contestant’s own work. 16. Adult entries should be claimed immediately after the public showing ends at 4:00 p.m. E.S.T. on Sunday, April 17. 17. Liability: All entries and accepted works are submitted at the owner's risk. The art committee will do its best to care for the art work. A committee member will be present from the time the art work is brought in on Saturday morning until after the showing on Sunday or the building is locked.
