It has been brought to our attention that children have been purchasing butane fuel as a source of getting "high”. Butane, as other household items such as glue, solvents and aerosols, can be inhaled or "sniffed” causing nerve and brain damage, coma, respritory arrest and even death. The effects of inhalants include: nausea, sneezing, coughing, nosebleeds, feeling and looking tired, smell of solvent on breath, lack of coordination and loss of appetite. Children between the ages of 7 and 17 are most likely to use inhalants because they were readily available and inexpensive. Currently, there are no laws governing the sale of inhalents to minors so parents should see that these substances like medicines are kept away from young children.
