BMV UNVEILS NEW DESIGN FOR HOOSIER VETERAN LICENSE PLATE Gilbert L. Holmes, Commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, has announced a new design for the Hoosier Veteran special recogntion license plate. The newly-designed license plate, which features an American flag crossing an Indiana flag, utilizes a patriotic red, white and blue theme. “We feel this design perfectly captures the essence of what our armed services are all about,” said Commissioner Holmes. "Indiana owes a debt of gratitude to those who have helped preserve the freedoms we hold so dear." The Hoosier Veteran license plate, first introduced in 1991, is available to Indiana men and women who have served in any branch of the military and who have been honorably discharged. Last year. 3,568 Hoosier Veteran license plates were issued in Indiana. Plates may be purchased for passenger cars, recreational vehicles and trucks under 11,000 pounds. "The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is proud to offer these special recognition license plates to honor Hoosier servicemen and women who have unselfishly served our country." Community Club Makes Holiday Favors Friday Twenty one members of the GFWC Walkerton Woman’s Community Qub met at the Community Building on Friday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. It was a social service meeting. The projects were directed by Mildred Casey and Frieda Meyer. Valentine and Easter favors were made for residents of the Miller’s Merry Manor nursing home. The group broke for a sack lunch at noon. Delicious cakes and hot tea or coffee were served by Ann Rockwell and her hostesses, Alfreds Onika, Florence Vische, Gen England, Pam Kaplowitz and Caroline Hancovsky. The business meeting was opened at 1:00 p.m. President Barbara Simpson read a letter from the Indiana Federation asking the club's financial support for the endowment fund and their canine companion project that helps train dogs for the blind. Forty dollars was given by the members. Election of officers was held. Mildred Casey, chairman of the nominating committee, presented the slate. Alice Walker moved it be accepted. The motion was seconded and approved by the body. Those to take office in May are: Barbara Simpson, president; Carol Knop, vice president; Shirley Awald, secretary and Janet Bierly, treasurer. The Board of Directors will consist of Mildred McKesson, Alfreds Onika andd Alice Walker. The nominating committee will be Nadine Keiper, chairman; Helen Heymig and Pam Kaplowitz. Viola Bregi. Helen Bowies and Lucille Schuster were put on the honorary members roll since they are no longer able to attend meetings. The president reported that she has four new highway signs for the club which will be put up when the weather gets nicer. Mildred Nolcheff showed the beautiful afghan she has made for the club to raffle off at the First Source Bank in Walkerton. No date is as yet set for the raffle. Mildred Casey, Ella Remus and Pam Kaplowitz will be the new calling committee, starting in the fall. The president read a letter from "Fiends of the Fourth.” The group that puts on the festival at the fireworks display on the fourth of July in Walkerton. They were soliciting workers for that event. After some discussion. Alice Walker volunteered to get more information about what the club would be expected to do before we made a commitment. Members were reminded that the next meeting will be at 2:00 p.m. at Miller's Merry Manor on February 18 and to bring bingo prizes. Pam Kaplowitz was appointed as the nursing scholarship chairman. She reported she has sent forms to the school to be filled out by interested students. Birthday celebrants were Florence Vische and Gertrude Brehm. Bertrude drew the birthday present. A homemade valentine exchange was fun for all.
