JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES (continued from Page 1) ing a Wildcat motif on the gym wall; Walkerton Elementary School for winning an award for improving math scores in the state incentive program; Jared Pletcher for winning an opportunity to be present at the press session with the Chicago White Sox; and Venus Nieubuurt for being a finalist in the Indiana American Coed Pageant. Walkerton Elementary School fourth graders will be taking the Reading Assignment of the National Assessment Test. 100 schools from each state have been selected for a 1994 Reading Report Card. The 1992 Reading Report Card revealed that two-thirds of the nation's students were reading below proficiency levels. Mrs. Pickerell’s class has been selected as the winner of WSBT’s Great Expectation competion. A video of their thematic unit on Spain was submitted along with 82 entrants in the grades 3-5 competition. On February 10, WSBT and McDonalds will present a party for them and the participating parents. Walkerton Elementary School Reflection contest winners are: Literature — Amy Morris, Jared Shepherd, Emily Batman, Justin Easterday; Visual Arts — Stacey Bates, Angels Nifong, Bret Butler, Lisa Kizmicz; Music — Brittany Morris; Photography — Amy Stull, Stephanie Drotar. Mr. Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementary School, thanked Mrs. Amy Weiss who, excluding this year, has sponsored the Outsider’s Club which was based on outdoor activities and environment. The Indiana Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation have selected the Outsider's as a 1993 Earth Year Exemplary Program and listed the program in the "Earth Forever" book which has been distributed throughout the state. school. Mr. Kaufman recognized Mrs. Cathy VanDuyne as the North Liberty and John Glenn School Corporation Teacher of the Year. Out of approximately 160 students able to participate, 42% acheived listing on the Second Nine Weeks Honor Roll, 40% are listed on the First Semester Honor Roll, and 19 students made the First Improvement List. First Improvement List students improved at least one letter grade in three or more classes and are members of the ABBIT Society enabling them to receive rewards from the following supporters: North Liberty Citgo, Dr. Engel, Ist Source Bank of North Liberty, Ted’s Barber Shop, North Liberty School, Rrent Kaufman, North Liberty P.T.A. The North Liberty P.T.A. is sponsoring an Honor Roll Breakfast of February 4. Mr. Mike Shuler will be guest speaker. Mr. Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, reported that WJGF-TV was initiated through the use of the Channel I equipment already located in the high school. The students on the Academic Decathlon Team and sponsor Bruce Fleming were recognized for qualifying for the State Meet on February 11-12, 1994. Mr. Shuler recognized the John Glenn High School basketball team and coach Gordon Mosson for their Bi-County Championship. This was the Bth Bi-County Championship for John Glenn basketball teams and coach Mosson's Sth championship as a coach for John Glenn. This win ties Mr. Mosson with Phil Weybright, former coach at Argos for the most coaching wins at the BiCounty Tournament. Teachers in the areas of Agriculture. Business and Driver Education were recognized for their efforts in revising the curriculumns for Board approval at the next meeting. A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Gene Knowlton, to approve the gift of $335 from the Falcons 500 Club to Walkerton Elementary School for the purchase of basketball uniforms. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. NEW BUSINESS 1. Appointments a. Michael Nimon, I.C.E. Student Placement, Superintendent’s Office b. Kendall Hoover, Girls Intramural Sports, North Liberty Elementary School A motion was made by Gene Knowlton, seconded by Shirley Anderson, to approve the recommendation to appoint Michael Nimon for I.C.E. student placement at the superintendent’s office and Kendall Hoover to a position of Girls Intramural Sports at North
Liberty Elementary School. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. 2. Approve Chapter 2 and Eisenhower Grant Applications for 1993-94 A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Gene Knowlton, to approve Chapter 2 and Eisenhower grant applications for the 1993-94 school year. The Chapter 2 grant is for $12,858 and the Eisenhower grant is for $4,847. Both grants will be used for the inservice of math and science teachers and related instructional materials. St. Patrick's receives a portion of the grant funds on a per pupil basis. Following questions to Miss Ross who coordinates the Chapter 2 grant and Mr. Kaufman who administers the Eisenhower grant, the Board approved the motion by a seven to zero vote. 3. Review Proposed Job Sharing Policy The School Board reviewed a recommended Board Policy on job sharing for teachers. The policy will provide for two teachers to share a job enabling a teacher to continue their career and attend to responsibilities as a parent at home. The policy will receive further review by the School Board at a future Board meeting. 4. Approve John Glenn High School Academic Decathlon Team's Trip to State Finals on February 11-12, 1994 and for Six John Glenn High School Baseball Players and Coach to Attend a Baseball Camp at St. Joseph’s College on Febaury 26-27, 1994 A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Gene Knowlton, to approve the John Glenn High School Academic Decathlon Team’s trip to the State finals on February 11 and 12. 1994 and for six John Glenn High School baseball players and coach to attend a baseball camp on February 26 and 27. 1994 at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. 5. Award General Education Development Diploma to Jodeel Imbro By unanimous consent, the School Board approved the awarding of a General Education Diploma to Jedeel Imbro who has met the qualifications for a General Educa tion Development Diploma. REPORTS 1. Superintendent’s Reports The superintendent provided the School Board with information requested on the use of Urey School as an option for meeting middle school facility needs. The School Board was provided with information on the availability of Common School Fund Loan from the State, a list of older schools in the state that have been remodeled and added on to, site plan for Urey Middle School, a proposed list of items that should be included in the renovation of Urey, and a listing of program space requirements. Following discussion on the information presented and related concerns, a motion was made by Janice Ryan, seconded by Shirley Anderson to rescind School Board action of June 1, 1993 when the Board voted not to proceed with using Urey Middle School as an option for meeting the middle school facility needs. The motion passed by a six to one vote with Nilas Miller voting no. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. NEXT MEETING DATE The February 15, 1994 regular session Board meeting has been canceled and the Board will meet in a special session on February 22, 1994 for the purpose of training School Board members with an outside consultant about the performance of the role of the members as public officials. The next regular meeting of the School Board will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 1, 1994 at Walkerton Elementary School. ADJOURNMENT The School Board meeting was adjourned at 9:41 p.m. Glenn JV Loses Recent Contests John Glenn’s Junior Varsity boys basketball team was defeated by Knox, North Wood and Bremen, dropping their overall record to 7 wins and 5 defeats. The Falcons will host Jimtown January 28, at 6:30 and travel to Bremen the 29th. The Falcons looked strong at Knox in the first quarter building a 13 to 5 lead. An 8 point lead quickly turned into a 10 point defecit by the end of the third quarter. Though the Glenn J.V. outscored Knox 13 to 7 in the final stanza, the Falcons were still defeated 41 to 37. Doug Hill led Glenn with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. North Wood also built a lead on the Falcons and a late rally still found the home team on the short

end of a 57 to 51 final score. Glenn outscored NorthWcxxl 24 to 15 in the fourth quarter. Doug Hill worked inside for 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Jason Knepp collected 11 points and 6 rebounds. Glenn played Bremen in the first round of the J.V. Bi-County tournament at Bremen and never got untracked as the Lions put it to the Falcons by the score of 48 to 28. Glenn having injury problems this year, lost the services of Jason Knepp in the second quarter with a separated shoulder and will be out of action the remainder of the season. Tony Lidgard led the J.V. with 9 points and Rusty Slater gathered 4 rebounds. The Falcons were 3 for 10 from the freethrow stripe while the Lions took advantage of 20 attempts by connecting on 16 of them. The young Falcons will try to regroup for conference games on January 28 and 29 with Jimtown and on the road at Bremen. GLENN JV FALLS TO 77 The John Glen JV Boys basketball team was defeated twice this weekend by Jimtown and Bremen. Jimtown defeated Glenn 37 to 34. Glenn was leading the Jimmies 34 - ‘ 30, but failed to score the remaining three minutes resulting in the final score. T. J. Jackson led the Falcons with seven points and three steals. Dave Guseilla contributed 6 rebounds and 5 points ( while Doug Hill added 5 rebounds and 6 points. Other Glenn players in the scoring column wereas fol- * lows: Ed Pontius 6; Tony Lidgard 4; i Walter, Levandoski and Wiegand one basket each. Glenn trailed Bremen by three points at halftime and eight points [ at the end of three quarters before । falling to the Lions by the score of 55 to 34.
