north liberty By Gladys Sheneman Theresa (Ginzer) Holderbaum just returned from Negril, Jamaica, where she spent 7 days and 6 nights at the Yellow Bird Hotel with 13 friends. While in Jamaica Theresa parasailed, played volleyball, went to Rick’s Case to watch the sunset and eat a steak and lobster dinner, took a day trip to the Y.S. Falls and Lovers Leap. The weather was in the upper 90s and everyone enjoyed the sun and had lots of fun. Theresa said it was nice to return home though and eat homemade noodles and mashed potatoes. Our sympathy this week goes to our trustee. Martha Lambert and her family in the loss of her husband. Elmer. Congratulations goes to Mr. and Mrs. Gayton High, of South Bend, as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on February 7. Many of you will remember her as she was Mary McEndarfer and they always attend the retired neighbors and friends get together at the Pine Creek Church, which will begin again the first Tuesday in April. Gene and Norma Patrick celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary at the home of John and Celeste Dooms last Thursday evening, February 3rd. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kochanowski. Just talked to Sally Wilcox, who returned home Friday after being in an auto accident at Thanksgiving time and has been aw ay from home for seventy days. She still needs our prayers, a call or cheer up card. Geraldine (Howard) Medeiros, of Marysville, California, is here visiting her brother, Harris Howard, who is ill in his home. Please remember him and his family. Received word that a good friend, Helen Nyari, of State Road 23, had triple by-pass surgery in the St. Joseph Hospital this past week. Also received word that another good friend fell on the ice

and broke her left arm and right elbow as she got out of her car when she went to work, so please be careful. Jim and Gloria Risner celebrated their 32rd wedding anniversary with a dinner Saturday evening with their family. Those present were Tommy and Robin and daughter Stormy, Joy Risner and friend, Randy and Ed Pogodzinski. The ladies of the Mennonite C hurch spent last Tuesday quilting on a beautiful quilt. They will quilt again on the first Tuesday in March. Gladys Sheneman helped quilt in the afternoon. Elaine Wolfe had the misfortune of falling and breaking her wrist and hip on the 28th of December. She had the cast taken off her wrist today and stiches removed so she feels much better, but still needs our prayers, a call or cheer up card as that would be rough to have that all happen at the same time. Martha McCrosky had a terrible experience with her furnace. She woke up to find her house filled with smoke on their first cold Saturday night with 16 degrees below zero. She called for help and found the belt had broken. It was replaced and then the next Saturday night when the temperature was 21 degrees below zero, she was awakened again with the house full of smoke. A new motor was installed and due to the soot all over, her insurance company is cleaning and painting the whole inside of her house. She is very lucky that she woke up when she did. Aletha Croy's son, Dick Croy, and his family are very fortunate to be alive from fumes from their furnace that sent all five to the Plymouth Hospital Saturday morning where they remained all day. Please have your furnace checked if in doubt. Iva Pommert and Gladys Sheneman were Saturday dinner guests of Martha McCrosky. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Amm and son, Richard from Michigan City arrived about 4:00 p.m. and all attended the benefit ham and bean supper at the Community Building for the fireman and ambulance crew Happy to report we had a nice week for a change. Can’t believe it's February. Kaser's will soon be tapping their maple trees and I'm almost out of syrup too. Do any of you remember back in the 1930 s when you could buy a gallon of kerosene for 18 cents a gallon. Today it is over SI.OO a gallon. Back then that is what 1 used in a five burner oil stove that I cooked on and then we had to use it in our lamps, as we didn’t have electric. Back then bread was ten cents a loaf, today I pay over SI.OO for the bread I buy. A gallon of milk
was 12 cents and eggs were 22 cents a dozen. My telephone bill was $2.50 a month, now it runs over $30.00. Hard to believe how much things have changed, isn't it? Please remember Eric Springman who is in the St. Joseph Medical Center after receiving third degree burns at his work last Wednesday. He is critical and needs our prayers and a get well card. Betty McCormick and Ruth Finch visited Elaine Wagner and Eric Springman in the St. Joseph Medical Center on Sunday. Donn and Shirley McDaniel, of Rolling Meadows. Illinois, spent the weekend with Gail and Mae McDaniel. They attended the ( hurch of Christ Sunday morning and then all enjoyed dinner together in LaPorte before returning home. R.E.A.L.
