JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES January 27, 1994 Special CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in special session at 7:00 p.m. on January 17, 1994 in the Urey Middle School. All members were present. The School Board and superintendent opened the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. There were nine visitors to the Board meeting. A. The School Board met in a work session and discussed middle school facility needs. The discussion centered around the continuted used of Urey Middle School for grades seven and eight with an addition and renovation of the present facility. The School Board also discussed a seventh and eighth grade addition to John Glenn High School and athletic facility needs at the high school. The School Board reviewed financial issues related to construction of school facilities. The School Board requested additional information and it will have further discussion on middle school facility needs at the next School Board meeting. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on February 1, 1994 at North Liberty Elementary School. ADJOURNMENT The School Board meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. February 1, 1994 CALL TO^RDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on February 1, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Liberty Elementary School. All members were present. The School Board, superintendent and approximately 13 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the January 18, 1994 regular session and special session for January 27, 1994 were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS — 77 through 161 A motion was made by Rob Keck, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve claims numbered 77 through 161. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE None RECOGNATIONS 1. Technology Demonstration — Mrs. Cathy VanDuyne Mrs. Cathy VanDuyne and Mrs. Amy Weiss, teachers at North Liberty Elementary School, provided a demonstration on how technology is being used in the classroom to assist students with learning tasks. They were assisted by two third grade students. Andrew Groves and Nicole Bogard. They demonstrated the use of computers in writing a story along with pictures and sound effects. Mrs. Lightfoot, principal at Walkerton Elementary School, recognized the Falcon 500 Gub for their donation of $335 for the purchase of uniforms for the boys basketball program; Raymond Grossman for designing and paint - (continued on Page 9)
NORTH LIBERTY TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES The regular monthly North Liberty Town Council meeting was held at the Town Hall on February 2, 1994 and called to order at 7:02 by Thomas Daugherty, president. Other Council members present were Richard Warner and David Sheaks. Ronald Kinas and Dennis Fisher absent. The news media was represented by the South Bend Tribune, WSTB-TV. WSJV-TV. WNDU-TV and LaPorte Herald-Argus. Attorney John Peddycord. Utility Superintendent John Gouker and approximately 40 others present. Attendance register attached. Minutes from the January 12, 1994 meeting approved by a motion from Richard Warner, seconded by David Sheaks with unanimous aye. Thomas Daugherty advised that the Council had been in contact with Stericycle, and Stericycle has aked for a decision from the Council in regards to their locating here. Due to the two members being absent, a tentative meeting for this decision will be set for the week of February 16. 1994. Richard Warner then made a motion to set the date of Wednesday, February 16. 1994. Question on holding the meeting at the Communiuty Center. Community Center to be contacted for availability and date will then be publicized. Question if Stericycle would have a representative at the meeting to answer questions. Thomas Daugherty replied no. as the meeting will be for a Council vote, not going to have a four hour open meeting for people to talk from the floor. Have the public meetings and has gone on for almost two years. Council is going to discuss and vote for or against asking Stericycle to locate here. Requested that any information be given Council members to review. Also list of signatures opposing to be furnished. Richard Warner to review from Jami Vanden Bossche. Regards to test that Town had requested, Richard Warner stated through Sterilization Technical Services. test will not be run as Stericycle request Town to make decision on their rating and where they stand today with operational plants in New York and Wisconsin since this all started. David Sheaks stated enough information. both for and against, has been received for the Council to make a decision. Richard Warner stated Council has not dodged away from this situation and have been available for all sides of the issue. Sue Allsop requested the Council keep in mind the people and children and health and safety of the community and IDEM track record of keeping up on polution complaints. Jami Vanden Bossche stated she had been in contact with Susan Fink of Yorkville. Wisconsin, who advised her Stericycle not allowed to recycle only land fill in Wisconsin. Pamela Craft, president of the North Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce, read a letter from the Board members of the Chamber of Commerce advising the Town Council that they were in favor of locating Stencycle in the North Liberty Industrial Park. Parent-Senior Recognition Night February 18th Parent/Senior Recognition Night will be held on Friday, February 18, at our last home basketball game against Argos starting at 6:30 p.m. We will be recognizing all senior boys and girls who participated in basketball, wrestling, pep band, swing choir. Poms, and cheerleading, along with their parents. Parents are asked to meet at the east end of the gym immediately following the end of the JV game. FAN BUS FOR LA VILLE GAME FRIDAY The fan bus for the boys basketball game at LaVille on Friday. February 11. will leave North Liberty at 5:30 p.m. and Glenn at 5:45 p.m. Game time is 6:30 p.m. The cost to ride the fan bus is SI.OO for students and adults.
JOHN GLENN SETS FRESHMAN ORIENTATION The Guidance Department of John Glenn High School is planning a special meeting for all eighth grade students from Urey Middle School and their parents at 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 14. in the high school auditorium. All eighth grade students that come with one or both parents or guardian(s) will be able to select their locker in freshman hallway on a first come, first choice basis. Doors will open one-half hour earlier for the locker selection. In the past, students have filled in course selection sheets and then have taken them home to talk to parents. In the new format the freshman counselor will explain the freshman requirements and electives and students will select their options with their parents help. Tech Prep opportunities and college prep recommendations will be discussed.. The parents will get a much better understanding of the high school curriculum, the course selection possibilities, and how students begin a career plan. The program will acquaint students and parents with the high school administration, counselors and teachers. Some school policies, goals and opportunities will be explored. National Honor Society members will talk to small groups of students and take them on tours of the school. Students may hand their new schedules in on Monday night or take them home to discuss school and career plans with their parents and return them to Urey Middle School within a week. If parents need more help to answer questions or plan their students sched ule they can make an appointment at the high school on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon or evening until 6:00 p.m. Tax Preparation Assistance Program In N.L. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will be doing tai return preparation for the people 60 years of age and over This is a free service. This service will be held in the basement of the North Liberty United Methodist Church on Tuesday. February 22. from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.. or until the last person is served. It is very important to bring last year’s tax forms in order to expedite the process of preparing this year’s form. Any questions please call 6563916 10:00 am. until 2:00 p.m. LINCOLN TOWNSHIP 4-H ENROLLMENT Tuesday. February 15th, Lincoln Township 4-H Gub will be taking enrollment for 1994. Sign up will be between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. at the Walkerton Youth Building. There is Gover Buds for youngsters from 3 to ’ years; Mini 4 H for 8 and 9 years olds. WALKERTON TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on January 17, 1994 with the following members present: Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell. Cheryl Rizek, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Attorney David Holmes and clerk-treasurer Judy Hiler were also present. Approval of the previous minutes was postponed in order that the Council would have time to read them. There was no Citizen's Input. OLD BUSINESS: Randy Verkier and Bob Cuzinski. County Highway Department, met with Cheryl Rizek. Len Jaske and the clerk on January 7th about the Harrison Street bridge. Verkier and Cuzinski explained that the county is only responsible for the bridge; including wing walls, side walls, head walls, deck and guard rails. The Town is responsible for the approaches Jaske said that they were very cooperative, and offered to come down to advise us when we being the work. Jeff Zehner said that we only annexed the south side of the road, therefore that is the only part that belongs to the Town. The north side of the bridge still remains in the county. Repair of the approaches will be included in our street paving next spring. in a letter, the Walkerton Industrial Fund. Inc. asked if they can arrange a pay back schedule of their $22,000.00 loan from the Town. They propose to pay the Town back at a rate of $1,000.00 per acre sold in the Northeast Industrial Park. Last year, a payback of this loan was extended to January. 1994. After some discussion, it was decided to research this loan, and make a decision at the next meeting President Rizek said that the Council had previously discussed town employees attendance at the various schools that the Town would be paying for. Rizek made the motion that an employee has to attend every class, that the Town pays for, or reimburse the Town for the time that is missed. The only excuses would be illness, with a doctor's excuse, or a death in the family. Seconded by Len Jaske. Carried. The employee s supervisor will be responsible for checking to see if the employee has attended all the classes. Gene Reese made the motion co ask Jay Potts to attend the February 21st Council meeting to go over the 10-year Park budget that he has submitted. Seconded by Walt Heil. Carried. Jeff Zehner reported that he and John McGovern have looked at used tub grinders, but doesn't think that he will request solid waste grant money for a grinder So far other communities aren't interested in leasing the tub grinder from us Zehner is considering applying for the grant money to purchase a one ton dump truck, lawnmowers, chain saws, etc Len Jaske said that with the new laws, concerning landfills, we will need something soon to reduce solid waste. Zehner said that as of October 1. 1994. yard waste will not be allowed at landfills tn Indiana Dave Bolze suggested buying a chipper just for yard waste.
