The school-level Bec, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the sixth annual National Geography Bee. which is sponsored by National Geographic WORLD, the Society's magazine for children, and Amtrak. The kickoff for this year’s Bee was the week of December 13, with thousands of schools around the United States, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Kevin Bullock, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee April 8. The National Geographic Society with its co-sponsors will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D C., for state champions and their teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geography Bee national championship on May 24 and 25. The first-place national winner receive a $25,000 college scholarship; the second-place winner, a $15,000 scholarship; and the third-place winner, a SIO,OOO scholarship. The National Geographic Society developed the National Geography Bee in response to a growing concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Society in 1988 and 1989 found that people in the U.S. ages 18 to 24 — the youngest group surveyed — knew less about geography than young people in any of the other countries in the survey. The National Geographic Society, with 9.6 million members, has as its mission the "increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge." In addition to the National Geography Bee, the Society sponsors a number of other geography education initiatives, including summer geography institutes for teachers, the National Geographic Society Education Foundation, and the Geographic Alliance Network, which is currently working in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. ON DEAN’S LIST Byron McGregor Craft, a junior from North Liberty, Indiana, is among 345 DePauw University students who have been recognized for outstanding academic performmance and named to the Dean's List for the fall semester at DePauw University. To be eligible for the Dean's List at DePauw, a student must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average out of a possible 4.0 points.
