FALCONS EDGE C.M.A. FOR 81-COONTY TITLE The John Glenn Falcons on Monday night made a little history as the senior dominated squad of coach Gordon Mosson won their eighth Bi-County Tourney title. A 55-53 victory over the Culver Military Academy Eagles gave the Falcons their record eighth title, breaking the tie they held with Bremen, a first round victim in this year's clash. It also was the fifth title under the guidance of Gordon Mosson. which ties him for the most coaching wins with the former Argos mentor. Phil Weybright. who had the Argos powerhouses of the late 70 s and very early 80 s. The victory was Glenn's 12th of the Season in 14 starts. Losses have been to two teams that were ranked when they defeated Glenn. South Bend Gay in the season opening Shootout at Notre Dame, and Plymouth in the Holiday Cassie Tourney. And there is little rest for the Falcons at this time as they will play two key Northern State Conference games this weekend which could put the lid on that title should they win both matches with Jimtown and Bremen. Although heavily favored in this title game, the Falcons had their hands full, thanks to a couple of varying reasons. First of all. Jayson Kincaid, the leading scorer at the time and one of the senior trio that dominates the scoring for Glenn, missed the contest due to the flu bug which just hit on Monday. The second reason was Mitch Henderson. CM As standout, who is an exceptional athlete and a player who has scored over 1,000 points in his high school career. He almost single-handed kept the Eagles within range and fittingly so. hit a three-pointer for the last points of the game to make it a final tw o point margin of victory. The Eagles did gain the early lead in this game. Jumping to a quick 6-1 lead before things really settled down, behind the leadership of Henderson they held this lead until shortly before halftime It varied at different points, the Eagles leading 15-12 after one quarter, and enjoying their largest lead at 26-19 well into the second stanza Henderson had seven points in the first period to pace the Eagles while Nathan Lichtenbarger had three baskets for the Falcons m the first stanza After assuming their largest lead at 2b-19, the Eagles then felt the sting of the Falcon defense and the effects of their offensive potential as coach Mosson s crew made a big 18-2 run that earned well into the third period This boosted Glenn to their largest lead of the night, a 3’-28 lead before the Eagles countered with three three-point goals. This outside shooting was a weapon well used by both teams as this was instrumental in Glenn s big run that started in the second quarter. In the middle of this run, Glenn held the lead by one, 29-28. at halftime, only to get the first eight points of the second half The pesky CMA team got back tn the game and stayed close the rest of the way. They cut Glenn’s lead to a single point. 44-43 early m the final stanza, but Toby Gardner and Jason Groves steadied the Falcons down and Glenn added enough free throws late in the contest to hold on for the win Gard(continued on Page 12)
