JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES Regular & Executive Session January 4, 1994 CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on January 4, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present. The School Board, superintendent and approximately 28 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the December 7, 1993 regular session and the December 29, 1993 special session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS 2,287 Through 2,476 A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Rob Keck, to approve claims numbered 2,287 to 2.476. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE 1. Lori Jacob Mrs. Jacob read a letter to the School Board congratulating Janice Ryan on her appointment to the School Board. 2. Gary Crone Mr. Crone spoke to the School Board in response to an article in the South Bend Tribune on December 30, 1993 concerning the appointment of new School Board member Janice Ryan. 3. Jeff Johnson Mr. Johnson responded to statements made by Mr. Crone to the School Board. RECOGNITIONS John Glenn High School math teachers John Hostrawser, Bruce Fleming, Jill Davis and Mary Jo Cox provided the School Board and those in attendance a hands on demonstration on the use of graphing calculators in teaching math. The calculators are used by students in all levels of mathematics to solve and graph equations. The calculators enhance learning of mathematics and are not a substitute to mastery of mathematics skills and concepts. The graphing calculators are an excellent example of how technology is being used in the education of students in the John Glenn School Corporation. Mr. Reese, principal of Urey Middle School, announced the Urey P.T.A. Citizenship winners for the months of November and December: November — Robbie Whitmer, eighth grade son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Whitmer of Walkerton; Sarah Dooms, seventh grade daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dooms of North Liberty. December — Andy Zellers, seventh grade son of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Zellers; Scott Ruby, eighth grade son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ruby of Walkerton. Mrs. Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary School, thanked Ray & Kenny's for their donation of $706.43. A motion was made by Shirley Anderson, seconded by Tom McCormick, to approve the donation from Ray de Kenny's to Walkerton Elementary School for $706.43. Walkerton 1994 Animal Tags Are Now Available The 1994 Walkerton Animal tags are now on sale at the clerk-treas-urer's office. Fees are as follows: Each altered dog or cat — $2.00. Eich unaltered dog or cat — SIO.OO. Except upon a statement from a licensed veterinarian that neutering shall constitute a threat to the health of said animal, the fee shall be —55.00. Senior Citizens (age 62 or older) upon presentation of written verification from a licensed veterinarian that said animal(s) have been spayed or neutered, the fee shall be (no part of which will be paid to the Town) — SI.OO. Replacement tag — $2.00. Town controlled Animal Permit: Fee, per animal — SIOO.OO. Pet Shop/Breeder Permit — $50.00. Dangerous Animal/Attack Dog Permit: Fee per animal — $50.00. Animal Performance of Exhibit Permit: Fee — SIOO.OO. You must bring proof that your animal has had it's rabies shot and has been neutered. Receipts, for these things, from your veterinarian, will serve as proof. If you choose not to have your animal neutered, the licensing fee is higher. The St. Joseph County Humane Society will be here from 12 o’clock noon until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. January 13, 1994, to assist those who want to license pit bulls or apply for a breeder’s permit. Applications for dangerous animal/attack dog permits, pet shop/ breeder permits and animal performance/exhibition permits can be picked up at the clerk-treas-urer’s office ahead of time. Jan. 12 John Glenn High School Guidance Department will present a Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday, January 12th, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Cindy Kunzman, Financial Aid Advisor at Manchester College, will present information on various sources of financial aid available at the federal, state and local levels to help pay for any education past high school. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be handed out and gone over with detailed information on how to complete the form. This workshop is designed specifically for the parents of vocationally or college bound seniors, but anv one interested may attend. NOTICE Any customer of the Walkerton Electric Utility, who is on a life support system, is requested to register his or her name and address at the clerk-treasurer's office at 510 Roosevelt Road. Those persons who are registered will receive first consideration if electric service is, for any reason, interrupted. You are required to bring identification and a medical or doctor's statement with you, when you register.

FAN BUS INFORMATION FOR 81-COUNTY TOURNEY The fan bus for the boys basketball game on Wednesday, January 19, will leave North Liberty at 5:30 p.m. and Glenn at 5:45 p.m. Glenn will play Bremen starting at 6:30 p.m. If the team advances for the semi-finals and championship game, on Friday, January 21, the fan bus will leave North Liberty at 6:15 and Glenn at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, January 22, will leave North Liberty at 6:30 p.m. and Glenn at 6:45 p.m. The cost to ride the fan bus is SI.OO for adults and students.
Candidates For School Board Forum Jan. 25 Are you running for school board? The Indiana School Boards Association will hold a Forum for candidates to learn what it takes to be an informed, effective public school board member. ISBA staff members will be leading this informative workshop. Some of the must-know topics for school board members they will be discussing are: • Roles & Responsibilities of School Board Members • Open Meetings • Executive Sessions • Collective Bargaining • School Finance • Mandates from the state legislature. A SIO.OO registration fee, payable at the door, include the workshop and a school board candidate's kit filled with valuable information about becoming a school board member. There is no need to register in advance. These forums are to be held all around the state, but the one to serve this area will be held at the media center in Plymouth High School on Tuesday, January 25. NOTICE SMOKE DETECTOR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE TOWN OF WALKERTON ORDINANCE NO. 1988-01, SECTION 6 Between January 1 and January 31 of each year the landlord of each dwelling unit or mobile home in which a smoke detector has been installed shall certify in writing on forms prescribed by the town to the Fire Department of the Town of Walkerton that the required maintenance has been performed on all detectors in the owner’s units and that the detectors are in good working condition as of the date of certification. Each owner shall certify to each new occupancy of any dwelling unit and mobile home covered by this ordinance that all smoke detectors required have been installed and are in proper working condition. Bi-County Meet Is Featured All Week Jan. 17-22 Lhc 29th Annual Bi-County Tourney will be center stage this next week as a week-long schedule of games will be culminated with the crowning of four champions on Saturday. January 22. The main attraction, the boys varsity meet, will unfold on Tuesday night, continue Wednesday, and then have the semi-finals on Friday and the championship game Saturday night all at LaVille High School, the only setting this tournament has ever had. During the rest of the week, action will feature the girls varsity teams, the boys and girls B-teams, all with their champions being crowned Saturday. The full week of basketball is spread over several sites and is arranged so fans can see ail of their school’s action with no conflicts of your own school. At LaVille on Tuesday night, the varsity competition will unfold with Argos meeting Culver Military at 6:30 p.m. This will be followed by Culver Community and LaVille at approximately 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, the only two winning records in the tourney will square off in game one as Bremen and John Glenn meet first with the last first round game featuring Oregon-Davis and New Prairie. Varsity action then will wait until Friday night when the two Tuesday night winners will meet at 7:00 p.m. with the Wednesday winners meeting at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday night, the girls varsity championship will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the boys varsity championship scheduled for 8.30 p.m. In related play, the same pairings that the varsity teams have will be followed throughout play. The girls competition on Monday night will be at Argos, Culver. Bremen and Oregon-Davis. The first game at each site is scheduled to be the boys B-team. followed by the girls B-team and then the girls varsity. At Bremen, the Falcons will have the boys B-team playing in the boys gym at 6:30 p.m. with the girls B-team in the girls gym at 6:30 p.m. and the girls varsity following at 8:00 p.m. On Thursday night the girls varsity will play their semi-final games at Bremen with the top bracket featuring the Argos and Culver winners playing at 6:30 and the Bremen and Oregon-Davis winners advancing to the 8:00 p.m. game. The girls finals will then be played as usual, at LaVille on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. The B-team Monday night winners will advance to Bremen on Saturday at 9:00 am. The girls ganys will be played in the two gyms at 9:00 a.m. with the boys following at 10:30 a.m. The girls B-team championship will then begin at 12:00 noon and the boys championship game at 1:30 p.m. Tickets for the boys varsity tournament at LaVille are on sale at John Glenn High School through Friday, January 14. The tickets for the four sessions at LaVille are $7.00. Session tickets, available at the door only on the night of play, are $3.00 per session. Tickets for the girls varsity and the boys and girls B-team action for Monday, Thursday and Saturday at Bremen, are $2.00 per person per session.
