OBITUARIES
WILLIAM C. ZERLER William C. “Wid” Zerler, 88, of 7993 N. Tippecanoe Drive (Koontz Lake) Walkerton, died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday in LaPorte Hospital. He was born May 8, 1905, in Chicago, living here for the past 28 years. On June 15, 1929, in Chicago, he married Lois N. Whitehead, who survives. Mr. Zerler was a pipefitter foreman for 40 years with Sinclair Refining Co., East Chicago, Indiana. Also surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Curran, of Merrillville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Zerler was a member of Masonic Triluminar Lodge 767 of Riverdale, Illinois, Koontz Lake Association, and the Koontz Lake Conservation Cub and was a past Koontz Lake patrolman. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel. Burial was in Grovertown Cemetery. EVELYN ELIZABETH GARDNER Evelyn Elizabeth (Wyatt) Gardner, 94, of Camden, Indiana, died at 6:17 p.m. Monday, December 27, in St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi. A retired scholteacher, she was born February 5, 1899, in Camden. She graduated from Camden High School in 1916 and from Franklin College in 1920. Mrs. Gardner taught school for 44 years in North Liberty, Rolling Prairie and Camden and in Ferguson, Missouri. She retired in 1964. She married William E. Gardner on June 10, 1926 in Camden. He died February 15, 1977. Surviving are a son, Howard Gardner, of Eureka, California; and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Cem, of Camden. FERN K. GROTE Fern K. Grote, 91, of 504 S. Detroit St., Warsaw, formerly of Walkerton, died January 4. She was born February 10, 1902, in Blackfoot, Idaho to Charles and Kate Leone (Van Buren) Killian. On December 23, 1934, in Ohio, she married Arthur A. Grote, who died in 1967. Mrs. Grote was a 4th grade teacher retiring from the Oregon-Davis Schools. She attended the Wesleyan Church in Silver Lake. Surviving arc a daughter, Mrs. George (Betty) Grote; four grandchildren; and four great-grand-children; one sister, Mrs. Cem Shelton, Sandy, Utah; and three brothers, Cyde Killian, Bumal, Utah, Los Killian, Santa Barbara, California, and Wynn Killian, Ogden, Utah. Two sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. Services will be held at 11:00 a m. Friday. January 7, in the Channess-Tucker Funeral Home, Caypool, with Rev. Jimmy Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Pletcher and Steven W. Beem have been named to the dean's list for the fall quarter of the academic year at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Pletcher is the son of Dirk and Kay Pletcher, 505 Indiana Street, Walkerton, and Beem is the son of Norman and Jean Ann Beem, 10999 South 600 East. Hamlet. They was among 418 undergraduate students who earned at least a 3.3 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), according to Jess R. Lucas, vice president for student affairs. Rose-Hulman is a private engineering and science college that has been cited by U.S. News & World Report and other national publications as one of America's best colleges. Rose-Hulman, which has an enrollment of 1,300 students, offers degrees in chemical, civil, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering; applied optics; chemistry; computer science; economics; mathematics; and physics. Pletcher is a sophomore in chemical engineering and Beem is a senior in mechanical engineering
