JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES December 29, 1993 Special Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in special session on December 29, 1993 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present along with school attorneys Richard Hill and Thomas Bruner. The School Board and superintendent opened the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 49 visitors to the Board meeting. Mr. Patrick introduced Janice K. Ryan, new Board member appointed by Judge Terry Crone of St. Joseph County Circuit Court on December 23, 1993 to fill the vacancy created with the resignation of John McGee. NEW BUSINESS 1. Discussion of whether written preliminary notice shall be sent to the Assistant Principal of Athletics notifying him that the Board of School Trustees is considering a decision not to renew his contract. School attorneys Richard Hill and Thomas Bruner discussed with the School Board the detailed legal process involved in the cancellation of an administrator’s contract. Following questions by the Board on procedural matters, Shirley Anderson made a motion, seconded by Rob Keck, to give written preliminary notice to Mike Gark, Assistant Principal of Athletics, that the Board of School Trustees will consider a decision not to renew his contract. The motion was defeated by a three to four vote with Nilas Miller, Gene Knowlton, Tom McCormick and Janice Ryan voting no. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on January 4, 1994 at John Glenn High School. ADJOURNMENT The School Board meeting adjourned at 7:SO p.m. NOTICE The St. Joseph County Humane Society will be at the Walkerton Police Station on Thursday, January 13, 1994, from 12 o’clock noon until 4:30 p.m. They will be here to assist those who want to license pit bulls or apply for a breeder's permit. Application for dangerous animal/attack dog permits, pet shop/ breeder permits and animal performance/exhibition permits can be picked up at the Police Station or the clerk-treasurer’s office ahead of time. 2tjl2 NOTICE Any customer of the Walkerton Electric Utility, who is on a life support system, is requested to register his or her name and address at the clerk-treasurer’s office at 510 Roosevelt Road. Those persons who are registered will receive first consideration if electric service is. for any reason, interrupted. Walkerton 1994 Animal Tags Are Now Available The 1994 Walkerton Animal tags are now on sale at the clerk-treas-urer's office. Fees are as follows: Each altered dog or cat — $2.00. Each unaltered dog or cat — SIO.OO. Except upon a statement from a licensed veterinarian that neutering shall constitute a threat to the health of said animal, the fee shall be-$5.00. Senior Citizens (age 62 or older) upon presentation of written verification from a licensed veterinarian that said animal(s) have been spayed or neutered, the fee shall be (no part of which will be paid to the Town) — SI.OO. Replacement tag — $2.00. Town controlled Animal Permit: Fee, per animal — SIOO.OO. Pet Shop/Breeder Permit — $50.00. Dangerous Animal/Attack Dog Permit: Fee per animal — $50.00. Animal Performance of Exhibit Permit: Fee — SIOO.OO. You must bring proof that your animal has had it's rabies shot and has been neutered. Receipts, for these things, from your veterinarian, will serve as proof. If you choose not to have your animal neutered, the licensing fee is higher. Please call 586-3711 if you have any questions. 2tjl2 BENDIX WOODS INNERTUBING HILL CLOSED Snow-making equipment break down has resulted ia the Bendix Woods County Park innertubing hill being closed. "Equipment replacement of over $75,000 is not feasible at any time in the future," reports superintendent of Recreation Jill Geyer. "Over the past eight winter seasons, the winter sports program at Bendix Woods has become increasingly popular. We regret that this program must be discontinued. Without the proper equipment we cannot be certain that the hill is safe." However, the department encourages patrons to visit tubing hills at St. Patrick's County Park in South Bend (take Business U.S. 31 north to Auten Road, turn west one mile, then north onto Laurel Road), and Ferrettie/Baugo County Park in Osceola (take U.S. 20 east to County Line Road and turn south over the St. Joseph River. Park is one mile south.) Innertubing cost is $3.00 per person (not recommended for children under 5 years) plus gate entry fee of $2.00 St. Joseph County vehicle or $3.00 out-of-county vehicle. For more information on tubehill conditions, call 277-4828. NOTICE Bill’s Barber Shop, 408 Illinois Street, Walkerton, will be closed for vacation from Friday, January 7 until Tuesday, February 1.

Student Art Show At J.G.H.S. This Saturday The John Glenn High School Art Department invites the public to its 21st annual student show on Saturday, January 8, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. during the boys home varsity basketball game versus Triton. Kelly Harrington, art teacher at North Liberty Elementary School, will be judging the show. First, second and third place awards will be presented in the categories of basic art, drawing, illustration, oil painting, sculpture and photography. People's Choice and Best of Show will also be awarded. Admission is free. Musical entertainment and refreshments will be provided, so come and enjoy the show! NOTICE SMOKE DETECTOR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE TOWN OF WALKERTON ORDINANCE NO. 1988-01, SECTION 6 Between January 1 and January 31 each year the owner of each dwelling unit or mobile home in which a smoke detector has been installed shall certify in writing on forms prescribed by the town to the Fire Department of the Town of Walkerton that the required maintenance has been performed on all detectors in the owner’s units and that the detectors are in good working condition as of the date of certification. Each owner shall certify to each new occupancy of any dwelling unit and mobile home covered by this ordinance that all smoke detectors required have been installed and are in proper working condition. 81-County Tourney Tickets On Sale At John Glenn Tickets for the boys varsity basketball Bi-County Tournament are now on sale at John Glenn High School. On Tuesday, January 18, Argos plays C.M.A. starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by Culver versus LaVille. On Wednesday, January 19, Glenn plays Bremen at 6:30 p.m. followed by OregonDavis versus New Prairie. Winners from Tuesday night will return to play the first game on Friday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. followed by the winners from Wednesday night. Tickets are priced at $7.00 and are available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00. p.m. through January 14. Plan Financial Workshop For J.G.H.S. Jan. 12 John Glenn High School Guidance Department will present a Financial Aid Workshop on Wednesday, January 12th, at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Cindy Kunzman, Financial Aid Advisor at Manchester College, will present information on various sources of financial aid available at the federal, state and local levels to help pay for any education past high school. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid will be handed out and gone over with detailed information on how to complete the form. This workshop is designed specifically for the parents of vocationally or college bound seniors, but any one interested may attend. Youth Free Throw Contest All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 1994 Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held January 15th at 9:00 a.m. at the Walkerton Elementary School. The International Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually by the K of C with winners progressing through local, district and state competition. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state level competitions. All boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in respective age divisions. Last year more than 212,000 sharpshooters participated in 3,099 local competitions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in this event. Participants will be required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent.
