VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “Rumors” Lately I've been hearing rumors about many things. Businesses not being opened or being closed. I even hear rumors that I am rich. This is usually circulated by car salesmen, who want to sell me a car. Sorry to say fellows, this isn't true. 1 don't know what you are concerned about, I usually buy locally. What this is all leading up to is “The Hair Shack is not closing The owner called me the other morning in regards to this rumor. I told her that I would try and help. Circumstances sometimes dictate us to do things that cause much speculation. Thus, rumors are bom. Well, last week we went to Indianapolis for Fifth District Day. Do you know that your senator is Bill Alexa? This gentleman was given a district that wanders thru parts of Lake. It was a bright and sunny day. I pushed through an unfamiliar door, rhe man who *409 appeared to be the owner, a jovial sort, wel- qB amF « blk fl K '*4 corned me. I asked him if he was having a sale. HR And he said, “Sure ... all week. This is the Brass arw J" " Lion”. I walked through the store and was looking at what must have been 100 pair of dress slacks when I heard that voice . . . “May I help you?” There stood the most pleasant person I’d ever met. “I like your tie,” he said. Over the next hour, we shared . . . many thoughts about life. “Today’s sale price is . . .” “How do you like your car?” “I like summer, too.” You see, I had reached the V Service Zone. Can I get you anything more? Sock? Belt? I told him I’d be back. He said, “I a-L# Istvan A know”. He knew. We’re more than Lip Service. We’re the Brass Lion. Lill JDIuUS ILIOH for him/for her
Starke and St. Joseph counties. Jon Smith and friend Cathy joined Roy and me, and boarded the bus at Hamlet. It was snowing like crazy and I wore my boots. After picking up people from Plymouth and heading south, I was glad that I had brought other shoes. Northern Indiana weather is strange! We had an excellent buffet of corned beef and cabbage, turkey, rice and all sorts of salads and desserts. Wanda, the carrot cake wasn't quite as good as yours. After a tour of the capitol building, we were allowed into the Senate chambers and we were allowed to ask questions of our Representatives. The houses were not meeting on that day because they were working on committees. I asked our Senator about our stoplight and was told that no one had contacted him. Senator Alexa said that the state highway had total control over this problem. Maybe we can get him to push for us. Write him your views on this matter. The Governor and Lt. Governor, having been involved in St. Patrick’s Day parade, were not available to meet with us. All in all we had an informative and pleasant day. There is one rumor that I would like to hear. That the Walkerton Town Board, the Chamber of Commerce, and all of the local organizations are working together for a better Walkerton. Working together, people can do wonders. Sincerely, Nedra Williams Some desire is necessary to keep life in motion.

R.E.A.L. SERVICES NEWS WALKERTON On Monday Harold and Hazel were unable to be at REAL Services because of Harold being in LaPorte Hospital. Hazel sent some vegetables to us. Thank you Harold and Hazel. Get well soon and come back to “REAL Services”. Tuesday Mr. Stuntz gave us a talk about the state of Oklahoma, in native tongue means the "Land of the Red People”. In the 1700’s 62 tribes lived there. In 1823 the government took 5 more tribes there and Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creet, Siminols and Iroquois made them a treaty that it is their home forever, and gave them all they needed. Then white men wanted
, the country so the government put * them on reservations and on April 22, 1889 many emigrants lined up at a signal sped with covered wagons to stake their claim. In later years famous people such as Mickey Mantle, the 536 home run ballplayer, Jim Thorpe, a Fox Indian starred in 1912 Olympics, William Rodgers with his rope tricks and humor. Oklahoma has many big parks, some with buffalo. I visited chief Lightening, a Cherokee in a small town where he had a nice store. Wednesday Jessie Schaeffer had the program. We talked about back in the 1930’s when John Dillinger had been in our area and remembering the police being out by the railroad track and watching all of the cars that passed by there. We happened to be on one of the cars. We girls were really scared. That was a short time before he was shot to death by federal agents in Chicago. Thursday Mr. Gwin talked to us about “St. Patrick", how he converted the Irish to Christianity. He was commerated a Saint when he wouldn’t join up with the catholics in Rome and that is still causing the trouble between Rome and England. Dick Madson, from the REAL Services in South Bend, talked to us also. Friday we had our regular sing-a-long with Verice Walz at the piano and Evadene Platz leading the singing. Vi Wolff and Maxine Worthington will be with us March 31. Come and join us at REAL Services and enjoy the fellowship. Call Betty Clapper one day ahead at 5867600.
