VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “Commend Town Board” I would like to commend those members of the Town Board of North Liberty who continue to keep their promise to area residents for the independent study on Stericycle's process of decontamination. I realize there is vocal support in the meetings for the request of the independent survey to be dropped, but there are many residents who support the Town Board's decision, who cannot, due to conflicting scheduling, attend the meetings. The group of residents who formed to oppose Stericycle’s location in Michigan City and North Liberty are continually contacted by other towns across the country for information about Stericycle. Our fight received national attention in an environmental paper, Citizens Clearinghouse For Hazardous Waste. Upon request we have sent the same information we shared with the Town Board, and from that information, residents in those towns have organized to stop Stericycle from locating in their communities. Those many other organizations only serve to confirm our fears of Stericycle’s integrity, and its process. An independent study should be embraced by Stericycle. They, one would think, would be eager to have an independent source prove

what they have stated is truth. Until a study is done without parameters chosen by Stericycle is completed, 1 think people should remain skeptical. Jami Vanden Bossche “Fan-Tastic” The 1992-93 John Glenn Basketball, (Fan tastic). We were treated to a great season this year by some outstanding kids, both on and off the court. The boys played hard. The cheerleaders did a great job. The Pep Band, simply the best, and the student body — terrific. We didn’t win the sectional. I’ve heard and given different comments around town about that. Fans are fans. They go to the games for the ezcitment, and well, most time, ve get caught up in it (it's great isn't it?). If an official makes a bad call we let him know. (We get a chance to release our frustrations that way.) Talking to some friends from Bremen, they told me how the town's windows were decorated (beat Falcons, win Sectional). Things like that, and how the whole town was ready for the game. 1 can't quite figure out why I didn’t see anything in Walkerton or North Liberty. Surely we didn’t take Bremen for granted. They are a fine team, with a good coach (just like Glenn). I’m sure if we had pulled that game out, Bremen’s fans would be writing to Voice of the People instead of us.

The simple fact is that, Bremen came tc nlay. Emotions run high for sectional games. Basketball is a game of emotions. You have your highs and your lows. So if you hear someone yell, shoot the ball, or why can’t we hit anything, it's because they’re into the game. If you’re not emotionally involved in the game, maybe you should listen to it on the radio. Or in my case maybe I should. As far as enjoying a competitive athletic event, I’d rather kiss my sister. But when it comes to winning give me John Glenn Basketball because you are winners — each and every one. For the seniors on the team, Aaron Casteel, Russell Burch, Jay Cotton and Brian Perry, you will be sorely missed next year. Thank you for a wonderful and exciting year in basketball. An for the returning players, remember the Alamo. Truly A John Glenn Fan Randy Williams “Firworks Legislation” The Indiana General Assembly is considering a bill which would make it legal to use fireworks which shoot into the air and explode. I have noticed that the fireworks wholesalers promotion this new law are saying that these fireworks really are not dangerous. As one family who suffered the death of a loved one from these fireworks, we can tell you that what they are saying is NOT true. On July 5, last year our family was gathered at a lake cottage for our annual holiday celebration. One of our family members had bought and was igniting some fireworks, including some large, cylindrical, tube-type that shoot up in the air. He got these at a fireworks wholesale outlet in a nearby community. One of these had several tubes on it and was suppose to be lit once and then the other tubes would be ignited one after another automatically. The device was lit and the first three went up in the air. But the force of the third tube knocked over the device. The next one shot sideways toward the family watching at a distance. The firework struck my wife in the head as she sat at the picnic table. It knocked her to the ground and she lost consciousness. We rushed her to the hospital, and she was later transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where she died of massive head injuries. Incidentally, I have heard some say that our tragedy was caused by careless misuse of the fireworks, or that the device was “homemade.” This is also not true, and I resent that this false claim is being circulated by fireworks dealers in an effort to cover up the real fact that the explosive fireworks themselves are the problem. The fact is we took extra caution in placing and igniting the fireworks. Frankly, I wanted to sue the responsible parties. But rather, my family and I determined that if we could ever do anything to keep this tragedy from happening to another “grandma" and her family, that we certainly would. I know everyone likes fireworks, and the sparklers and fountain things are fine. But the bigger, explosive fireworks are very dangerous and unpredictable. We know that now, but unfortunately we found this out too late. We have urged legislators to vote “NO" on this proposed law. A "yes" vote may cost another FOR RENT NORTH LIBERTY COMMUNITY CENTER AIR CONDITIONED Renting For All Occasions 300 S. Main Street Phone 656-4134

family as dearly as it has cost ours. The fireworks dealers can say what they want, but we can tell you from personal experience that these kind of firworks can kill. If we can keep these fireworks from hurting or killing someone else, then our wife, mother, and grandma will not have died for nothing. Sincerely, The Family of the Late Ida Marie Dunphy Donald D. Dunphy, Sr. and Children “Voice” Several years ago, the entire northern portion of Indiana was socked in by snow for almost a week. Scoops and trucks were needed to haul out the snow. I listened to the national news reports. Nothing was ever mentioned about our blizzard. The area didn't even consider asking for disaster relief. We wouldn’t have gotten it anyway. Now the eastern coastal area received what we used to call everyday winter. The national news talks for hours about the storm. The area needs government aid. People died. Why? Many died in wind storms in the southern areas. What were the hikers doing in the mountains with the warnings of a major storm approaching? We heard for many days about the rapidly arriving storm. Maybe their weatherman axe like our local ones, incorrectly forcasting the weather. We have

so many incorrect forecasts, that many of the area residents think just the opposite of a forecast. Ninety-nine percent of the time this winter this was true. Maybe the meterologists should become weathermen again. Maybe they should stick their heads out the window and listen and smell the weather. Maybe they should observe the animals and birds. Maybe they should use commonsense! Os course we are sorry that so many people lost their lives. Maybe when we can believe the forecasts again, we will take their advice. Wanda's Restaurant has a great deal for anyone buying a Walkerton cup. Buy a cup from her and the first cup of coffee is free. I don’t know what I’m going to do with all my cups. What one has to do these days to get a free cup of coffee. She’s also serving SOS again. I’m going South again this week. It’s Fifth District day at the State House. We’re hopping a bus and spending the day with our Senators and Representatives. I’ve already been told to mention our traffic light or lack of a stop light on 23 South. I’ll have more about this excursion next week.
