FALCONS RACE PAST VIKINGS IN SEASON FINALE The John Glenn Falcons ended their 1992-1993 regular season on a big winning note Friday night as they hosted the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings on Parent-Senior Night. A 96-77 victory for Glenn pushed their record to a very fine 18-3 for the year which included another BiCounty Championship and second place in the Northern State Conference after dropping a thriller to the Bremen Lions that cost them the title. With Sectional play in the immediate future, the charges of Gordon Mosson have their sights on another 20 win season and sectional title but will have their work cut out for them with Bremen their first opponent and then the Plymouth-La Ville winner waiting in the other bracket to pull an upset. The Falcons, all year long a team with only nine basic roster players, and were down to eight for much of the year due to an injury to senior Jay Cotton, wasted little time in establishing their superiority over the Vikings again in this game. A 22-11 lead was gained in the opening period as Russell Burch, one of four seniors making their last home appearance for Glenn, paced the early way with four baskets. Senior Aaron Casteel had five more of the first quarter points on a three-point basket and two free throws and another senior, Brian Perry, netted two baskets in this opening stanza. Jay Cotton was the other senior, given a start by coach Mosson in this finale. By halftime, the Falcons had maintained their 11 point lead as they led 37-26. A big 27 points third quarter that featured six three-point baskets by the sharp-shooting Falcons, just pushed the lead to the point where the Vikings were no longer hanging in position to make a serious run. Toby Gardner drilled three of the treys along with two other baskets for 13 third period points while Casteel also pegged in three from outside the three-point arc. The lead was stretched to 20 points, 64-44, at the end of three. The last quarter was any fan who likes offense fancy as the two teams combined for 65 points in this eight minute period. A lot of the scoring, especially for Glenn, was from the free throw line as the Falcons attempted no less than 23 freebees in this quarter. The Vikings poured in 33 points to the Falcons 32 in end to end to free throw line action that set the final score at 96-77. Gardner led all scorers with 32 points in this game on 14 baskets, three of them for three points. He had great support with Jayson Kincaid adding 21 on six baskets and a perfect eight of eight from the line, Casteel 16, going four from three point range and four of four from the stripe, and Burch was also in double figures with 13. The visitors were led by Finney, with 21, Bowers, 17, Cox 12. and Dunnuck with 11. “Cottage” Owners Sue To Collect Loses Os 1992 Fire Harvest Glen Inc., doing business as The Cottage, and the owners, Lawrence J. and Karen L. Schuller, through their attornies, have sued Monroe Guaranty Insurance Co.; the Laven Insurance Agency, Inc., South Bend; and agent Stephen D. Webster, in a case filed in the Mishawaka Division of St. Joseph Superior Court. Alleged is that Monroe has failed to pay benefits to Harvest Glen Inc. for the loss of building, contents and business income after a fire in March of last year, destroyed The Cottage Restaurant. The complaint alleges that Monroe has intentionally and maliciously refused to fulfill their obligations under the insurance contract. The Schullers are seeking an unspecified amount of damages from Monroe to compensate them for their loss as well as for punitive damages. They claim they have been without a source of livelihood since the fire and that at least two restaurant businesses have opened in Walkerton since the fire, creating competition to The Cottage when it is able to reopen. The insurance company denies the claim the restaurant was totally destroyed by fire and denies that it has intentionally and maliciously refused to fulfil! its contractual obligations. Monroe states it has not paid business interruption benefits because no loss has been established. They state the Schullers have failed to satisfy conditions imposed by the insurance policy and so have waived their right to recover. The Schullers claim that all premiums had been paid when the fire occurred which included insuring building and contents from loss by fire, theft and other casualties at replacement value, plus additional loss of business coverage. Falcons Meet Bremen In Key Sectional Game The John Glenn Falcons will open their 1993 state tourney drive Friday night as they square off in the first semi-final game against the Bremen Lions. These two teams, co-favorites and so far this season about as close as two teams can get with each other, drew the bye bracket but found themselves playing each other as they both attempt to regain the title of sectional champion, which Plymouth wore last year. Bremen and Glenn have been the dominate teams in this area for several years, except for Plymouth's slipping through last year when they went on to the Warsaw Regional. Also waiting to try and make the championship game are the host Pilgrims, of Plymouth, a Tuesday winner over Culver Community, and the LaVille Lancers, a victor over the Oregon-Davis Bobcats on Tuesday night. Either of these two teams have the capabilities to pull that surprise, especially if the winner of the Glenn and Bremen contest on Friday has any kind of a letdown. Game time Friday is 6:00 p.m. The Falcons defeated Bremen in the final game of the Bi-County to earn that title in late January, but a week later, in the Glenn gym, the Lions came back with an overtime victory over Glenn to claim the Northern State Conference title. It looks to be a very hotly contested ballgame, but who knows what will develop in high school basketball. The Plymouth Sectional winner this year will have a little longer trip to take come Saturday, March 13. The Regional action will be at the Huntington North gym, in Huntington, as they apparently are going to be rotating the regional site between Huntington and Warsaw. Since the realignment of the sectonals last year where no tourney has more than six teams, much different alignments had to follow in the heavily populated northern part of the state. This took both the Plymouth and Warsaw winners out of the Elkhart Regional, where they have been going for years. The championship game at the Plymouth site will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. Both Friday and Saturday, especially Friday night, should be a packed house as some good Hoosier basketball is anticipated in this year's sectional tourney. Tickets are all reserved and sold only at the door now after the tourney season ticket sale ended. They must be purchased the night that the contests are played and will be a valuable item Friday night in particular. Winter Sports Awards Night Thurs., March 11 On Thursday. March 11. at 6:30 p.m., John Glenn High School will be holding their annual Winter Sports Awards Night in the high school cafeteria. A dessert bar will be featured. Each family is asked to bring a dessert and their own table service. The beverages will be provided. After the refreshments, the presentation of awards will be made by the Winter coaches.

The programs are sponsored by the counselors of each high school. All begin at 7:00 p.m. “Gearing Up For College” is a program which provides high school juniors and their parents with information on one of the options students have after high school graduation. The program promotes early college planning to help students simplify the challenging process of getting admitted to college. A time for questions and concerns of students and parents will be provided. "Many times parents worry about the costs of college and wonder if their student's grades are high enough for college admission,” says Terry L. Taylor. "High school juniors are concerned about how and when to choose a college, when to apply for admission and should they visit college campuses.” Terry L. Taylor will be presenting the programs. He has been a professional admissions counselor since 1976. and he has worked at the University of Indianapolis. Adrian College and The Defiance College. He is a member of the "Planning For College” Speakers Bureau, coordinated by the Ohio ACT Office and he has presented this program to more than 5,000 people in the three states during the past five years. "The program will cover taking the SAT or ACT, the reasons for attending college, how to choose a college, what to do when visiting a college campus, when to visit college campuses, when to apply for admission, what colleges look for from applying students and financing a college education,” says Taylor. "Handouts will be given to all participants, and a number of visual aids will be used during the program." Come and join other students and parents as they learn of the college planning process The program is free and open to the public.
