Happiness Was SIX WEEKS IN FLORIDDA WITH ROY & PAULINE MCFARLAND AND BILL & RUTH BAUMAN THANK YOU YOU ARE ALL SPECIAL FRIENDS Love You, DOROTHY IUSB SPRING ENROLLMENT SETS RECORD Unofficial spring semester enrollment figures at Indiana Univer sity South Bend set records both in number of students enrolled and credit hours taken. According to preliminary figures released by IUSB officials, a total of 7,607 students registered for classes this semester. There are 7,348 students in IU programs, which is 2.6 percent more than the spring of 1992, and credit hours total 60,277, up 4.5 percent from last year. Enrollment in lUSB’s Purdue Statewide Technology programs also increased. Unofficial figures put enrollment at 259, which is 18.3 percent more than last spring. Pu due credit hours total 1,492, or 12 percent higher than last year. IUSB registrar Kent Laudeman attributes the increase primarily to lUSB’s affordability at a time when college costs are very high and still on the rise. “I also believe the community is more aware of our academic excellence, of the quality of the faculty and caliber and variety of the programs,” he added. The number of graduate students pursuing degree programs continues to reflect a trend that began three years ago when the state discontinued requirements for public school teachers to pursue a master’s degree. Graduate enrollment this semester totals 844, a decrease of 8.9 percent from the previous year. Another trend is toward more full-time attendance. While parttime students continue to be the majority at IUSB, significantly more students are choosing to attend full-time. IUSB sophomores and seniors, in particular, recorded impressive increases in full-time enrollment this semester. The number of IUSB sophomores attending classes full-time jumped 22.5 percent from last spring, which Laudeman attributes to a greater number of students deciding to continue their education here instead of out-of-town. As for a 7 percent increase in the number of seniors attending fulltime, Laudeman speculates that the reason is a desire to finish the degree and enter the workforce. “I think when you get that dose to earning a degree, it’s a strong motivation to devote time to reaching your goal more quickly,” he said.
