LADY FALCONS ELIMINATED IN SECTIONAL ACTION For the second straight year the John Glenn Lady Falcons were eliminated 44-37 from the girls IHSAA Sectional Basketall Tournament by South Bend Washington in Thursday night action at LaVille’s Dale Cox gym. In the second semi-final game on the evening, La Ville rolled past Plymouth 44-18 to set up a title rematch between Washington and LaVille. Washington stunned tournament favorite 46-39 to capture its second straight sectional championship Saturday night. Washington, 12-8, will meet Elkhart Memorial in the Elkhart Regional Saturday. LaVille ends with a fine 19-5 mark. The Glenn-Washington game was closely contested throughout as the Panther's final margin of victory was the largest lead by either team. The winners half court trap defense caused the locals problems all night, with many turnovers off the trap usually resulting in easy Panther buckets which really proved to be the difference. In all,the Falcons were forced into 31 turnovers while Washington had 17 miscues. The South Bend girls held a slim 10-8 lead at the end of the first period before Glenn went on a 6-0 run to lead 14-10 early in the second stanza. The Panthers roared back to regain the lead at 17-16 md never trailed again as they led 21-20 at the intermission. The Falcolns trailed 32-27 at the start of the final quarter but dosed to 32-30 on a three-pointer by Renee Fisher. Washington was followed by a 6-0 spurt by Glenn with Tami Lidgard leading the attack. The Panthers then went to a delay game forcing the locals to abandon their 2-3 zone defense. Washington proved to be too quick for the Falcons as they pulled away in the last minute to advance to the championship game. Falcon coach Scott Hostetler admitted that the Panther defensive pressure gave his young team fits all night, particularly in the fourth period when his charges turned the ball over 10 times. From the field, the Falcons hit on 13 of 36 tries for 36 percent and Washington dropped in 20 of 59 shots for 34 pecent. At the charity stripe the locals drilled 10 or 15 attempts while the Panthers managed only 3 of 10 attempts. Sophomore Tracey Legge tallied 14 points to pace the Falcon attack. Tiffany Boatman, Zayed Henry and Tasha Reed each netted 10 points for Washington. The Falcons closed out their 1992-93 season with a much improved 8-12 record. The eight wins are the most wins in a season for a local quintet since the 1985-86 season. Washington improved to 11-8.
