VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “It’s Time For A Change” As the tempo of the campaigns for the offices of United States President, Senator and Representative picks up and occupies most of the media attention, the local political races tend to be ignored. These races are just as important to us, the taxpayers, as are the national contests. It may be that they are more critical to our well being or even our lives. A case in point is the actions of two of our County officials, members of the County Commissioners and the County Council. The unconscionable mess existing at the Commissioner level, where a video tape is alledged to be lost or found, depending upon which day you make your inquiry, or to whom you may address your questions! Can Mr. Jasinski, in good conscience, ask to be re-elected, when he can’t keep track of a video tape? Can we trust him to administer millions of our tax dollars, prudently, wisely and provide proper accounting of the same? Also, taxpayers and voters of the Walkerton community, and all county voters, for that matter, this man was part of another action that diminishes his stature as a public servant, interested in your personal well being and life! Here, in some detail, are facts and figures that substantiate these observations. He, along with Mr. Dennis R. Shafer, County Council member, is asking for your vote in the upJOHNSON INS. coming election. Voters and taxpayers may I refresh your memory, as mine is each month when 1 receive my telephone bill? According to the bill, I’m charged for E9ll service, which we do not have in Walkerton! (And we never were given the opportunity to vote for or against this service!) Mr. Jasinski and Mr. Shafer, both agreed that a $30,000 E9ll terminal was not needed at Walkerton. They did agree that the rest of the County should have E9ll service and funded the purchase of the equipment to provide the service. They appropriated only money enough for a printer in our dispatcher’s office, so that Walkerton community emergencies must be re-dis-patched before emergency equipment can be on its way. Approximately S3OO was all they could provide! The additional “dispatching time” of 3-4 minutes could be the difference of life and death to your loved ones or you yourself! Consider well, this penurious action on their part, when measured against Mr. Shafer’s published statements in the April 24, 1992 South Bend Tribune. In that publication, Mr. Shafer revealed that from year to year, the County had funds unspent and uncommitted, carried forward each year. (This came out when funding of Project Future was threatened by budgetary restraints.) Mr. Shafer provided stats that alledged the County had unused funds totaling $607,000 in 1990 and $1.2 million in 1991! He also presented figures showing in excess of $115,000 in the maintenance budget for those two years that was carried forward each year, unused! (That is money that we taxpayers paid over and above what was really needed!) However, our County Commissioners and our County Council members indicated that $30,000 was not available to provide E9ll service to Walkerton! It seems we don’t deserve or need critical emergency services! By their actions, their obvious contempt of our community and its citizenry, they have said our votes don’t count! Let’s all get our and
vote. Vote these incumbents out! We need a change! Roman Brehm, Taxpayer 1159 Lake S.R. 23 Walkerton, Indiana 46574 “An Honor’* On Thursday of last week, I was pleased to attend a dinner in North Liberty with the Lions Organization. This local club has 44 members, and the majority of them were present. It was a privilege to be present for the induction of a new Lion. This International Organization helps many groups from eyeglasses to cancer research. Over the next few weeks, 1 will be mentioning the many projects that are involved. This group of North Liberty and former Walkerton Lions is growing and a very active club, thanks mainly to Craig Parmley and his active committee. When Fred Bullinger asked me to attend, he said that I could pay for my dinner by giving the Lions a plug. I replied that this was a very easy request. As I like to talk, and writing is just talking on paper. Over the next few weeks you will find out more about the North Liberty Lions, than you probably want to know. Thank you Mr. Parmley and Lions for a very pleasant and enlightening evening! Thursday is the big day for Wanda’s. The grand opening will be held with many fine food items and gifts. The grand prize is a TV. Other gifts are free breakfasts and dinners. She may even be serving raspberry pie. So go on out to Wanda's Food and Gas Stop for a fun time. My garden didn't know that it frosted and is still turning out tomatoes. lam really enjoying the turnips and carrots. It is really great just to go out to the garden and pick what is needed. It has been a great year for vegetables. Now all we need is a good snow storm, so that we can eat up all of my food that we processed. The leaves are turning into a great color show. So enjoy befdrt you have to get rid of them. Sincerely, Nedra Williams “Dog Barking Complaint” At 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening, October 5, officer Kelly Bussie came to my house with a complaint from a town official of the Town of North Liberty Board of Trustees, to have me shut up my dog that it was barking too much. The funny part is that my dog barks no more now than she did a year ago. My dog is out there to be a watch dog. She only barks when there is someone or something out there that should not be there to begin with! Then it varies to how long or how mean her bark is depending on what they are up to. When they were out in the alley on Monday, August 17, 1992 at 11:00. p.m. (town officials) looking around with flashlights behind Mrs. Hay’s house trying to find surveyor pegs or whatever else they could find to mess up, then the dog was barking furiously for half an hour. I had to go out to see what was going on. Why didn’t the town official call me if he had a complaint about my dog barking instead of the North Liberty Police. The reason is because I told Officer Burch that a town official's dog gets in the trash bags and scatters the trash all over and its not just mine! Wake up North Liberty.
