Restaurant, in South Bend. Those present were Ruth Clark, Betty Michaels, Vera Krueger, Bertie Bulka, Marie Howell, Virginia Ames, Marge Stull, Martha Cark, Norma Hocker and Gladys Sheneman. Some still work and were not able to attend. We really enjoyed reminising about the fun we use to have working together and we may get together once a year from now on. Sorry to report that Joan Baughman, wife of Ralph Baughman, who live in Lakeville, suffered a stroke on the way home from California, where they had visited the past month, and is now a patient in the Michiana Hospital, in South Bend. Please remember her, as she is our good cook for retired neighbors and friends the first Tuesday of every month and we need her. Remember Ruby Salyer’s quilt show on September 24, 25 and 26 at the Teegarden U.B. Church. There will be eats, a quilt to quilt and a tent set up outside where they will be collecting clothing, canned goods, toys useful things for the Hurricane victims in Florida and Louisiana. So don’t forget and come see all the beautiful quilts. Gene and Norma Patrick, who own and operate the Sunoco Service Station at Indiana 4 and State Road 23, downtown North Liberty, are happy to announce that they have been in business for the past 25 years and would like to thank all their customers and friends who have helped make it possible. Best wishes from all your friends and congratulations. Gene and Norma.
How many can remember back in June 1937 when the oil station, repair shop, cars and school buses burned on a Sunday morning when fire destroyed the large brick building owned and operated by Paul Bare and Clarence Heim? Three school buses were burned and Joe Steele’s trustees office. Loss was estimated at $25,000. Other losses were equipment, parts and tires with a loss of $7,000. Insurance was $3,000. Raymond Newcomber operated an auto electric service in the rear of the building and his loss was estimated at $1,500. The fire spread next door where J.D. O’Connor conducted an electrical service for refrigerators, ironers, and other equipment. He had smoke and water damage. This building was first owned and built by T.H. Caroil at a cost of $12,000. It was located where Gene’s Sunoco Station is today. Gene’s station was destroyed by fire on Sunday afternoon, July 13, 1980. I will never forget that fire. Norma and Gene had taken me to South Bend for my birthday and when we drove back into North Liberty the station was all on fire. What a mess that was to dean up. Would you believe, Goldie Skinner celebrated her 88th birthday Sunday, September 13. She was a dinner guest of Leigh Roy and Mary Hahn along with her daughter, Viola Barden. She received a lot of birthday cards and calls from her many friends. Happy birthday, Goldie. I am happy to report that the North Liberty Treasure Chest donated $1,000.00 to the Hurricane

Andrew Relief Fund. I hope you all appreciate this store as much as 1 do. I have found a lot of treasures there and we all need to support it as it is an asset to our town. Our retired neighbors and friends who get together the first Tuesday of every month at Pine Creek Church, will be happy to learn that they will be sharing in giving $300.00 to the Emergency Disaster Fund, as there is so much need in our world today. Our sympathy goes to the family of Lucille Lutz who passed away
