FALCONS TOP KNOX 20-8 IN DEFENSIVE GAME The John Glenn Falcons won a hard hitting game with Knox to re- I cord their first victory of the season and first under new coach Dan Drotar. With the defense holding the Redskins pretty well in check, the offense took advantage of real good field position twice in the second quarter to gain a 13-0 halftime lead and then hold on for the 20-8 victory. Glenn Statistics Knox 10 Statistics 6 135 Rushing 61 57 Passing 120 9 Passes Attempted 15 3 Passes Completed 6 0 Had Intercepted 1 Punts 5 33 Average Yards 34 4 Fumbles 2 0 Fumbles Lost 2 100 Yards Penalized 35 The game opened on a strong defensive note by both teams. Neither team could sustain a drive and threaten the other as the Falcons were able to register just two first downs to Knox's one. The second period found Glenn * getting possession early in the period on the Knox 36 yard line and quarterback Pat Speckhart hit Jason Bare with a 28 yard scoring pass a couple of plays later. The extra point was missed, but the Falcons had scored their first points of the season and led in the game 6-0 with 9:48 left in the half. A Knox fumble was covered by the Falcons and they went back on offense again on the Redskins 40 yard line. This time it took a little longer, but a key third down pass reception from Speckhart to Jason Fisher sustained the drive and Speckhart later capped it with a three year run for the score. This time Brian Perry’s kick was true and the Falcons led 13-0 with 5:43 still left in the half. Nothing of consequence happened in the final five and a half minutes and the Falcons enjoyed their lead at the main intermission. The third quarter was more like the first, with possession going back and forth with neither team gaining much momentum. A fine punt return by Jason Groves of 33 yards put the Falcons back in good field position heading into the final stanza. As they drove towards the goal line, the Knox defense tightened and forced the Falcons to try a field goal. On the attempt, the snap was fumbled and Jason Groves picked up the ball, scrambled around and then found Jason Fisher in the end zone for a touchdown. Perry’s kick was good and the Falcons had taken advantage of another situation to take a 20-0 lead. Knox managed to avert a shutout with a touchdown late in the game. J. R. Geller hit Andy Fox with a 55 yard pass and run play and they followed with a two point conversion to make the final score 20-8. The touchdown came with only 1:11 left in the contest. The defense was the key in this game and hard hitting and solid football on the defensive line was responsible for the victory. The Scoring JOHN GLENN: Jason Bare, 28
