AWARDS AMONG NATION’S TOP YOUTH ACTIVTIES The America’s Young Woman of the Year program, outgrowth of a floral extravaganza in Mobile, Ala., begins it fourth decade firmly established as one of the nation’s prime youth activities. Known as the America’s Junior Miss program for three decades before its name was updated to America's Young Woman of the Year Awards in 1989, it was launched by the Mobile Jaycees in 1958, prompted by the success of the Mobile Azalea Trail Festival and the desire to spotlight the achievements of young people. Walkerton’s Epsilon Chi Chapter of Tri Kappa will be sponsoring the local scholarship program. Objectives at all levels are: to recognize, reward and encourage excellence in young women and to provide a means through which young people can communicate their hopes and opinions.
This year s competition, as in all the programs that preceded it, will also give thousands of young women the opportunity to continue tbeir education at the college of their choice. Overall awards list — scholarships, cash, bonds and merchandise offered to contestants at the national, state and local levels — is expected to exceed $3.9 million this year. Since its beginning, America’s Young Woman of the Year has achieved a distinguished position among youth programs in the country, attracting thousands of high school seniors to compete on the local level. Its success and growth have been attributed to its objectives, its appropriateness to the times, and to the dedication and efforts of 30,000 volunteers throughout the country. The program is geared for and around youth, to recognize and assist the young women who participate by giving them the opportunity to express themselves an to broaden their skills and personalities. It emphasizes the positive and stresses the overall growth and development of the

young women, accenting in judging the importance of character, personality, intelligence, participation in worthy activities, creativity, talent and general appearance. The young women who participate find the program is a dream in reality: exciting days of new friends, busy rehearsals, panel evaluation, performing before a huge audience and the opportunity to win valuable scholarship awards. The Walkerton Young Woman of the Year Scholarship Program is open to any senior girls attending LaVille High School, Oregon-Davis High School and John Glenn High School interested in obtaining scholarship funds for further education. Walkerton will be hosting their 21st annual program on November 5 and November 7 in the John Glenn High School auditorium. MORRIS CEMETERY ASSOCIATION TO MEET The Morris Cemetery Association will hold a meeting Thursday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Teegarden First Brethren Church.
