THE NEW AUDIO-VISUAL AREA AT THE COUNTY LIBRARY The St. Joseph County Public Library is extremely proud of the new Audio-Visual Information and References Services Area at the Main Library. This area houses a great variety of materials and services for the public. Everything from art prints to videos is available for check out by patrons. A selection of framed prints of famous paintings and drawings is mounted on the walls of the A-V area so patrons can see each one clearly. Most patrons do not realize that these may be checked out for 6 weeks. This service is available for new offices and homes until final art is selected. Art prints are only available at the Main Library. Also found in the A-V area are six new “Discovery Stations”. These stations consist of three IBM and three Macintosh computers with laser printers for public use. Software is available for use at the stations. Staff assistance is available on a limited basis but patrons are expected to know the basic computer skills. The cost for use of a computer is $.50 per each 15 minutes. The Audio-Visual Information and Reference Services Area naturally contains the more traditional videos, audio cassettes and compact disks. These are also available in more limited numbers at each branch. While some records are still available, they are rapidly being replaced by CD’s. The Library has over 8,000 CD’s in all fields from classical music to comedy. There are also books on tape in both fiction and non-fiction. As many as 15 cassettes and 15 CD’s may be checked out at one time. In place of films, which were subject to brittleness, breakage and fading, videos have come to the forefront. The Library features
