NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Sheneman Over 150 relatives and friends called Sunday afternoon at the Cbmmunity Building in North Liberty to congratulate Eldon and Gloria Gark, who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children, Larry Gark, of Fort Wayne, and their daughter, Reva Noll, of Goshen, hosted the party. They received lots of beautiful ca^ds, gifts and telephone calls. Guests were present from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indianapolis, Elkhart, Plymouth, Bremen, LaPaz, Walkerton and North Liberty. Alisa DePappe, of San Antonio, Tdxas, who is a nurse in the Navy, was a luncheon guest of Pauline Powers on Monday. Sixteen senior citizens of the Church of Christ enjoyed dinner together Sunday after the church service at Al’s Restaurant, at Koontz Lake. Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., there will be a concert at the Peppermint Hill Shelter. Take a lawn chair and enjoy folk, jazzy, bluegrass and rock with three part harmony. I just read in Mrs. Johnson’s news of 100 years ago, where they went to South Bend to market their eggs and butter. They only got 17 cents a dozen for eggs and 18 cents for butter. I sure would like to have some of that good oldd churned butter, wouldn’t you? Dwight and Carolyn Thompson, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Tyner, are here visiting relatives and friends. Her sister Do and her husband, of Chicago, attended church with them at the Tyner United Methodist Chruch and then enjoyed the fellowship dinner prepared by their new minister. To the taxpayers of North Liberty, there is to be a special meeting at the Town Hall on August 17 at 7:00 p.m. to conduct a hearing on the budget. Please read the article in August 6th paper on it by Paul Williams, Jr., clerk treasurer. We out here in the west side of North Liberty need to be there so mark it down on your calendar, because we have the highest tax rate in the county so I have learned. Several birthdays were celebrated in the North Liberty Park Saturday with a pot luck dinner. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Gardner and sons, of Oxford, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Davis, of Plymouth; Annabelle Miller

and daughters Rosalee Williams and Marsha Roberts, also of Plymouth; Sherry Mann and daughter Katy and son Perry, of Bremen; Jack and Shirley Norris and daughter Jackie, of South Bend; and Lola Pavey, of North Liberty. Contests were enjoyed and then later birthday cake and ice cream was enjoyed by all. Shirley Norris baked and decorated two lovely cakes. They reported that they had such a wonderful day together in our beautiful North Liberty Park. Please remeber Vesta DeCoudres, who is a patient in Memorial Hospital, after suffering a severe stroke. Also remember Mary Louise Sheneman, who suffered a setback last week and needs our prayers. The North Liberty graduating Gass of 1977 had a class reunion on Saturday at Holy Family and enjoyed dinner together. On Sunday they had a picnic in the North Liberty Park for all the families. Teresa (Singleton) Kaley, of Florida, came the farthest to attend. Plan now to attend the Potato Creek Festival Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lots of things to see and do have been planned for all ages. Well, as you all know, its Fair time and my how I used to like to go to all the fairs around, but no more. I just read in the Sheneman Genoogy where Will Sheneman, son of David Sheneman, attended the World’s Fair in Chicago, back in Septebmer 1893. I wonder when it started? I remember going to the World’s Fair in Chicago back in 1933. I was 18 and I went on a school bus load with Cy Sarber of Tyner, as our bus driver. That was really a fun day back then. Verda Karn, of Tyner, called me to tell my Tyner still does have a postoffice, located in Sam Haag’s house he built across from Dr. Thompson’s old house. This was news to me. She also informed me that after reading my article about the currants, she decided to make some currant jelly and said its the best she ever made and she made me a jar also. So boy am I glad 1 wrote that article as I just got a jar from Iva Gark and now from Verda. Anybody else make currant jelly? Thanks girls, I really appreciate you thinking of me. August 16th the Lakeville Christian Church with their pastor Roy Herbster will be in charge of the 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning church service out at Peppermint Hill Shelter, Potato Creek State Park. You are welcome. Nell Patrick, of Walkerton, Phil Patrick and son, Jeff, of North Liberty and Bob and Joan Boyd, of
Columbus, Ohio, was dinner guests Friday evening of Skeet and Carol Buettner and family in LaPorte. Received a call from Fay Mangus that she had received a letter from Florence Lewis, of Montrose, Michigan, wanting information about the Esther Harmon family. Ido remember Esther. She had three daughters, Faith, Wilma and Avis. If anyone knows their where abouts, please contact Fay Mangus. David and Nancy Neilsen and son, Eric John, of Indianapolis, have been visiting Fay Mangus for the past few days. Callers Thursday afternoon of Sheneman were Mildred Gorins, Marie White, Heddy Horvath, Gertrude Pinter, all of South Bend; Ruth Gark, Bertie Bulla Norma Hocker, Virginia Rose and Marie Howell. They came to see her beautiful Flower Garden quilt that she had just finished for Alta Andrews. Also to see a beautiful handerchief quilt that I have to get quilted for a lovely wedding gift, along with several others ready to quilt. Refreshments of homemade cookies and iced tea were served before they returned home.

Stump, of Garrett, Indiana. Several were having August birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Evelyn Dolph gave the secretary’s report after which Gladys Sheneman, president, told a funny joke, along with the pastor, as we had to wait until the Kentucky Fried chicken got there. When it arrived, he gave the noon prayer after which the ladies served a delicious dinner. All then went to the sanctuary where we were entertained by Florence Seekings and Verl Haag. They sang the old songs which really brought back memories so all in all, it was a day to remember.
