PEARL ALDRICH WORKS AS RED CROSS VOLUNTEER IN KENDALLVILLE Pearl Aldrich spent a week in Kendallville working as a Red Cross volunteer followoing the devastating tornadoes that touched down July 14. Hardest hit were the Arvada Hills subdivision, several blocks along the Main Street business district and near Sylvan Lake at Rome City. Mrs. Aldrich says of her experiences there: "I saw the damage wreaked by the tornadoes several days after clean-up efforts were underway. Like everyone who saw the effects of the storms, I marveled that there were so few serious injuries. The storms hit in mid-afternoon while most adults were at work and homes were unoccupied. The county fair had “bracelet day" and many of the community children were enjoying the rides. It appeared that touchdown of one funnel could be measured in mere yards of the fairgrounds. After hitting a shopping plaza and skimming over a nursing home, the twister crossed the road and devastated a subdivision of nearlynew homes. “DDuring 30 months with Red Cross Disaster Relief Services, I had not previously worked in a tornade area. With most floods there is time to protect possessions and prepare for evacuation. Within minutes of a tornado, shattered hopes and dreams lay among broken possessions spread across forty acres. “I have never worked in an area where the community so quickly organized for recovery. The generosity, concern and willingness to lend a hand shown by Individuals, organizations and churches made me proud to be a Hoosier. The landscape will be scarred for a few years and time will be reckoned from July 14, 1992 for decades. But recovery for Kendallville will come much sooner, for the spirit of the people is not shattered, and hopes and dreams can be mended along with possessions and homes.’’
