DNR Announces Bonus Counties For Deer Season Hunters who would like to take an anterless deer this November in one of Indiana’s 76 bonus counties stand a good chance of being drawn for a permit, according to Patrick R. Ralston, director of the Department of Natural Resources. A total of 110,900 anterless deer permits will be available during the 1992 firearms season, about 9 percent less than last year’s quota of 122,100 permits. The large number of permits is intended to reduce or stabilize the deer herd in counties where crop damage or deer-vehicle accidents have become a concern. “The DNR’s goal is to maintain good deer hunting and viewing opportunities while minimizing crop damage and accidents,’’ Ralston said. Hunters wanting to take an antlerless deer should apply for an anterless permit for the bonus county of their choice. Successful applicants are drawn by computer selection, and hunters must then purchase a bonus county deer license. Hunters are also encouraged to list a second choice on their application card in case they are not selected for their first choice. To apply for an anterless permit, hunters must purchase a firearms deer license during July or August and complete the application card included with the license. Applications must be received at the DNR’s Bloomington office by Auust 21. A computerized drawing will allocate the anterless permits, and all hunters will be notified by mail regardless of their success by October 1. DNR personnel report that must hunters who apply for an anterless deer permit this year will be drawn, due to the large number of permits available. However, sportsmen who want to increase their chances of being drawn should apply in counties in which the number of applicants is expected to be less than the number of permits available. Do you have any suggestions for low-cholesterol pie crust? E.D., Pasco, WA. A. Yes, we do. You can make delicious pie crusts for unbaked fillings with either graham cracker crumbs or with baked meringue. Using graham crackers, you can either mix them with melted margarine or simply sprinkle them in the pie plate, before adding filling. A meringue must be baked to a hard shell and will taste best and hold its light, airy quality if filled and eaten the day it’s made. Q. What’s the best way to store lettuce and celery? How long with they keep? N.8.W., Duluth, MN. A. Lettuce keeps three to five days; celery for about a week. Wash and blot dry the leaves or head of lettuce and store in a lettuce crisper. Store celery either washed or unwashed in a crisper or plastic bag. Q. Can 1 use Mexican vanilla that’s two years old, but has never been opened? 8.W., Baton

a

Rouge, LA. A. The best vanilla used to come from Mexico, however, some Mexican vanilla is unsafe because it contains coumarin, a toxic substance that can cause liver and kidney damage and is banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Because there’s no way to tell which vanilla has coumarin, it’s best to buy vanilla in the U.S. that meets FDA standards. Vanilla extract can be kept for about four years if it’s stored tightly closed. Do you have a cooking question? Write Dear Betty Crocker, Box 1113, Dept. Betty, Minneapolis, MN 55440. TIP OF THE WEEK: The longer a food will be on the grill, the more charcoal you’ll need. Use 20 to 30 briquets when grilling hamburgers for four to six people. For roasts, whole fish or poultry, start with 40 to 50 briquets or enough to make a solid bed of coals. Add 10 additional coals every hour. CONSUMER REPORT If you are concerned about the safety of your drinking water don’t let an unscrupulous company talk you into buying high-priced worthless equipment to calm your fears. Attorney General Linley Pearson says many of the door-to-door sellers of water purifiers are not armed with the truth about safe drinking water. Instead, they use scare tactics and high pressure sales methods to convince Hoosiers to buy unnecessary water purification products. "If you live in a city or town with a water system, rest assured that your water is tested nearly every day to make certain it meets state and federal standards,’’ Pearson says. "By state and federal law, public water supplies must be tested on a regular basis. If there are water impurities, the water treatment plant takes immediate action to correct the problems." If you live in a rural area and your water comes from a well, you will want to have your water tested for impurities. County health departments perform this service. "Many people are concerned about the safety of their water supply. That concern should not, however, lead to hasty decisions to purchase products that probably will not perform as promised," Pearson says. "In Indiana, consumer are protected by a law that allows them to cancel a contract in three business days if they are solicited in their homes," Pearson says. "That means if someone comes to your home and tries to sell you a product, and you decide to buy it, you can cancel the contract and obtain a refund within three business days," Pearson explains. Pearson says consumers should be aware that many salesmen will use high pressure sales tactics to make a sale. "If you are told by a salesman that an offer for a product is ’good today only’ or is a ‘once in a lifetime offer,’ that should set off an alarm telling you not to fall for the sales pitch,” Pearson says. "Many times salesmen will use those tactics to make a sale, but as a consumer you need to know that those statements could be misleading. If you are told the price of a certain item is good for one day only, that is more than likely bait to get you to purchase the product," Pearson says. JOHNSON INS. AGENCY DON R. Scare tactics including presentations of polluted water are also used to make sales, Pearson says. "If you are concerned about what a salesman tells you, call the water treatment plant in your area to determine the validity of the statements,” Pearson says. Many salesmen on the door-to-door circuit offer bonus prizes or gifts for participating in a sales promotion or for placing an early order.
