VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “Fourth Os July Program” As a member of the Friends of the Fourth, I would like to thank Randy Givens for his recent letter concerning the July 4th celebration at the park. We enjoy hearing that our efforts are appreciated. As a small committee, we are proud that Walkerton can have such a nice celebration each year. And the residents of Walkerton should be proud that people come from all over the area to attend this celebration. Randy, I do not know where you got the figures you quoted in your letter, but as much as I wish they were accurate, they are not. Each year we pay between $5,500 and $6,000 for the fireworks, plus we must cover the costs of entertainment during the day, security, prizes, advertising and other miscellaneous items. We receive 20% of what the carnival takes in, which was approximately $3,000 this year. The costs would be much higher if not for the numerous volunteers, like Len Northam and his crew, and the Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department, who work hard each year to present such spectacular fireworks displays. Another expense next year will be decorations for our stage at the park. The rain destroyed most of our paper decorations, so they must be replaced. Most of the decorations are donated by members of the committee, but some must be purchased. We, the committee, work all year long to raise the required funds for the celebration. This year alone, we have had numerous fund raisers, such as the community birthday calendar, an auction, candy sales, raffles, road block, advertising place mats, plus our crowd collection and our booth at the park. All these fund raisers take a lot of time, plus the members of the committee invest a lot of their own money in these events (donating supplies, purchasing numerous raf-

fie tickets, bidding on items at our own auction, etc.). Also, we receive donations from the local merchants and businesses. We depend on the community to support our fund raisers. I appreciate you concerns about the carnival; they will be taken into consideration by the committee. We strive to make this event a family affair, and do not want our community to feel they are being taken advantage of. Wabash Valley Shows donate 20% of their income in Walkerton to the Friends. We have not found another carnival that will do that. I understand they do have nicer, larger rides, but are limited in Walkerton by the small area of the park. Perhaps, if we get our new park, we can have different rides. We appreciate hearing from you about the July 4 celebration, good or bad. We cannot correct problems if we do not know what they are. Thank you for taking your time to put your thoughts into a letter. Mary Ann Frame A Friend of the Fourth “On The News” Weil, Walkerton made it on the news again! All of the South Bend TV stations carried the town pickets last evening. I was sorry that I missed the meeting. It sounded very inspiring. It seems, to the pit bull owners, to be a hardship to carry a large amount of liability insurance for protection of anyone who might be injured by their pets. Maybe these people should be landowners in the country. Farmers carry a large amount of insurance to protect people, who come onto their property legally or illegally. If a farmer’s animal gets on the road and causes a wreck by a speeding car, he better have insurance, even though the fence may have been cut by a trespasser. Are these pit bulls used as guard dogs, or are they family pets? Has there been a problem with these dogs running loose? I really feel bad about missing this meeting. Maybe in two weeks I can attend and hear what is going on first hand.
My advice to Mr. Givens would be to join the Friends of the Fourth and bring his exceptional knowledge of carnival matters. His help would be greatly appreciated. The Wabash Valley Shows have been coming to Walkerton for many years. They also work on the Starke County Fair. This show could go to many other areas on the Fourth of July, but they and we are happy with Walkerton. They do a very good job of cleaning their area, and I have never seen a carnival that doesn’t have a few greasy people. We were very sorry about the mix-up in rates. As a whole the Fourth of July was well received. I missed the fireworks again. I was in my usual spot, a ticket booth. Leonard, you did another bang-up job. Thanks to all your merry firemen for a job well done! Have you been to Wanda’s Food and Gas Stop? I don’t know about that name Wanda. I understand that you are going to have red raspberry pie this week. If you haven’t been there yet, give it a try. You will like it! Good luck on your venture, Wanda and Bob. Don’t forget the sidewalk sale this week in Walkerton. Come on out and support those businesses that are still here. We do appreciate our local shops and try our best to patronize them. Sincerely, Nedra Williams ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP MEETING This month the Alzheimer’s Support Group will be traveling to LaPorte to attend a program on Alzheimer’s disease. The date is Tuesday, July 28, and the time is 1:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Heritage Place, 901 Lincolnway. Miller’s Merry Manor will provide transportation. The van will leave at 12:00 noon. This should be a most interesting program that will provide much information on the disease as well as discussing the concerns of family members and caregivers. Please phone Myrna Stull at 586-3133 to make arrangements for this trip.
