WALKERTON TOWN BOARD MEETING The Walkerton Town Board met in executive session at 6:00 p.m. on June 15, 1992 with the followoing members present: Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell,. Cheryl Rizek, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Attorney David Holmes and Gerk Treasurer Judy Hiler were also present. The Council discussed a personnel problem, as advertised, and did not discuss any other matters. The Council took no action and adjourned for the regular meeting. The regular Town Council meeting began at 7:15 p.m. on June 15, 1992 with the following members present: Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell, Cheryl Rizek, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Attorney Holmes and clerk-treasurer Judy Hiler were also present. The minutes were approved as read. Larry Dill was not present for his court report, but told Len Jaske that everything was fine. Monthly Reports: Rizek said that there have been a lot of questions about the paving that was done this summer, and asked superintendent Back to explain why the paving was done in strips. Back said that they thought they could do a third more streets by doing wedging. We added that the berms along the side were breaking up. Attorney Holmes is going to write to Pressure Concrete again to see if they are going to come to inspect the cracks in our water tank. Back reported that materials for updating the base of the traffic light will cost around $2,500.00. He has gone over the plans with someone from INDOT, and they would like a letter of intent to remove the traffic light at the eastern intersection of 6 and 23. The signal will probably be put on flashers for three months and then removed. Walt Heil asked what will happen if a business moves in where the elevator had been. Holmes said that INDOT will come down and do a traffic count for us, to see if a new signal is warranted. Holmes added that INDOT is more concerned with keeping the traffic moving, where we would like to slow it down. Len Jaske said that he will not vote for anything that will take out that traffic signal. Holmes reminded the Council that the signal at the western intersection of 6 and 23 has to be updated and improved, and one of the conditions for getting INDOTs help is that the other signal is taken out. A stop sign can be put on S.R. 23 at the easter intersection. Without INDOTs help, it would cost us approximately $30,000.00 to $40,000.00 to update the signals. Attorney Holmes said that when we make the concession of allowing the eastern signal to be taken out we are giving way to those who are experts in the field. Our signals are so old that superintendent Back is having trouble finding parts for repairs. Back said that he’s been ' lucky to get junk parts from signals ; that have been scrapped out. Gene Reese made the motion to allow Back to make arrangements for the new traffic signal at the western ’ (continued on Page 8) 1
