WALKERTON TOWN BOARD MEETING The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on June 1, 1992 with the following members present: Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell, Cheryl Rizek, Walter Heil and Leonard Jaske. Attorney David Holmes and clerk-treasurer Judy Hiler were also present. The minutes were approved as read. Jeff Baker brought in the Fire Department’s checking account statements, for the last 18 months, for the Council’s review. Rizek asked if this account had been audited, and Baker answered that it had not. Baker said that they do not have any certificates of deposit. Attorney Holmes said that he had learned, from the State Board of Accounts, that the Council does have to approve a rate schedule for billing. He added, that when a bill is sent, the Fire Department needs to include a copy of the report that goes to the State Fire Marshal. The following is the rate schedule that the Fire Department would like to adopt: structure fire — $250.00; grass fire — no charge; fuel spill, hazardous material incident or vehicle fire on a state of federal highway — $250.00 per fire truck plus $150.00 per hour. A public hearing needs to be held and a resolution passed to adopt the rates. Holmes recommendedd that the Council review and update their contract with Lincoln Township. A joint meeting consisting of the Council, the Lincoln Township Trustee and her Board will be set up around budget time to discuss the contract. Mike Wertenberger, an insurance consultant, asked for the Council’s authorization to go over the town’s current group health insurance coverage with the clerktreasurer. Len Jaske made the motion to do so. Seconded by Walt Heil. Carried. The monthly Police and Work Order reports were accepted. CITIZEN’S INPUT Betty King, Friends of the Fourth, asked for permission for street closings for the Kiddie Parade. Streets to be closed are: Georgia Street from the Presbyterian Church to Van Buren Street and Van Buren Street on into Urey Park. King also asked for permission to have roadblocks for collecting donations, on June 27th at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Michigan Street, the Ist Source/lst Choice parking lot and the corner by Ray & Kenny’s. Friends of the Fourth would also like to have Washington Street closed on the 4th of July in order to provide away for emergency vehicles to get in and out. Wabash Valley Shows will be here from June 30 through July 4, 1992. Walt Heil made the motion to allow all of the street closings and the roadblocks. Seconded by Len Jaske. Carried. Rizek thanked Mrs. King and all those who have worked, throughout the year, for everything they have done to make our 4th of July celebration possible. Angie Gennon said that she had gotten a letter from the assistant building commissioner asking them to remove an old car from their (continued on Page 12)

The Walkerton Community Choir will give the premiere performance of a new patriotic musical, “America, United”, written by Sherry Klinedinst, on Sunday, July 5, at John Glenn High School, Walkerton, at 7:30 p.m. The choir was formed in 1976 for a special Bicentennial performance and, since then, has continued to give concerts on a regular basis. The members are from Walkerton, North Liberty, Lakeville, Plymouth, Koontz Lake, Hamlet, Bremen, Grovertown and South Bend. Sherry Klinedinst, a graduate of Indiana University, with a degree in piano performance, is active in the area as a pianist and composer. Audiences of all ages have been delighted by her versatile keyboard skills and jovial personality. Her compositions range from choir novelties to serious instrumental works. “American, United” spans the development of this country from KIDDIE PARADE AND GAMES SET FOR PLACE PARK The annual July Kiddie Parade is scheduled for Wednesday evening, July 1. Sign-up will be at the Presbyterian Church parking lot beginning at 5:30 p.m. Line-up will begin with the parade starting at 6:00 p.m. The parade route is Georgia Street to Van Buren Street, and ending at Urey Middle School’s parking lot. Categories include: Me and My Pet, My Favorite Character, Float, and Open Class. Monetary awards will be presented at the end of the parade for first, second and third place winners in each category. Additionally, a grand prize will be awarded from one of the categories. After the parade, and after awards have been given, games for all ages will be held on the lawn near Urey Middle School. All are welcome to participate or just come and watch. You do not need to be in the parade in order to play the games. Come with a friend. We need your talents I JOHN GLENN NAMES NEW FOOTBALL COACH John Glenn High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Drotar as varsity head football coach. Dan brings to Glenn 12 years of football head coaching experience. He directed Caston High School from 1980-85 compiling a 23-36 record before moving to Eastside High School where he served from 1986-91. At Eastside his record was 38-16 which included four consecutive Northeast Corner Conference championships (88-91). Dan is married and has three small children. MEMORIAL MONUMENT FUND The American Legion Post 365 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1954 of North Liberty will hold a drawing July 4th to raise money for the monument. Tickets are $20.00 each. It will start at 2:00 p.m. with line-up at 1:00 p.m. Applications are available at Ist Source Bank and Liberty Drugs and Emporium. Wienerschnitzel Band To Appear At Potato Creek The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Cultural Arts Program will host a performance of Wienerschnitzel Band on Saturday, June 20, at Potato Creek State Park. The performance, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at the Peppermint HUI at 7:30 p.m. The best German band in Northern Indiana, the Wienerschnitzel Band, has been entertaining people for a number of years. The group used tuba, French horn, clarinet and trumpets to produce their genuine German “oompah music,” and sing in both english and German. For a taste of something different, you won’t want to miss these talented musicians in their traditional costumes. You are invited to bring the famUy to this entertaining presentation. Although the performance if free, the standard $2.00 per car (.50 per person for buses) will be charged at the gate. Lawn chairs or blankets suggester to ensure comfortable seating. JGHS Football Organizational Meeting Tuesday There will be a meeting Tuesday, June 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the John Glenn High School auditorium for all boys interested in playing football. The meeting is for boys who will be in grades 9 through 12 this fall. This is an opportunity for players to meet coach Dan Drotar and receive information regarding football practice this fall. This meeting is for anyone interested in playing football at John Glenn High School whether or not they have played previously. CHALK ART AT NORTH LIBERTY LIBRARY Come to the North Liberty Library on Friday, June 19 at 2:00 p.m. and decorate our sidewalks with your own artistic skills! Wear old clothes and join the fun. WALKERTON TO HAVE GALA 4TH CELEBRATION It’s coming! July 4th — It’s a great day for a picnic, a parade, a bailgame, or just a time to relax in the park. No matter what you plan to do for the day, the Walkerton community will have something for everyone. Carnival It all begins on Tuesday, June 30 when the Wabash Valley Shows will open the carnival at 6:00 p.m. in Place Park. On July 1 through July 4, the carnival will be open from 1:00 • 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. nightly. Kiddle Parade A Games On Wednesday, July 1, Walkerton’s Epsilon Chi Tri Kappa will assist the Friends of the Fourth with the annual Kiddie Parade. Line up will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church parking lot. Parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. with parade route being Georgia Street to Van Buren Street and ending at Urey Middle School’s parking lot. Awards will be presented at the end of the parade. After the Kiddie Parade, games for the kids will be held at the park. Everyone will be a winner. Bring your children for some old fashion fun. The Wabash Valley Shows carnival will be having special reduced prices on Wednesday for Kiddie’s Day from 6:00 -10:00 p.m. Flea Market/Foed Baotha If your interests are looking for bargains or eating deliciously prepared foods, then Place Park will be the place to be! Wednesday. July 1 through Saturday, July 4, you’ll be able to browse through the flea market or stop for a bite to eat at a number of food booths. Stop by throughout the week and find that special item you’ve been searching for. Joly 4th Activities Church service, ball games, fireworks, etc. On this day, display the flag proudly and come to Place Park for the 9:00 a.m. Community Church Service directed by Rev. William Cullen of the United Presbyterian Church. At 11:00 a.m. settle back and watch the Little League Minor All Star Game followed at 1:00 p.m. by the Major League All Star Game. Finish the afternoon with the T-Ball game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Food booths and the Tri Kappa concession stand will be open throughout the day. Other Activities A Fireworks Some other activities planned at Place Park will be a flag retreat, hypnotist, square dancers and numerous drawings, to name a few. The grand finale will be a great fireworks display beginning at dusk with the Walkerton Volunteer Firemen in charge. Bring your family to Walkerton and make this 4th of July one of the best! The doughnut was brought over to America from the Netherlands more than 300 years ago by Dutch colonists.
