ALWAYS A CHALLENGE This Sunday John Glenn High School will hold the Commencement ceremony for the graduating Class of 1992. This scene will be duplicated around this time of year all over our country. Small schools, big schools, urban or rural, it makes no difference. The Class of 1992 is bringing to an end their school days as everyone knows them. All of these graduates, regardless of where or who, will now move on to their future in many different ways. As much as they have shared together these past years, and regardless of the path they follow, they will each be going their own individual way. Many will walk the same paths for a few more years, more schooling at a higher level. Many more will just enter the adult world that awaits them, regardless of the many paths they may follow. The directions are endless, but all will reflect a change in the lives of these many 17, 18 and 19 year olds as they pass from the hallowed halls of the high schools into the waiting world. For many it will be more of a challenge at this time. It is no secret the economy and workforce is not bustling and bubbling over just waiting for these young people. The days of depending more on others will be over and added responsibilities will face this Class of 1992 as individuals. Regardless of the future one pursues, there will be a challenge for these young people. Their training the past 12 or 13 years will be invaluable in many cases. Good habits and work ethics while in school mean so much in future life when one’s past becomes a key to their future. We congratulate not only the graduates of John Glenn High School, but all the high school graduates of 1992 and hope the future can offer you a lot and that you in turn can offer the future something also. It is a two way street. Your success and future depends mainly on the attitude and determination you are willing to give to make the path you follow much smoother. Passing through the doors of your high school for the last time can be sad as well as happy. Much has been done for you these past years whether one realizes it or not. Now it is time to help yourself decide your future. You can do it and regardless of how alone you may feel on some occasions, you still have those behind you that have helped you come this far. Remember them as you go on your individual way. YOUR COOPERATION PLEASE Just one more request to you, our readers. VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “Questions About Stericyde’’ In recent weeks there have been several commentaries from people in the community, concerning Stericycle and their attempt to locate a facility in North Liberty. I would like to add my comments based on the research 1 have conducted about Stericyde’s process and recycling. I would also like to share some of the 26 questions I delivered to Byron Hewett at our meeting on Thursday, May 14. I asked Mr. Hewett if Stericycle’s process can be termed ‘macrowaving’ since there is no such terminology. I also asked if Stericyde microwaved the waste. They do not. They used the old technology of induction heating with modifications they have patented. I have also requested the patent numbers. In Stericyde’s permit application for Michigan City they applied to handle sharps, infectious waste, infedious biological cultures, pathological waste, blood and body fluids in any form, carcass laboratory animals and bedding, other infectious intermingled with pathological waste, human tissue, blood in fluid form, any waste solid, liquid, or semi liquid. These wastes will not go through their treatment process. In Washington they collect this type of waste as a service to their customers. When they get what they consider a large enough load, they take it to an incinerator. I think to consider hospital waste as mere syringes, gowns, gloves, and drapes is unrealistic, and if we consider allowing Stericyde into our community, then we must look at the reality of what this means for our community. Steridcle’s permit application states they are a solid waste processing facility, not a recycling facility. According to the Independent Fee Appraiser's expert when you have waste, you have property devaluation, period. Stericyde is now involved in a lawsuit in Delavan, Wisconsin. The people of Delavan voted over one thousand to five hundred not to let Stericyde build within the limits

of the dty. Though they have stated to us, and to the people of Delavan, they will not build where they are not wanted, they are still pursuing the sight over the community’s objections. If the supporters of Stericyde would consider doing the amount of research and networking that those opposed to Stericyde have done, I would feel more comfortable. If the supporters can base their opinions on evidence other than that evidence supplied by Stericyde, I would feel more comfortable. If Stericyde would supply the information and documentation I requested, without the stipulation that I cannot share with the community what I have heard and seen, I would feel more comfortable. Until that time, I am opposed to allowing a facility being built that will, what I feel, adversely affect this community for ourselves and our children. Jami Vanden Bossche
