NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladvi Sheneman Our sympathy this week goes to the family of Woodrow Cochran in the loss of his wife, Ellen, and also to Evelyn Stephenson’s family. Evelyn will always be remembered for her piano playing, as she played for several years for the residents of Miller’s Merry Manor on Tuesday afternoons. Helen Loucks celebrated her birthday along with her greatgranddaughter, Kelsey Kozinski, at the home of Bob and Judy Loucks on Saturday evening along with other relatives and friends. On Saturday afternoon, Donna Newcomb, Gladys Shaffer, Ethel Rauen and Gladys Sheneman attended the musical production of the play entitled "Meet Me In St. Louis" at the Morris Civic Auditorium. The scenes and musical numbers took place from the summer of 1903 to the spring of 1904, in and around the Smith family. The theater was packed. Do you remember back when people in the country raised a few hens for their own eggs and kept a couple roosters, and then in the early spring would set some old setting hens on a few eggs and raise their own little chickens. know even buy baby chickens and raise them today. That was something to see when those eggs hatched and those baby chicks popped out of the shells. Mary Ream snyder, formerly from our area and who now lives near South Bend was involved in an automobile accident last week not far from her home. She is fortunate to be alive as it totaled her car. According to the diary of Mrs. Johnson, 100 years ago, they really had rain the first week of May. It rained all day and all night on the 2nd and the Yellow Bank was higher than it had been for many a year and the meadow is all under water. This is what we need now, rain all night and rain all day as it is certainly dry. I was told to put a trap jug in my apple tree that bears five kinds of apples to which would help control the small black and yellow spotted beetles that feed on everything. The trap is simple: put one cup of vinegar, and one cup of sugar in a gallon milk jug and fill the jug with water, shake well and add a banana peel and hang in the tree. Many wrote to say it worked, so I am going to try it. Some of these old remedies work better than a lot of the spray we buy. Remember Francis Slattery, as she is critically ill now in the Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home. Dave and Debbie Rose, Kathie and Emily, of Dorr, Michigan, spent Sunday with Roger and Marge Kronk. Calvin and Clara Mae Kronk called in the afternoon. Knowlton, who will be leaving for Army duty in South Carolina. Ellen Cochran, wife of Woodrow Cochran, was buried in the old Barber Cemetery today. Many of my readers have asked me, where it is located. As you drive down Road 6, turn south on Tamarack and go to the first crossroad, 2-A, and turn left at the old Barber School and it is on the right side of the road about % mile. The old Barber Church stood for years across the road where many neighbors and friends attended church in their horse and buggys years ago. Gail and Mae McDaniel returned home Sunday evening after spending several days with Don and Shirley McDaniel and family, of Rolling Meadows, Illinois. Sunday they drove to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and attended Rev. Brian Henry’s church and heard a wonderful sermon and then they all went out and enjoyed dinner together. About fifty volunteers of Miller’s Merry Manor attended the Volunteer dinner at the North Liberty Community Center on Tuesday evening, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. A delicious dinner, catered by Bob’s Country Store was served. Mary Jo presented Judy Zahm with a beautiful bouquet of red roses for all her work and caring and sharing at the nursing home. A lot of the residents of Miller’s Merry manor came out to the dining room Thursday afternoon for the “Hat Show," put on by Gladys Sheneman and Joan Koenig. A good many other friends attended also. You know years ago, everybody wore a hat and gloves when they went out. Many Budd's Bargain Barn 617 Roosevelt Road Walkerton Hours: Monday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. - s:ooipm. wore a hat to cover up their hair, if it was messed up. They have been trying to bring hats back in style, but it is not working. A hat does call attention to the face under it. Someone said my face just seems to get lost when I put on a hat. Several of the residents modeled hats and tried on hats until they found one they thought they looked good in, as they looked at themselves in a large mirror. After they had chosen a hat, the judges, Iva Pommert, Dorothy Miller and Mary Morey then picked the best looking ones. They were Jack Long, Charlie Groshans, George Stombaugh, Lou Bennett, Virginia Timm, Janet Stombaugh, Shirley Shaw, Faye Jones and Ruth Carrico. All received prizes. Jane Pittman made several beautiful lap robes for some of them and hats and a tie for Janet and Roy Fennimore. Helen Gundlach and Madelyn Nelson also entertained with music.

Here is a poem by my grandson, Brandon Stull, who is a sixth grader. My Tree Some day I’m going to plant a tree, And watch it grow as big as me. Its limbs shall reach up to the sky And they will blow, as the wind blows by The birds shall, in my tree, build nests, And some day say my tree’s the best, And the birds will be so proud of me Because I planted them a tree.
