NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Sheneman Easter dinner guests of Bob and Donna Balsley were their son, Vaughn and friend, Alyssa Elkins, Aunt Kate Hevel, Scott and Tanya Johnson and son, Nathen, of Galesburg, Michigan. They all helped Donna celebrate her birthday Saturday evening. A large crowd attended the birthday party for the residents of Miller’s Merry Manor, who celebrated birthdays during the month of April. They were Mary Bennett, Ellen Lehman, Gertrude Stanton, Maude Sanifer, Mary Jane Gordon, Dorothy Lagenbahn and Fav Jones. Entertainment was by Rev. Mike Dittmer and family, Daniel Fox and Gladys Sheneman. Refreshments were served by Verice Walz and Mary Jo Golubski, activity director. Mr. and Mrs. Gail McDaniel returned home Monday after spending the past three weeks sightseeing in several southern states. They spent time with Fauntelle Spellman, at Anderson, So. Carolina. They stopped in Glouster, Ohio, and visited Mr. and Mrs. Glen McDaniel and then called on their son, Curtis and family, in Richmond, Indiana. A large crowd attended the talent program at the Church of Christ on Sunday evening. Tim Stewart andd Kent Bergland were in charge of the program. Ethel Rauen spent the weekend with June Phegley, in LaCrosse. She called on her brother, Wesley and his wife, Rosalie Mack on the way home on Monday, at Wanatah. Many of you will remember Roy and Vera Ward who live on New Road on spent the winter in Florida. They returned home and then last Wednesday Roy had heart surgery but is getting along fine and expects to get back home Tuesday. So this is good news. Your friends all wish you a speedy recovery, Roy. Sure hope it warms up Tuesday so I can get out and work in my yard and get some garden made. How about you? Good Friday. Would you believe, I woke up this morning and the sun was shining in my eyes, but it sure did frost around here. Did you recognize Joan Free-man-Roth’s picture in the Sunday business section? Congratulations Joan, who is now regional manager for Lady Remington Fashion Jewelry. We wish you well. Mr. and Mrs. Scott Johnson and nine month old son, Nathen, of Galesburg, Michigan, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Balsley. The Johnsons and Grandma Donna enjoyed breakfast on Saturday morning at the Hilltop Restaurant, in Lakeville. Mr. and Mrs. Scott Lucas spent the weekend with Jill’s parents, Charles and Joyce Richmond. Norma Patrick returned home Thursday after undergoing surgery on Monday at Memorial Hospital. She has received a lot of beautiful floral arrangements, cards, and many relatives and friends have called. Helen Pogodzinski, a good friend, is very ill in St. Joseph’s Medical Center in South Bend. Please remember her in your prayers and send her a get well card. Many of you North Liberty readers will remember Richard (Dutch) Pommert, brother of Stanley, who has been a resident in a nursing home in Mishawaka the past 14 years. He passed away on Saturday and was buried at the Sumption Prairie Cemetery on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Roush and Florence Garwood returned home Friday after spending the winter in Florida. 4-H ROUND-UP SCHOLARSHIP FOR JACINDA PAIRITZ The Better Homes Extension Homemakers Club made plans to award Jacinda Pairitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Pairitz, a trip to 4-H Round-Up in June at their meeting Monday night at the home of Veryl Wathen. She will make a 'report of her experience to the club members. Nancy Stickley presided in the absence of the president, Alda Ray. Jerri Ruby and Nancy displayed the banner they had made depicting St. Jospeh County Extension Homemakers and the 4-H motto, head, heart, home and health. It will be placed in competition at the

Spring Fling dinner Wednesday night at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds. Attending will be Mrs. Stickley, Jennie Marshall, Naomi Personette, Marty Malstaff, Mary Hahn, Ruth Ullery and Alice Walker. There is room for one more to take the place of Cheryl Flaugher. The Women will depart from the Walkerton Community Building at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 dinner. A final reading was made to amend the club constitution and Mary Hahn resigned as secretary. Mary Hahn gave the citizenship report urging members to vote May 5 and also to protect your home when away on a trip. Veryl Wathen reported on " America The Beautiful” for cultural arts stating the poem was written by Catherine Lee Bates from a magnificant view from the top of Pike’s Peak. Ruth Ullery read a poem, "On Old Fashioned Family” for the family life report. Jennie Marshall won the door prize. Delicious refreshments of angel food cake topped with strawberry glaze was served by the hostess. Dues are to be paid at the next meeting which will be Tuesday, May 26 because of Memorial Day, at the home of Vi Masterman.

Also to those who worked the day of the Fun Fair. You did a great job and we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to the room mothers who made calls for baked goods donations. We had a wonderful turnout and a big thanks goes to all the parents who donated baked goods for the cake walk. It was a success in itself! Three beautifully decorated cakes were raffled during the day. The winners were: Rhonda Nanz, Barb Bowen and Debbie Walker. Congratulations and we’re sure you enjoyed them I A special thanks goes to Pam Tetzlaff for organizing food donations. You did a great job and we really appreciate it! Thanks also goes to the local businesses who donated food and other items. For example, stir them into cookies in place of raisins. A. How can I keep brown sugar from getting hard? If it does get hard, how can I soften it? Mrs. L.S., Estancia, NM. A. Start by storing brown sugar either in the original bag, tightly sealed, or in a tightly sealed container. If sugar gets hard, place half an apple or the heel from a fresh loaf of bread in an airtight container with the brown sugar. Place container in refrigerator.
