Meet The Candidates (continued from Page 5) run the corporation for the next four years. I've heard many people say they don’t want a new middle school at this time; andd that's okay with me. But. we do have to go on with the job of education, and we must aggressively work to solve our middle school problems. I’m prepared to do just that; look for ways to upgrade our educational processes while being responsible to our taxpayers. If that means compromises, then let's talk about them. 1 believe that we must keep this election away from a "one issue election" and look at what each candidate has to offer. I will do my best to be open minded, to use critical thinking skills, and fairly represent all patrons and children alike. No candidate can offer more experience and insight on current school issues. I don't have "magic” solutions to our problems. I can only promise to be a concerned, interested board member who trys to keep children’s interest at heart. POLK TWP. CURT PLETCHER (Polk Township) As a candidate for the John Glenn School Board, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the patrons of our school district. lam Curt Pletcher, a resident of Polk Township for 19 years. 1 am married to Jean (Hildebrand) Pletcher and have four children, Jake, Katie, Jared and Kyle. I am a John Glenn High School graduate and also a graduate of Indiana University with a degree in accounting. lam a Certified Public Accountant. I have 14 years of budgeting and management experience which includes work in public accounting and private industry. My work experience includes two years with a C.P.A. firm that specializes in municipal finance for cities, towns and schools throughout Indiana. I am currently employed with Walker Manufacturing in cost/budgeting area as a

Senior Financial Analyst. John Glenn School Corporation is a multi-million dollar corporation which necessitates the need for qualified board members to ensure strong fiscal management. With the current economic conditions and increased budget constraints, financial decisions take on even greater significance and importance. It is essential to have informed and cost effective decisions especially during difficult times. With sound financial decisions and long term planning, we will be able to maintain and also enhance our excellent school system. With our rapidly changing society it is imperative that we have the flexibility to make changes in curriculum and instructional programs to keep pace with the needs of our students. If elected my first priority will be that our children are offered the best education and curriculum possible. 1 believe there are several inadequacies currently within our corporation facilities. Each school has its own deficiencies and needs that must be addressed. lam not opposed to a building project that would serve as a long term solution and would solve several facilities needs. As a board member, I wouldd like to see increased board involvement in the annual budget process and preparation. With more involvement or a hands-on approach, the board would have an increased awareness of current and future needs. This would be the catalyst for more in-depth long-term planning and the board would be able to prioritize needs of the corporation. I am not a single issue candidate and I am not part of an organized group. I am concerned that the campaign is being dominated by one single issue. 1 beleive every patron should evaluate each candidate's background individually and see if they are qualified. Determine if they are the best candidate in their respective township to direct our school system for the next four years. As a parent and longterm resident, I am vitally interested in the welfare of our communi-
ties and recognize the essential role our school system plays in preparing our children for the future. ROBBIE KECK (Polk Township) 1 am Robbie Keck, school board candidate for Polk Twp. lam married and have four children. My wife’s name is Suzan. My children's names are Andrea, 16; Jennifer, 14; Christopher, 8; and Lynzie, 5. lam a graduate of John Glenn High School and have been employed by United Parcel Service for the past 14 years. My reason for running for school board is not one single issue. Although I am opposed to the current middle school project. Bricks and mortar, and grade organization, are not the things that foster academic achievement. It is quality programs that make the difference in our educational system. We need to direct our efforts towards quality academic programs. We adso need to address the needs of those who choose to enter the mainstream of society and prepare them with vocational instruction. Let’s provide our children with opportunity, not a financial burden. ANNETTE HEFFELFINGER (Polk Township) Hello, my name is Annette (Peterson) Heffelfinger and I am running for the John Glenn School Board. I have lived in Polk Township most of my life. lam a 1979 graduate of John Glenn High School. During my years of attending school, I personally went through a consolidation, busing kids to Tyner for 4th and sth grades and those wonderful tin-foil meals. Remember those? They were meals that reminded you of the ‘Jetsons’. I then attended Bethel College, where I received a degree in Psychology in 1985. I also met my husband, John, there, who is, as well, a graduate of Bethel with a major in Accounting. I feel my work experience could benefit the school system for I have been a Probation Officer for Marshall County, a Drug and Alcohol Counselor for a half-way house and
currently I am working at Miller’s Merry Manor in Walkerton as the Social Service Director. 1 have personally worked with too many individuals who have fell through the cracks within the school systems. Then, they end up either in the prison system, as a druggie/alcoholic or both. Then who pays for those people who end up in the system? The school system has a lot more 1 responsibilities these days besides just teaching. The administrators, teachers and staff have many roles i to play as a counselor, teacher and in some cases, parent. 1 am truly concerned about the students in our community. 1 do feel like I have knowledge which could be very beneficial to the school board, but the most insight of all is that I am a mother. DAVID HOSTETLER (Polk Township) As a candidate for a seat on the John Glenn School Board I, David Hostetler, would like to provide the following information for the voters in our school system. 1 have been married for 17 years to my wife, Betty, and we have one child, a daughter who is 14 years old and attending Bth grade at Urey Middle School. 1 am a graduate of the John Glenn High School, class of 1973, and have continued my education by taking classes at Notre Dame in the areas of Supervisory Development and Management/ Labor Relations. 1 have also taken classes and I am certified in Environmental Management. 1 have lived in the John Glenn area all my life and have a vested interest in the education of our youth through my daughter and our two foster sons, one in Elementary and the other in High School. 1 believe in and support the educational advancement of all students of the John Glenn School System. I strongly believe our school system’s greatest strength lies within a staff and administration which want to do what is best for the students of our schools. When decisions are needed, the "kids first” thought is always present. Overall, we need to improve our communication and relations with the community as a whole. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past and progress on. My goal for the next four years would be to improve our school system so every students has the same opportunity to achieve their potential. I want our school system to continue to be the excellent school corporation it has been and to communicate and promote our system to the patrons of the John Glenn School Corporation so they can understand and support the great efforts that are going on
