Fifth and sixth grade students, teachers, parents, and grandparents travelled to our country’s capital. The trip was an outstanding opportunity to involve the students in our nation’s history and history in the making. The group had the unique privilege to meet with Congressman Tim Roemer at the capitol building. Roemer spent two hours with the group answering questions and explaining his job. The group was invited to tour the floor of the House. The word strikes fear into the hearts of many adults. If you didn’t learn math in school, how can you learn it as an adult? Pie new Math Basics pre-GED adult education series beginning soon on all eight Hoosier public television stations is designed to take the fear out of learning math. The 11 half-hour programs teach practical problem solving, reasoning and reflection. Adults will learn how to think mathematically and how to set up and solve problems in their daily lives at home and at work. Adult students will take a pretest at home and then watch the programs on televiion. After watching the programs, students will complete the thinking exercises in the Math Basics workbook. At the end of the series, students will be offered a post-test so that they will know what they have learned. Students who want to enroll in the GED ON TV study at home program in the fall will not have to re-test if they do well on the post-test. locked doors, Roemer sat the group in the representatives’ chairs and demonstrated voting procedures. Visiting the Smithsonian Institution was fascinating for all. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was an awe-inspiring experience. The group even walked on the roof of the building and saw the theatre-goers in action. An illuminated tour of the national monuments brought an unmatched feeling of patriotism and pride. The Hard Rock Case was a fun side-trip to the twentieth century. In 1990 and 1991 thousands of Hoosier adults enjoyed studying for a GED high school equivalency certificate from the comfortable environment of home. Many adults need basic math skills before they can begin GED study. Math Basics offers adults the opportunity to learn basic math skills from home. The traveler tree, which grows in Madagascar, stores up to one pint of water inside the base of each of its long leaf stalks.

Ford’s Theatre, the Peterson House and Mount Vernon were educational insights into the lives of past presidents. The trip was enjoyed by young and not-so-old alike. Many thanks to the chaperones who participated and the teachers who attended. The return trip was a mark of the trip’s success as the majority of the tripsters were zonked out!
