W.E.S. SETS KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION On Thursday, March 26, the Walkerton Elementry School will be holding registration for students eligible to attend Kindergarten in the 1992-93 school year. The office will be open for registration from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To enter kindergarten a child must be five (5) years of age on or before June 1. A birth certificate (one issued by the health department in the county where the child was born) and a record of immunizations shall also be presented before the first day of attendance. Incoming students will be evaluated on April 13 and 14. Arrangements for the testing will be made during registration. Drama Club To Present “You Can’t Take It With You’’ Bring on the laughs! That’s the cry as the John Glenn High School Drama Gub presents Kaufman and Hart’s "You Can’t Take It With You’’ on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn auditorium. Tickets are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and are available at the door. This comedy classic deals with the eccentric but lovable Sycamore family and the situations that arise when their daughter falls for the son of a straitlace Wall Street business tycoon. The laughs are nunftrous as Mr. Sycamore makes fireworks in the basement, Mrs. Sycamore writes plays because a typewriter was delivered accidently, Grandpa goes to graduations for fun and hunts snakes — and that’s just the beginning! The servants, xylophone-playing son-in-law, Russian ballet teacher, and Grand Dutchess Olga Katrina haven't even been mentioned yet! The cast of 20 has been hard at work since January to bring this production to life and promises you'll be entertained. Come and join the John Glenn Drama Gub on April 3 and 4. The teams will consist of four person teams (2 males and 2 females). Second place winners are Corey Ross, Rusty Young, Scott RimOn March 14, Urey chess teams competed in the Michigan City Regional Chess tournament. Fort-ty-two teams in four age categories participated in five rounds of chess play, with the top five teams qualifying for the state tournament to be held in Terre Haute on April 11. Urey’s three teams competed in the Bth grade and under division. The teams placed second, third and fourth, all qualifying for state play. The team of Corey Ross, Scott Rimbaugh, Nick Medich, BJ. Morgan and Rusty Young placed 2nd overall with four team points and 16 individual points. Al Gark, Steven Savoie, David Guseilla and Rusty Slater placed third also with four team points, but with 15 individual points and the team of Micky Day, T. J. Jackson, Scott Robbins, Jason Hall and Dan Walter placed fourth, again with four team points and with 13‘/i individual points. Undefeated players for Urey were Al Gark, Scott Rimbaugh and T. J. Jackson. The teams are coached by teacher Lisa Cox.

DIABETIC SUPPORT GROUP TO MEET MARCH 31 The Diabetic Support Group of Starke County will meet on Tuesday, March 31, at 1:00 p.m. at the Horne Operated Medical Equipment building, 10 S. Heaton St., Knox. Guest speaker will be Ms. Dixie Lockridge, social worker from Starke Memorial Hospital. She will speak on advanced directives. The annual spring Fresh Lake Perch Fish Fry is coming to Tracy United Methodist Church on Hwy. 6, west of Walkerton, on Saturday, April 11. The dinner will be served from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the church. The menu includes fresh lake perch, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, dessert and beverage. All for only $7.50 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12. Pre-schoolers, free.

REGIONAL CONFERENCE On Monday, May 11, at 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Indiana University Northwest Campus, Gary, the Sixth Chapter I Regional Conference for parents will be held. Parents have been extended an invitation to spend an exciting day at college. They will have an opportunity to participate in over 80 workshops to help them answer concerns about helping their child. Many outstanding speakers have been selected for their expertise and interest in promoting maximum student achievement and improved self-concept. The Chapter I Department will pay the registration fee for the parents of any Chapter I student. (Lunch is included.) Other parents are welcome but will be responsible for the $7.00 registration fee. Transportation will be provided for all parents attending the conference from our school corporation, if they choose. MARSHALL CO. CHRISTIAN WOMEN TO MEET The Marshall County Christian Women will meet on April 3, at 7:00 p.m., at the Balloon Wurks Restaurant, Plymouth Holiday Inn. Cost for the dinner meeting is $7.50 per person. Theme for the meeting is Baseball Fever —Opening Nite. There will be no child care available. Rick and Sheila Knock have given up their jobs to travel all over the United States and Canada along with their five children, who range in age from 15 and 4 months, sharing the Love of God with others through their music. JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The John Glenn School Board met in special session on March 3. 1992 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School auditorium. All members were present (Mary Kay Millar arrived at 8:05 p.m.). The School Board, superintendent and approximately 200 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. School board president Jean Ann Beem instructed the Board and the visitors that the purpose of the meeting was to provide a hearing as required by law on the necessity for the execution of such lease and whether the lease rental provided in here is a fair and reasonable rental for the proposed construction in leasing of a new middle school building back to the John Glenn School Corporation. The president further stated that the proposed lease, drawings, plans and specifications, and estimates as set forth in Exhibit A and attached hereto for the new middle school building have been on file from the date of publication of said notices until today in the office of the superintendent of schools of John Glenn School Corporation, LaPorte, Marshall and St. Joseph Counties, Indiana. Mr. David Hostetler, school board member, reviewed the middle school project starting with Board activity beginning in January of 1985 and continuing until the present. He highlighted action taken by the School Board regarding the building of a new middle school during the past seven year period. An outline of his presentation is attached with the minutes. Mr. Dick Reese, principal of Urey Middle School, spoke of the educational needs for a new middle school. He highlighted many of the deficiencies of the current building and how these deficiencies impact on the educational program Urey provides students in grades seven and eight. A listing of the deficiencies is attachedd as part of the minutes. Mrs. Marilyn Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary School, addressed the crowded conditions in the elementary school and told how space at present is being used to house the sixth grade that could be used to provide for programs for students in grades K-5 when the sixth graders would be moved to the new middle school. Lee Brockway of Fanning'Howey Associates reviewed designs of the proposed new building to be located on the land next to the current high school. A copy of the approved schematic drawings are attached to the minutes. Gene Staszewski. construction manager with Irmscher A Sons, reviewed construction cost of the new building. He discussed the cost savings involved with the two story scheme and said that plans for the new building would be completed in the fall of 1992 andd bids were eipectedd in January of 1993. It is anticipated that the new school would be available for students in the fail of 1994. (continued on Page 16)
