GFWC Art Scholarship Contest Results The GFWC/Indiana Federated Gubs 13th District Art Scholarship Contest was held March 14, at the Walkerton Community Building. Seven graduating seniors from counties in the 13th District participated in the contest. Winners were: first place, Jennifer A. Herbert, of Riley High School, South Bend, sponsored by the Centre Twp. Women’s Gub, St. Joseph County. Second place, Leslie C. Collier, of Whitko High School, Pierceton, Indiana, sponsored by ESO Literature Gub of Kosciusko County. Third place, Elizabeth A. Kuntz, of Washington High School, South Bend, sponsored by the Progress Gub, St. Joseph County. Honorable mention, Nicole R. Whitesell, of Warsaw Community High School, sponsored by the Ladies of the Round Table, Kosciusko County. Judges for the contest were Mr.

Arthur Davis, of Wabash College and Nora Wilson, artist and art instructor, of Koontz Lake, Walkerton. The contest was directed by Alice L. Walker, 13th District Art Dept. Chairman, assisted by Mildred Casey, a member of the GFWC Woman’s Community Gub of Walkerton. After awarding of the prizes, the students and judges were introduced. An informal question and answer session followed. The contest was also attended by parents of the students, student sponsors, Mrs. Doris Gardner, President-Elect 13th District, of Warsaw; Mrs. Maxine Mann, District treasurer, of South Bend; and Mrs. Carol Hunt, Art Chairman, Kosciusko County, of Mentone. A buffet of refreshments was served while all were awaiting the decision of the judges. R.E.A.L. Ervin Stuntz talked on Tuesday and told how Indiana limestone found its way to the National Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial and many other places in the world. Bob Schaeffer chaired on Wednesday and gave an interesting talk on various bills that our government has proposed and about the rights of the people. Bob is also a jokester and has been making up jokes about the people who attend the meals. On Thursday Virgil Gwin chaired and talked about voting. We were happy to have ten year old Aaron Meyer, who played the piano for us. Aaron has entertained us before and we always enjoy listening to him. Mr. and Mrs. Renis Carter and Mr. and Mrs. Carson, parents of Dr. Bill andd Betty Carter, were our guests and we hope they will come often. Our sing-a-long on Friday is always a lot of fun. Verice Walz, our pianist, is away on vacation so Katy Capes played for us and Jessie Schaeffer led us in the singing. Eight people from the nursing home attended. We’re always glad to see them. echoed from every lane as the contestants got into their game. The ladies saw some very close scoring in their section. High scratch game of 177 was posted by Merle Bruesch, just topping Betty Ogle’s 176 game. Vollie Verkinder followed with a nice 166 game. High handicap game was Ogle's 236, besting Bruesch’s 232 and Verkinder's 229 elfforts. Ogle had the high series total of 482, with Bruesch posting a 438 and Verkindder a 403 total. A most competitive day for the ladies. The gents were equally competitive with nice scores for several of the group. Harold Schweder's 217 high scratch game topped Jack Grimmett's 202 and Frank Hecimovich's 186 games. Schweder’s 250 high handicap game outdistanced Willis McQueary’s and Gaude Nowakowski’s 237, and Grimmett’s 236 handicap games.

~ Schweder’s 579 high series total capped his day as he was back in good form this week. Bud Weinman posted a 486 total and Grimmett was just back with 483. A most interesting and enjoyable day for the gents. On the 18th of this month, the Seniors will decide the date of their season closing. Be sure you are there to express your selection. MUSIC EVANGELIST TO PERFORM MARCH 29 Dave Musselman, music evangelist, will be appearing in concert at the Lakeville Christian Church on Sunday morning, March 29, at both the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services. Dave is the son of a preacher, and a heritage of Christian music. His accomplished ability at the piano and synthesized keyboards has provided him with a platform from which to share the Gospel. The public is invited.
