March 14 and 15 is Sugar Camp Days at this county park in New Carlisle, and visitors can celebrate the coming of spring with a host of activities offered by St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Department. Every hour, tours of the sugar bush will be led by park interpreters. These 45 minute to one hour walks will cover the history of maple syrup production, tapping methods, and conclude with a trip into the sugar house where syrup is cooked. The park's Nature Center has many exhibits for visitors to enjoy. Its bookstore/giftshop will be supplies with maple baked goods to purchase. There will also be several displays on producing and using maple syrup. Another popular attraction at the festival is the al I-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. Unlike most, this breakfast features pure maple syrup on its menu! Hours for Sugar Camp Days are Saturday, March 14, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Sunday, March 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bendix Woods is located on Timothy Road, south of State Road 2 near the LaPorte County Line. For more information phone 219/6543155. COLD OR FLU? How can you tell whether you have flu or just a bad cold? Fever! If you run a high fever, over 101 degrees, it is flu, reports Health Network. Do not take flu lightly! It is potentially life-threatening, especially for the elderly. Flu is caused by a virus, not a bacterium, and antibiotics will not help. But a prescription drug called amantadine may help. The drug should not be taken without consultation with a physician, especially persons with diabetes, heart or lung disease, and persons over 65. Flu can progress to pneumonia and that is life-threatening. With bed rest and plenty of liquids, the worst of flu should be over in two or three days, but if symptoms worsen you could be in serious danger and you should get medical attention without further delay. At no time should you take flu lightly or go to school or work if you have it. TEEN MOTHERS AT HIGHEST NUMBER IN 15 YEARS! The number of unmarried teenage mothers has reached the highest level in 15 years, reports Health News Network. One in four babies born in 1989 had an unmarried mother, up 8% from 1988. More than half of white teen mothers and 9 out of 10 black teen mothers were unmarried. Seven percent of the babies had low birth weights, a sign of poor health. Dr. Louis Sullivan, secretary of Health and Human Services, said "this portends a future generation of fragile families." Other public health officials say the Agues obviate the fact that more teenagers are having sex and are increasing the probability of AIDS. ♦ ♦ ♦ The easiest person to deceive is oneself. —Edward Bulwer-Lytton
