It was agreed Mary Hahn would start the picnic basket March 1. This has been a successful moneymaker the past four years. One member makes something, a craft or special food, and passes it to a designated person who places money in the basket what she thinks the goodies are worth, plus contributing her craft or food item to the next person on the list, who does the same until all members have participated. Nancy Stickley will send in reservations before March 27 for International Day at the Spaghetti Works in South Bend March 31. Cars will leave at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. registration and grand dinner with dessert at 7:00 p.m. The cost is SB.OO. Call 586-2251 for reservations. J.G. Academic Decathlon Team Finishes Seventh On Friday evening, February 14, and Saturday, February 15, the John Glenn Academic Decathlon team represented John Glenn at the state Academic Decathlon competition at the University of Indianapolis campus in Indianapolis. Like the regional competition three weeks ago, the state competition consisted of prepared and impromptu speeches, interview, literature, economics, fine arts, math, science, geography, essay, and a superquiz based on ecology and environment. The team earned ten medals in all. In the varsity division, James Karst won a bronze in economics. In the scholastic division, Jason Hickman won a bronze in science, a silver in geography, anddd a gold in essay. Mike Finney won a bronze in math and a gold in essay. Mike Finney also won the bronze for overall high score in the scholastic division. In the honors division, Tim Pletcher won a bronze in science. Jeremy Smith won a bronze in fine arts and a gold in literature. Mike Finney led the team in total points. represent the top three scores out of up to 39 students competing in each of the divisions from the 13 small school represented at the state level. Small schools are defined as those with fewer than 1080 students. The other team members include Amy Brinkhoff, Adam Jacob, Dustie Rhodes, Jessica Verhaeghe, and coach Eric Pressel. The John Glenn team finished seventh out of 13 small schools represented at the state competition. This is the first year that the John Glenn Academic Decathlon team has made it to the state level. The team appreciates the contributions that came from organizations and individuals in the community to help defray the expenses of going to the state competition. SENIOR CITIZENS BOWLING NEWS The Senior Bowlers enjoyed a good day this past week, with both the ladies and gents rolling good games. The competition was dose in all categories. The high scratch game of the ladies was rolled by Anne Falk, who posted a 158 game. Betty Ogle was close with 153 and Marge Busweil followed with a 147 game. 225, just three pins below Buswell’s 222 challenged! Ogle's 214 placed 3rd. Ogle's 437 high series total was well above Busweil’s 409 and June Lind’s 362 series. From the scoring, the ladies are really taking their game seriously! The gents also had some serious competition. The high scratch game was Frank Hecimovish's 214, just topping Bud Weinman’s 210 game. John Gark placed third with a 180 game. High handicap game was Weinman’s 244, nudging out Hecimovish’s 240 game. Qark followed with a 228 game. High series total was Weinman's 544, followed by Hecimovish's 537 total. Ray De Vault was third with a 479 series. Good competition and fun for the gents. There are still more man etgm weeks left in the bowling season of the Seniors. Winter still is making it miserable to be outside, come join the Seniors for an afternoon of exercise and fun.
