NORTH LIBERTY NEWS By Gladys Shenetnan Well, would you believe this is the last week of February already? Received a card from Evelyn Lappin in Fort Lauderdale, Florida stating the weather is beautiful there now, but Perle is ready to come back home, as he misses the gang for their coffee at 4:00 p.m. at Fair Oil Co. Received word also from my son, Dennis, in Palm Desert, Calif, telling me how he got such a laugh out of my article on Bag Balm. He told me he had used it for years on his feet and out there they call it “udder butter,” so I got a laugh out of that too. Now I’m hearing from a lot of people that use it. Small world, isn’t it, and I learn something new every week from my news 1 write, it seems. The Over the Hill Gang met last Thursday at the Church of Christ and enjoyed a delicious dinner together. Aletha Croy was in charge of the program, so we all drove out to Potato Creek State Park where we enjoyed a movie by the naturalist on all the state parks in Indiana and the animals, birds and flowers in our park. Mary Jo Golubski, activity director at Miller's Merry Manor, brought eight residents over and they enjoyed the movie and then a drive through the park and got to see a lot of deer. It was a fun day. Please don’t forget, the community is invited to a Veterans Memorial meeting on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Building. They would like to place a plaque in Eastlawn with all the veterans names on it from this area. Received word from Ruth Price, of South Bend, who works for the genealogy society and is in the

process ot microfilming some of the old North Liberty News. Someone had brought in a copy of the Walkerton Independent dated December 14, 1922. His name was J. Willis Cotton. He also had a copy of The Walkerton Visitor dated March 16, 1886. This issue was the first after the death of Henry S. Mintle, who edited the paper called The Visitor. Do any of you ever recall getting The Visitor? Does anyone have a copy? Please get in touch with me, as Ruth would like to know. Also, M.S. Wolfe had a copy of The Visitor dated July 11, 1877 and he also displayed a copy of The Public Leader dated December 9, 1876. The paper was eight pages, five columns wide and published every Saturday by L.S. Boynton and George L. Smith. Rev. Streeter is mentioned. Would any of you Wolfe’s living in the area have any information for the genealogy society? Many of you remember Jackie Singleton as she use to work with me several years ago at Harvey’s Dime Store. She is having heart problems at this time, so please remember her. North Liberty lost another one of its oldest residents again this week. Edna Steele, age 91, died Wednesday at Miller’s Merry Manor. She was born in Tyner as Edna Watkins. So our sympathy goes to her daughter, Donabelle Bals ley and family. Her funeral was held at the Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church served the family dinner since she was a member of the United Methodist Church. The Church of Christ was shocked last Wednesday evening to hear of the death of one of their faithful members. Dale Brown, age 58, who was attending a meeting as he was plant superintendent for Vulcan Materials, toe., in South Bend. His funeral was held at the Church of Christ at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and then he was taken to Herscher, Illinois, for a memorial ser-

vice at the Pilot Cemetery where he was buried. They formerly moved here from Illinois seven years ago and were very active in the Church of Christ, and he is going to be greatly missed. Well, to fill you in on the latest news, I could write a book about Teegarden years ago. I have had telephone calls, two friends bought me a book that Lottie Logan had published in 1988 telling of all the things that happened in Teegarden when she was growing up. I haven’t had time to read it all yet. How many of you remember A.W. Dolph who raised lots of sheep? 1 was told that the Japanese people would come on the train to buy his breeding stock to take back to Japan. It seems they are sure buying up a lot of our businesses today, but how did they come to learn that Mr. Dolph raised she^p way back then, it would be interesting to know. Nancy Price called to inform me that her husband, Eugene (Pete), returned home Wednesday from the Medical Burn Unit, in Fort Wayne. He is improving rapidly from his severe burns and he really appreciated all the cards and letters he received from all his many friends. We are all so happy to hear the good news. Over 300 attended the church service Sunday morning at the Church of Christ. A group of young people from Great Lakes Bible College, Lansing, Michigan, had the service, singing a variety of music. After the service all were invited to go to the social room where all enjoyed a bountiful pot luck dinner in honor of all our new members who have joined our church this past year. We welcome twenty-five new members into our fellowship and we pray that God will richly bless them as we work together in 1992. Gene and Norma Patrick entertained Saturday evening with a party for their grandson, Brandon Stull, who was celebrating his 12th

birthday. Those present were Carol, John, Bryon and Chris Holderbaum, his mother Tammy and sister, Jamie and his greatgrandmother, Gladys Sheneman. Party pizzas and other goodies was enjoyed along with birthday cake baked by decorated by Brandon himself. Oh yes, he even had two friends present, Crystal Holder and Jessie Smith. He received some nice birthday gifts. THANKS We want to thank Dr. Engel, Liberty Township Ambulance Service, St. Joseph’s Medical Center and Communty E.M.S. Ambulance Service for their quick action in aiding and transporting me to the Fort Wayne Burn Center after my accident. And we want to thank everyone for prayers, concerns, their phone calls, cards, letters, flowers, visits and other gifts of thoughtfullness while I was in the hospital and now that I am home. Our children and family have given us their love and support. To all we say “Thank You and God Bless!” Eugene (Pete) and Nancy Price NURSERY SCHOOL REGISTRATION MARCH 10 The North Liberty Church of Christ Nursery School is now taking registrations for the 1992-93 school year. COMMANDER’S CORNER The VA may pay the hospital bill beginning with the first day of hospitalization, provided the authorization is requested from the VA within 72 hours after the Vet is admitted to the hospital. The hospitalization must be of emergency status. If notification is not received by the VA within 72-hours after admission, the VA may only consider defraying the cost from the date the VA received notification of the admission. It is in the best interest of the Vet to secure the authorization from the VA before he or she enters the private hospital. The Vet should , keep a record of the same of VA ; employee from whom approval was requested. Notification to the VA hospital of a weekend emergency admission to a private hospital is best accomplished by telegram. This is especially true over a long holiday weekends due to the 72 hour notification rule. CARBONLESS FORMS To Fill Your Business Needs Independent-News 601 Roosevelt Rd Walkerton
